Waters have gone but no contractions

Hi my waters have gone today around half 11. Went to the hospital and checked over. Was then booked in for induction tomorrow at 11. I'm a little confused about what happens next.
I was supposed to be induced on Friday and thought that they would start with pessarys to try and soften cervix to break waters then on the drip if needed.

What is the process if your waters have already gone?
thanks

This happened to me...The contractions never started and I was put on a drip. ....I hope you start contractions soon.

BlueSurfer · 23/06/2021 21:04

If you go into labour before your induction, then you will be allowed to continue. Otherwise, the risk of infection is too great for it to be recommended that you wait longer.

Thanks ladies does that mean I skip the pessary stage?

In my experience (in Ireland) yes you've skipped the pessaries. I had a hind water leak so they used the knitting needle for my waters and then, once there was a bed for me on the labour ward, started on the syntocin drip.

Try and rest tonight and then do lots of walking around etc in the morning to try and get things going. I think you've probably skipped the pessaries. They may give you precautionary antibiotics, or some places can do a rapid test to check for infection to avoid them. For me, I had to have 2 lots of antibiotics during labour and 1 when born (just precaution).

Good luck tomorrow! Hope all goes smoothly... and remmeber your birth plan is preferences not a road map. So please don't stress if jts going off piste and be open to feeling differently than you'd hoped.

catsarebetterthandogs9 · 23/06/2021 21:52

You'll skip the pessary part - the purpose of these is to soften, thin out and dilate you cervix enough to break your waters. You've already broken your waters so you'll go straight to the oxytocin infusion (drip).

I hope it goes well for you Smile

CupOfTPlease · 23/06/2021 21:55

Yes you won't need pessaries but might need the drip if your contractions don't start. You can ask for the epidural before the drip if you want to, remember that.

Just keep an eye on baby moving like normal etc.

Good luck!

Ok thanks☺️Just climbed into bed so hoping to sleep at least a little.

they can still try pessary or go straight to IV drip oxytocin or both.

I had both with DS1: forewaters broke on the Wednesday, went it to be induced on a Friday, had no contractions.
pessary did nothing so moved onto to the good stuff😁

Holidayhomeone · 23/06/2021 21:59

Fingers crossed your contractions start! Good luck Flowers

Iggly · 23/06/2021 21:59

This happened to me but I was having contractions- I just couldn’t feel any pain. But when I put my hands on my bump I could feel something tensing etc. Hospital said I’d have to have a pessary etc the next day.
Then it all ramped you very quickly by that evening and I went into active labour and Dd turned up super quick. It was my second though.

swashbucklecheer · 23/06/2021 22:01

Happened to me. No contractions. They started with a pessary but it fell out while walking around. Soon ramped up after that thou so didn't need a drip.

OllyBJolly · 23/06/2021 22:05

I was told that I had to deliver within 24 hours of waters breaking. Thankfully contractions started naturally. Only 20 minutes of contractions before birth - thankfully had gone to hospital to avoid rush hour traffic!

Hope things start moving soon and you have an easy birth.

Numnumcookie · 23/06/2021 22:08

My waters broke and I didn't have any contractions start either. I still had the pessary before they tried the oxytocin drip. Neither worked for me and I didn't contract/dilate at all, so it was a c section in the end. The c section was fine though, calm experience and went well.

heywhatswrongwitu · 23/06/2021 22:17

I had the same - pessary the following day worked within 2 hours. Everyone's different

AHobbyaweek · 23/06/2021 22:17

You can choose to wait. They like to induce or speed up after 24 hours but it might be worth looking at the risk of different things and deciding what you want to do.
The main thing is keep things out of your vagina so you don increase the risk of infection (the main risk of waters breaking before labour starting).
I wish I had waiting with my last birth and waited for labour to come on its own and would choose to wait but you should make your own decision.

c307 · 24/06/2021 22:47

I was induced for the same reason- waters broke but no contractions. They started me on the pessary but it came out in the bath sadly so moved onto the drip which really got things going! Good luck Smile

Mrsmch123 · 25/06/2021 04:06

Muststopeating · 25/06/2021 09:56

Congratulations! Delighted for you, especially since you avoided the drip, I hated that bloody drip!

Mrsmch123 · 25/06/2021 14:43

Ended up doing it on gas and air even tho I went in to sure I would need an epidural for sure😬
