hi all. don't want to start another cs discussion thread, just feeling bit upset after my appt with consultant and wanted to check this is normal. Have decided on elective cs with my midwife and (now 3 different) doctors and was told by last dr that when went in today i would be booked in (I am 28weeks). Went to appt on my own because thought it would be fairly routine but ended up seeing new consultant and had to go through whole thing again (traumatic birth, tearing, reconstructive surgery later) and he said yes csection probably best way forward, comeback at 35 weeks and I'll book you in. Was bit emotional by this point so couldn't argue and am home now panicking that I'll go into early labout and they'll make me deliver naturally because it doesn't say anything about definite cs in my notes - today consultant wrote "will probably need cs". Logically I know i'm being a bit ridiculous as there'll be more to worry about if i go into labour at 34 weeks but still feeling teary and thought I might get some reassurance here...

I had Elective Cs for ds for similar reasons and was booked in at 34 or 35 weeks. CS was booked for when I was 39 weeks( NICE guidelines state it cannot be any earlier than this in single pregnancies)
If you go Into labour before this I was told I would have emergency CS as plan for CS was written in my hand held notes.
I went into labour 3 days before planned CS - even then MW tried to persuade me to try. But I stood my ground.
Consultant was cross with MW saying that I was under cons care and CS had been DIscussed/Planned for a reason

Please don't worry, stand your ground if you do go into labour early and insist in seeing most senior DR on call And if they dont listen insist they ring your consultant - Soon makes them do what you want!

thank you. guess i was being a bit optimistic thinking that once it is booked in i wouldn't have to fight my corner anymore and could just stop worrying, ds arrived at 37+4 so will probably end up in labout before booked date anyway - maybe i'll get a tshirt printed with "elective cs already booked with Mr X" written on it so there's no confusion! Hope you don't mind me asking, did you feel like you could cope with what happened first time round better after the cs?

Yes, I did feel I could look back and evaluate with less negative emotion, but the physical scars remain!
i did still have feelings that i was unable to deliver either of my dc without loads of medical assistance but realise now that at least my ds did not have to suffer in the way dd did(large facial scar, caused during delivery) and they are both here and healthy
Do you still think about your delivery a lot? How long ago was it? if you don't mind talking about it

beautifuldays · 26/11/2007 19:39

i wasn't booked for my c-section til i was 37 weeks, they booked me in for 39 weeks exactly. i too was paranoid about going in to labour early as my 1st baby was born at 38 weeks. however the hospital re-assured me that it was on their hospital notes that i was having an elective c-section (very similar reasons to yours) and that if i went into labour early to ring them, let them know before i come in and i would still get my section. try not to worry (easier said than done i know)

Sleepdeprived72 · 26/11/2007 19:46

I was booked in at around 34 weeks for delivery at 38 weeks so it doesn't sound abnormal. Consultant was pretty agreed on a CS early in the pregnancy so it didn't really worry me about the booking and therefore securing a CS - think it was more about arranging their diaries than anything else.

youpeskykids · 26/11/2007 19:48

Hi there, don't worry too much (easy to say I know!) I too opted for an elective C section with DS2 and couldn't be booked in until 35 weeks - was given a date at exactly 39 weeks. Everything went as well as could be expected.

I too felt worried beforehand as one of the (many many) reasons I went for elective C Section was so that I was in some sort of control and I could make arrangements for DS1 to be looked after, but at the end of the day, with 4 weeks notice, I still had plenty of time to work things out.

Try to enjoy the last remaining trimester and enjoy watching bump get bigger and spending time with other DCs!

DaisyNightingale · 26/11/2007 19:53

My booking appointment for my elective was at 36 weeks, with the date set then for 39+2.

I too was concerned about going into labour early and was told that if this happened, I would still get my elective, but that any current emergency sections would be dealt with first, which seemed fair enough to me, or I could opot for a trial of labour to see whether I could deliver my self.

DollyPopsOut · 26/11/2007 19:54

At Kings they don't book you for an elective til 36 w for delivery at 39. If you have CS in your notes, you will just have an em CS if you should go into labour. You won't be made to labour if reasons existed for you to have a CS in first place.

Good luck - not long to go until you meet your lovely new baby. It'll be grand

manamana · 26/11/2007 20:35

thanks all. feeling much better now as it seems from all your experiences that i was expecting a bit too much. i also rang back and managed to change the appt to a week earlier which feels like a bit of a step forward and my dh is coming with me next time, he's feeling bad he didn't come this time but we just thought it was going to be a quick booking appt.
No Dosydot I've managed not to think about it generally, just every appt I have to talk about being pregnant/delivery I get really worked up and usually end up crying. Had to go through all reasons for cs again today and dr wanted all details about the reconstruction op which wasn't much fun as he had a medical student with him as well as the nurse/midwife so i felt like i had quite an audience! Brought back lots of baby stuff from my parents at the weekend so gonna get out all the little things and try ad get excited!

good luck

my elective for my second was fab, everything I wanted it to be and the staff were fantastic.

tabimum · 27/11/2007 19:50

I had emergency c-section for DD due to her being undiagnosed breech - was fairly traumatic as had been in labour for 2 days and got to 8cm before they realised. Am booked in this Fri (36+2) for a "discussion" with consultant as to birthing options - but have been told that if decide on c-section it will be at 39 weeks (guess that is the official line). I had also worried about what would happen if I went into labour before that time - but guess that would be another emergency section.

fifisworld · 27/11/2007 20:28

Ive just had my booking in date last week for my elesctive cs and i was 36 weeks.
I have to go in the day before i have ds2 ( 13th Dec) for a pre-op assesment which i thought was a bit to close to delivery day but apparently thats normal.

fifisworld · 27/11/2007 20:32

Oh, and i'll be 39+2 when i go in, i did ask if i could go in at 38+4 as my dad was off work to have ds1 but was totally refused and told it would not be done before 39 weeks unless there was a medical reason
Im also panicking about going into labour early but have been told to just ring them and let them know and i'll get my cs.

msappropriate · 27/11/2007 20:35

Both mine were booked at 36 wks. God knows why cos they knew from 9 wks that I was having one with the second. Then it was hard to get a slot so all the other consultants in same hospital must book more in advance.

dal21 · 28/11/2007 11:18

perfectly normal re not booking it yet. if you go into labour - then it will be an emergency cs. stand your ground if it does come to that. but it most likely won't. relax and enjoy the final few weeks. I know I wish I had put my feet up more. good luck.
