Is a VBAC likely after emcs failure to progress?

Had an emcr for my first because I only dialated to about 7cm after induction (pessary then drip), nothing was budging that cervix!

Does that mean it's less likely that I'll be able to give birth naturally or have others had this situation and gone on to have a VBAC? Don't want to go down the induction route again if it will ultimately end in another section! Any success stories?

My friend had a VBAC after an EMCS. It doesn't always follow.

Tempusfudgeit · 03/08/2021 20:13

I think they don't like to induce after a CS due to higher risk of rupture.

Xlalalaladdd · 03/08/2021 20:26

Ah is that so? That's good to hear. Maybe the decision will be taken out of my hands then if I don't go into labour naturally

With my first I was really overdue and for 4 days and my cervix literally didn't open at all, like not even 1cm. So I had a CS. With my second I went into labour before her due date, and was properly contracting and probably would have had a VBAC but I wanted a section so they did that. So I don't think it's clear cut. Good luck deciding

Chocolatebuttercream · 03/08/2021 20:29

Sorry that should read I was induced for 4 days.

This is true. There are ways to induce after section, but they don't like to give you the drip.

I had similar OP. I was induced and my contractions were too strong on the drip. I had an EMCS. When I came to have my second, I was advised against another induction. So I was given the choice of going naturally or another section. I chose another section. I actually need to have my second early because of complications anyway, so I would have had to have the section anyway.

@Xlalalaladdd my hospital wont induce for a VBAC you have to go into labour naturally or section. I got to 4cm after 26 hours and then had a section I really want a VBAC this time but anxious it will go the same way and I'm be doubly exhausted

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/08/2021 22:09

I had a VBAC after an EMCS for exactly the same reason. It all went very smoothly.

Inthesky42 · 04/08/2021 13:08

I think because you got beyond 3cm and into active labour there is a fairly good chance a vbac could be successful, assuming you go into labour naturally. I only got to 3cm on the drip with extreme contractions putting baby in distress before I had my EMCS and therefore went for an elective 2nd time around as I never got into 'active' labour

mrssunshinexxx · 04/08/2021 13:43

This is a good point @Inthesky42 I got to 4cm no drip though god knows what I should do

BikeRunSki · 04/08/2021 13:47

I started vbac after emcs, but progressed to fast that I had a uterine rupture and another emcs!

mrssunshinexxx · 04/08/2021 14:13

This scares the hell out of me @BikeRunSki what was your gap?

Xlalalaladdd · 04/08/2021 14:14

Thanks for all your comments, glad to know a VBAC isn't totally off the table (nothing against the c section, I just got really poorly in mine)

@mrssunshinexxx, 3 years and a month

mrssunshinexxx · 04/08/2021 14:30

@BikeRunSki so scary was all ok? They can be really dangerous ! I have 15 month gap but my consultant said risk of rupture is only 1% dunno if that's bollocks

BikeRunSki · 04/08/2021 14:32

@mrssunshinexxx, I’ll message you

Chosennone · 04/08/2021 14:33

I had a successful VBAC 22 months after an ECS due to failure to progress. DC1 was back to back and just couldn't get contractions going properly. DC2 was in a perfect position but was 10 days late. If she hadn't come on the 10th day I was having a section the day after. I also was told they'd only let me labour for around 12 hours. Luckily it was a 6 hour labour and all went well.

fallfallfall · 04/08/2021 14:39

My dd had a beautiful vbac after an emcs.
Twinges at mn, left for the hospital about 8 am, little one born by 10am.

mrssunshinexxx · 04/08/2021 15:59

@Chosennone I've been told I will have 14 hours once in active labour

shas19 · 04/08/2021 22:44

Please have a look on vbac support uk on Facebook. Uterine rupture is less than 1% and nobody can take your decision of how you choose to deliver out of your hands. They can induce after previous sections aswell. I had the propess and the drip. Im going for vba2c and midwives are supportive ad and discussed induction aswell.

mrssunshinexxx · 05/08/2021 08:47

@shas19 I've asked to join 3 times now and don't get accepted don't know why?
My hospital does not induce for VBACs I would refuse induction anyway personal but it's not something I would do. I know 1% so low but slightly higher with smaller gap still low but if you are that percentage the chance of it being fatal to baby is high

Thats strange. They will say about continuous monitoring etc, i will be refusing as there are other signs to suggest rupture before picked up on it and i want to be mobile. There will be consultants that use alot of scare mongering tactics seound vbacs but NICE guidelinessiggest otherwise. There are also alot of risks with another section, no birth is risk free as we know. Whatever you chose just be prepared and do abit of research x

mrssunshinexxx · 05/08/2021 12:32

@shas19 exactly there isn't a no risk option sadly. Yeah they said continuously monitored but they have wireless ones so I can still go in the pool/ move around x

I had 2 c sections for failure to progress.

4cm is my maximum 🤷‍♀️. I had booked in for a c section with my 2nd but went into labour so decided to give it a go.

I literally changed my mind daily whether to go for a Vbac or not. On my due date I had another wobble and booked in the ELCS.

Just to say that my 2nd was a million times easier to recover than my 1st. I laboured for less time and felt pretty amazing after. I felt like I'd been run over after no 1.

Will you regret not trying for a VBAC? If yes then give it a go. If not then book in for your lovely calm controlled C section. Pros and cons to both.
