Induction after a c-section birth?

Divvy · 28/11/2007 18:09

Thinking ahead really, as only newly pregnant.

History

1st child 4 days early
2nd child 10 days over due, but came the night before planned induction.
3rd child 10 days late, induction.
4th child 10 days late, induction, emergency c-section.

As I seem to carry over term, and need inducing, do they induce after a c-section? Are there risks with induction after a c-section?
Also it will only have been 17 months since c-section, do this have implications at all?

Our local policy is that they won't induce if you've previously had a c-section. Guess hang onto 14 days overdueness to bring it on it's own!

Camillathechicken · 28/11/2007 19:22

policy can vary from hospital to hospital, ours will give two doses of prostin and no more, ARM... some hospitals will not induce at all due to the risk of overstimulating the uterus and increasing risk of rupture.

if you have a history of being late.. then you can put off anything happening until 42 weeks, or more, and have expectant management.

Divvy - have sent you a reply to your message on FB ........

I wouldn't take the risk, epecially not only 17 months later. There is increased risk because induced contractions are stronger than natural ones, and therefore are more likely to rupture the scar.

I think most hospitals won't induce after a section, but I don't think they'd let you go for very long so your chances of ending up in an emergency section are pretty good. I guess youmight have to consider if you are happy to land in another emergency or if youd rather just plan one to avoid the chance of an emergency.

Just for the record - I can categorically say that the hospital which Divvy will be using does allow induction after a CS - I had one with DS2 at the same place

tigger15 · 28/11/2007 22:14

Queen of Quotes - how did it go? My problem is I have a pre-existing medical condition which means they won't let me go past 38/39 weeks so when I get pg again I'll have to find a hospital that has some sort of induction allowed.

Is the hospital in London?

expatinscotland · 28/11/2007 22:15

i'm with Eleusis. I'd go for a repeat CS.

Divvy · 29/11/2007 08:48

I think the chances of a repeat cs are quite high for me, and I am just wondering if it would be better for me to have it all planned in my head for one, rather than a emergency one in the middle of the night again.

Mentally, I dont think I could go over 10 days late, it would cause me grate worry.

All my late ones have also had bowel movements during labour, and over the years this hospital has got quite twitchy about this, compared to 15 years ago.

Tigger this hospital is in northamptonshire.

I'd go for a planned CS.

VictorianSqualor · 29/11/2007 09:06

If you do not want a cs then speak to your hospital about what they would do with induction. I know my hospital is willing to give me an induction with my third baby after two previous cs's. But only the one that goes in your arm rather than the gel, that way they can stop it if need be.

It depends on whether you want to try for a vbac really, if not I'd suggest arranging an el cs for the usual 39 weeks, if so, then discuss options with your consultant, then you could either go to 42ish weeks and be induced, or go to 42ish weeks and have an el cs if there is no way it's coming out!

VictorianSqualor · 29/11/2007 09:09

here is the RCOG paper on the subject of VBAC, if you go to csection 9 it tells you a bit about the possible higher risks of uterine rupture.

VictorianSqualor · 29/11/2007 09:10

oops, section9 not csection 9!freudian slip maybe?
