Worst part about a c-section?

Not a good thing to ask but having one in 2 months and I’m not great with pain.. just want to know EVERYTHING! I’ve never been in hospital for anything, think being pregnant is about the second time ever having my blood taken 😂 I’m fine with that and like flu jab type pain but how much worse is it having the cannula put in your hand and the spinal? I’ve heard it’s not the actual spinal that hurts because the stingy bit before it is from the injection to numb the area.

So how bad was it? 😂

I have had both a emergency one and planned one. The planned one went so smoothly. There is nothing too bad about it. They talk you through it and make it a good experience. You will be fine. Afterwards you need to take it easy and stay on top of the painkillers they give you rather than wait until you feel pain. Good luck!

xDragon · 21/05/2021 09:44

The pain is after a c section not during it...worst part for me was having the stuff put through the IV as that stung. Recovery was worse definitely.

thismeansnothing · 21/05/2021 09:45

My planned second one was Not bad at all. (My first one was emergency with general anaesthetic so with my second one j was terrified because I didn't know what would happen.

The hardest part for me was more of a mind over matter thing. Like "omg. I'm Lead here with a massive gaping incision and people rummaging round inside me and I can't feel it" oh and I had a flap that I was numb but could still feel my toes 😳😳

Pain wise the worst bit was a lot of pressure and pushing on top of my bump/ribs It felt like they were going to break them if they carried on.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 21/05/2021 09:47

For me, I found it really weird when the bed was tilted, I didn’t expect that!

The pain wasn’t too bad to be honest. Good luck!

notatallsure313 · 21/05/2021 09:50

I had an emergency and a planned and loved them both. I have a low pain threshold, hate pain, but honestly the drugs they give you are so good afterwards that I really didn't have pain. In fact the opposite was true, I felt so good that when I went home I totally overdid it, went for long hilly walk, and ended up having to rest for a week, not leaving the house.

So make sure you do rest.

Just enjoy the c-section itself. Its really weird not feeling anything! All the staff were really nice and chatty in my planned c-section. It was a good experience.

Garman · 21/05/2021 09:51

Feeling then rummaging and pulling when stitching me up was a shock and not pleasant, didn't even feel the spinal needle. As mentioned the pain is afterwards, not during. The days after it's difficult getting used to pulling yourself up differently put of bed, bending to get things, etc. The worst bit for me was 6 weeks of Innohep injections after my second, that was bullshit.

ArtfulScreamer · 21/05/2021 09:53

I had an EMCS with my DD albeit a calm discussed one rather than a red button corridor race one and to be honest I found having 2 wisdom teeth removed under GA a year after it a worse experience. I recovered well and the only real issues I remember are the first few awkward hobbling days, not being able to drive for a number of weeks, the few times I overdid it I knew about it and the one time I instinctly twisted at the waist to pick something up from the bedside cabinet rather than turning my full body believe me I only made that mistake once.

Littlegoth · 21/05/2021 09:56

The trapped wind after. And being constipated for 5 days. I did a lot of walking up and down. Didn’t help.

Everything else was manageable.

Littlegoth · 21/05/2021 09:57

In fact, manageable doesn’t cover it. Everything else went really well and I recovered like a dream. Wouldn’t even consider giving the other way a go after such a positive experience.

sarah13xx · 21/05/2021 09:58

@notatallsure313 glad you had a good experience. Yip I am prepared to do very little after it and only build up short walks gradually. Hoping maybe after the first week I could take him a very short walk along the street in his pram, will just see how it goes by then! I have two dogs so my partner will be responsible for walking them for the first month or so!

Everyone is different but the worst part for me was the catheter. Just the idea of a tube being up there. And they leave it in for 24 hours afterwards so you have a huge bag of warm pee beside you the whole time. Then the fear of the first wee after they’ve removed it. I didn’t realise I needed to pee because it takes a while for your body to come back to normal and feel the urge. So I held it for so long it was agony when I eventually went. My advice to you would be to remember to try to go, even if it doesn’t feel like you need to.

Other than that, I found three whole c section recovery absolutely fine. The drugs they give you are great. I’m going for an elective one next time round.

sarah13xx · 21/05/2021 10:00

@Littlegoth aw that’s great 😊 have heard the trapped wind feeling is horrible! For some reason I’m freaking out about the operation part and feel like whatever happens after will already be happening by then so I dont need to worry about it so much 🙈 Hope mine goes as smoothly as yours

idontlikealdi · 21/05/2021 10:00

I was sick throughout the section despite the anti-emetics, I wasn't expecting that.

I didn't have any pain at all, I kept on top of pain relief as I had read on here it's harder to get on top of pain once it starts so better to stay on top of it.

sarah13xx · 21/05/2021 10:02

@Koolandorthegang yeah that does freak me out too. Don’t really love the idea of being naked from the waist down in this room of people while a tube is shoved up there either 😂 the only reassuring thing I’m thinking is that hopefully I won’t know when that’s happening. Going to say to them I don’t want to know a thing during it either, might even put earphones in so I don’t hear any cutting or anything 😂🙈 Might get the curtain lowered only a bit so I can see him but I don’t want to actually see him come out!

sarah13xx · 21/05/2021 10:04

@idontlikealdi oh no, that would be awful 🤦🏼‍♀️ So the needle going into your hand/back wasn’t much worse than having blood taken?

Take some Colpermin for the trapped wind, it works really well.

Garman · 21/05/2021 10:05

They'll tell you when they're putting the catheter in, and you'll feel it anyway! I didn't find it too bad, took a few seconds to get used to the sensation that was all. I couldn't have been getting up to go to the toilet in the first 12-18 hours so found it great actually, the "big bag of wee" wasn't in my eye line it was down the side of the bed so it was easy to ignore!

IdblowJonSnow · 21/05/2021 10:05

Hi op.
The worst thing for me was the fear and anxiety beforehand. Mine was elective after a traumatic vaginal delivery with my first child.
I don't remember anything hurting. It was a fairly pleasant experience as these things go!
You can feel a bit of rummaging, nothing more than that for me.
Felt fine after, up and about quickly. They give you lots of pain killers. My stomach was numb and tingly in different spots for months after but very little pain.
Just take it very easy. I stayed in for 2 nights because I wanted to rest, got a private room 2nd night, otherwise I'd have gone home after the first night.
Try not to worry!

Koolandorthegang · 21/05/2021 10:06

I think they let you play music and stuff nowadays for an elective if you ask them so you can lie there listening to spa music or something all zen Smile

I don’t remember hearing or seeing anything but I’d been through a 19 hour labour with all the drugs so I was off my tits at the point of the section Grin

sarah13xx · 21/05/2021 10:06

@LooksLikeImStuckHere okay thanks, had heard of peppermint but hadn’t heard of that one

Didiusfalco · 21/05/2021 10:06

Littlegoth is right. The trapped wind is so so painful. I ended up with horrific diarrhoea (sorry tmi) as it worked it’s way out my system. Everything else was expected. Also don’t let the bastards inject into your stomach when they come to give you the injection for prevention of blood clots. Of course it hurts like hell round there - someone’s just cut it open!

sarah13xx · 21/05/2021 10:08

@IdblowJonSnow okay thanks, I feel like that will probably be me too. Even the alarm going early that morning and the drive there, I’ll just wish I was already lying on the table to get it over with 🙈 that’s good pain-wise! Would love a private room!

I was induced with my first and second child and had a planned c section with my third as he was breech. Honestly my planned c section was much better and easier to heal from than my 2nd birth. I was ripped during delivery and it took me months to heal. I felt very little pain with the c section afterwards though my scar annoys me as I have no stretch marks etc

sarah13xx · 21/05/2021 10:09

@Didiusfalco eeeek 😬 can think of nothing worse! It seems like some people get those and some people don’t. If they make me have them I will need to ask my partner to do it, no way can I do it myself
