Bladder control after childbirth

My DS was delivered using forceps 13 days ago, and I had an episiotomy. Initially after the birth when I was doing my pelvic floor exercises I didn't really have much sensation down below & couldn't feel much, but now I can feel that (I think) I'm doing them correctly.
However, when I get the sensation that I have a full bladder & need to wee, I find that I need to dash to the toilet quickly or else I leak urine. Is this normal? And will continuing to do my pelvic floor exercises improve things? Or is it something I should see my GP about?
I'm not leaking urine all the time. The problem only occurs when I have a full bladder.
Please can anyone advise? Thanx.

AFAIK this is completely normal so dont worry!

Same thing happened to me after a v similar (forceps and episiotomy) birth of my DD1 2.5 years ago. I used to have to dash to the loo too (and even had the odd tiny leak !)

But it will get better. If you are doing your pelvic floors then that is great - even better that you can feel them - took me weeks to get to that stage. Just keep doing the exercises and it will sort itself out.

and congrats on your DS!

Definitely, definitely carry on doing your pelvic floor exercises. Given what your body has been through, I don't think you should be worrying at 13 days that you haven't fully regained control yet. I've had 2 episiotomies, did my exercises religiously for a little while after both, and they helped. Then stopped doing them, and realised I needed to carry on (sparing you the details here!) I think pelvic floor exercises are for life. But not an expert, so double check with your HV. And carry on squeezing in the meantime!

ooh oooh, gynae nurse here (love a conversation on pelvic floor exeercises )

they are for life not just for child birth!!!

yes keep up with your pelvic floor exercise, try doing short squeeze exercises and long squeezes too!

after what your poor pelvic floor has been through it will take time to return to 'normal'

all together now, lift and squeeze!!

Very normal - I sat on a folded towel on the sofa for the first two weeks just in case - keep doing the pelvic floor exercises! I need to work harder on mine - I still find (11 months on) that if I wait go to the loo until I have a really full bladder I sometimes leak a little just as I get to the bathroom - think my brain sends the message to my bladder a bit early. I had a ventouse delivery and 2nd degree tear.
