Jubilee Birth Centre, Hull or Wakefield Birth Centre??

Anyone have any experience of using either of these? We planned for home delivery last time ( though that didn't happen in the end - another story!) but have moved house now and the transfer time to hospital if needed is just too long for comfort. So, wondering about trying for one of these - any feedback welcome.

they wouldn't let me go the the jubilee birth centre, said I had to have dd2 in HRI so I can't help.

There's quite a distance between the two, which one is nearer?

dianemclark · 30/11/2007 07:59

to be honest, we're in Selby so neither is near - one is 40 mins away & the other 50! Gosh that sounds mad to travel, but the hospital is 30 so maybe not.

I'll ask on the Wakefield thread for you diane.

How about Leeds? Isn't there a birth centre at all there or would the journey be too far?

dianemclark · 30/11/2007 17:56

thanks. Leeds is much nearer but there's no birth centre there.

sarah, I know a couple of people who had hoped to use the birthing centre, but for various reasons ended up not doing. iirc they have very strict criteria about who and in what circumstances can go - basically you have to be very low risk. I think there's also a chance that when you actually go into labour, if they haven't availability then they can't take you. All seemed a bit unreliable to me. But hey, I've had 2 emergency c-sections!!

That's a message Diane from one of the MNetters who is from Wakefield/Barnsley!! Have a look at our threadhere and I am sure lots of them will have some info!

which is your nearest hospital and is that totally out of the question? I live only 5 mins away from hospital and I found that journey more than long enough with my second and third babies!

dianemclark · 01/12/2007 17:33

Our nearest maternity unit is York - 25 mins away! So there are no 'near' options. Thanks for the input everyone - I just can't decide what to do! Guess if I leave it long enough it'll be the York hospitla by default...!

I looked at jubilee as I didn't want to be in Hull royal, but they will only take you if you are low risk and I decided that in that case I'd rather have a homebirth as my house is closer to HRI than the jubilee centre is!

Can you try for a Homebirth this time around or is it too high risk?

DITDOT · 03/12/2007 09:39

I had my 2 dd in York and I found the 'service' to be faultless despite national headlines on maternity care. Yes there were too few staff but never once did I feel at risk. As it is quite a small unit compared to LGI etc it did feel as homely as it could get in a strange way IYSWIM!!

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 03/12/2007 13:10

Hi dianemclark - I thought it might be York - like ditdot I have had babies there - 3 in my case. Always a good experience with lovely staff. If that is where you end up I'm sure you will get good care. They have a pool and this last time (April) I was encouraged by the midwife to use a ball, positions that were good for me - but not that easy for her etc.

I was fortunate enough to use JBC twice and I cannot praise it highly enough. Everything about it is amazing. I just wish more people would use it and mroe health professionals would promote it. If it is available to you go for it - and I'd highly recommend a water birth to.
