Severe hemorrhage

Hi
I had a severe hemorrhage right after giving birth to my daughter and lost 2.5 litres of blood. At the time a nurse said I may of required a blood transfusion. They did a test and told me I didn't need a transfusion because I was '5 off' - not sure what that 5 off is for?
Instead I just had iron tablets and then every few months my GP tested my levels, it has taken nearly a year for them to go back to normal though. Has anyone else experienced such a big blood loss and no transfusion?

I had a pph with my first and my hb dropped to just below 5.
I was offered a transfusion but aftet discussion with the consultant decided against.
we decided to manage with fluids and supplements. I felt awful and fluey for a few days but recovered quickly from the birth.

a blood transfusion is a wonderful thing and saves countless of lives but is not without risk.

I thought I was "over" this (9 years on) on but I am remembering waking up in ICU and crying because I wanted my baby, and feeling so alone.

Eventually a photo was sent through but it was of a baby I'd not met yet 😭

I had my baby with me in HDU but I was in no state to care for him, I was drugged up to the eyeballs. The midwife kept on trying to get me to feed him but having canulas in both hands, drains & a catheter I couldn't do it, she got very angry with me, the next morning my mum demanded a bottle but the midwife refused as the request had to come from me, it took a further 24 hours before I was in a fit state to ask myself, my milk never came in.

I lost the same volume in childbirth and had two units of blood, one of packed cells and umpteen saline drips. You must have felt atrocious. Seems baffling not to give a transfusion in that circumstance.

I had a massive obstetric bleed after giving birth to DD2 - approx 2l, if I remember correctly. It was borderline as to whether I was going to have a transfusion but I felt "surprisingly" (their words) fine so they said they'd play it by ear and I didn't end up with one.

Looking back at pictures now, I look horrendously washed out. They gave me iron tablets but it took a while for my colour to come back!

Yep, with both births.
Second one lost 2.8 of blood but was having c-section so they were able to sort it. I had to stay in recovery for 6 hours whilst they observed and sent me back to my room as my blood levels were recovering.

Had emergency c-section with first, no one realised I was haemorrhaging until I stood up for a shower the following day. Husband said I got four steps down the ward and then it just flooded and I keeled over. They think I lost about 3 but they still aren't sure. That one tho they pumped me so full of clotting drugs I had a dvt the following day and ended up on 18,500 units of fragmin for a month, then warfarin.

They do try and avoid transfusions and in my case just monitor for a bit. I now manage myself and seem ok (but my physical health is just stupidly rubbish anyway).
Eldest now 14 and second is 4, just keep an eye on yourself and keep up the iron tablets.

I had an iron transfusion and had a horrendous allergic reaction to it

I had a major haemorrhage and lost 2.5L. I had a blood transfusion.

Steph2331 · 21/11/2021 22:09

I lost 2.6L and received 2 blood transfusions, I think it just depends how your body is reacting too. My womb blood clotted and my womb was compacted and was lucky to not have a hysterectomy. I only remember that my heart rate was extremely high and think this was a reason they had to give transfusions
