Pain relief

Had a friend who have birth say she didn't have any pain relief but she did use gas and air. Is that considered pain relief?

I've had two vaginal births. 1st with gas and air and pethidine and 2nd just gas and air.

Yes. Gas and air is pain relief.
Pain is very subjective if you google how it works it’s really interesting.
Pain relief also works very differently on people.

I found G&A just made me vomit during labour, but the stronger dose given when I pulled my shoulder joint out of place was quite useful.

Found Tens great during labour, but very few people I know did.

Does it really matter? Do what you need to do in labour is what I say!

I found biting the gas and air nozzle to be relief from pain in one delivery. They turned the gas off for pushing but let me keep the air thing. Desperate times… also shouting at my husband, demanding vodka and making funny noises helped me to manage the pain.

No obviously doesnt really matter was just curious. That's why I also mentioned that I've given birth twice and used gas and air and pethidine.

Another interesting one for you OP -

On the notes from when I gave birth it states ‘birthing pool’ in the pain relief section!

The workshop I attended that was run by the hospital told us that being in water was the second most effective form of pain relief only behind an epidural.

Sexnotgender · 25/08/2021 17:48

It doesn’t really kill the pain just makes you very spaced out.

I’ve had 2 births with gas and air and I bloody loved the stuff!

Fluffyhairdontcare · 25/08/2021 18:43

I've used gas and air a few times and given birth in a pool. I had good pain management during both labours. I'm not actually pregnant or thinking about pain relief options at the moment, just curious whether it's widely thought that gas and air isn't considered pain relief like my friend said.

I would consider it a pain relief yes.
Although it done nothing for me and make me sick.
Epidural for me all the way!

It doesn't stop the pain but helps your mind to float peacefully away while it's going on. Perhaps your friend is proud of her birth, don't piss on her chips and tell her you think it is pain relief!

Oh no! I'd never do that. I'm not asking in a snippy way just genuinely curious. She said it in a conversation we had the day before I went in for induction and my DD is 20 months so it was ages ago and something I just kept meaning to ask about. I don't care if it is or not but was just curious if most people would include that as pain relief. I would and it sounded like she doesn't, that's all.

Gas and air is suppose to help the pain
So I'd say it's pain relief
I have had a water birth and two normal labours . None I used pain relief but the water birth made me feel worse then my natural births I wanted to get out!
