Lindo Wing

After terrible (2014) and bad (2019) post delivery care experiences we are considering a private birth for DS number three. Our first thought was to have an NHS delivery at Guy's and St Thomas' then transfer to their Westminster Suite, but I'm worried that on the day they might not have availability and I've heard there are issues with midwife staffing levels.

We might have left it too late (due late-August) but has anyone had recent experience of the Lindo Wing please? I understand their nursery is currently closed but that midwives are on hand to assist with getting baby in/out of their cot for night feeds etc. I've heard that it is worth upgrading from a standard room to a deluxe room?

Also, does anyone know the ballpark figure for consultant fees please as I can't seem to find indications even on the consultant webpages.

Can't help with the Lindo wing myself but i've enquired about consultants. from 32 weeks they're about £7-8kish

turnthebiglightoff · 16/05/2021 22:52

A good friend had her baby privately in London; not as exclusive as the Lindo Wing. Consultant care from 28 weeks including delivery etc was £50k altogether. I visited her and her newborn baby boy the day after he was born and was offered a glass of Moet and a steak supper Grin a huge amount of money.

The standard room is perfectly fine. I was under care of Mr Teoh from first trimester and had elective caesarean- total cost around 24k including all scans, tests, extra 2 nights

Brilliant, thank you for sharing. I have an amazing consultant who I started out with privately (suspected pregnancy loss) and then transferred over to see on the NHS. I'm hoping to stay under his care until as close to the labour as possible if I can. I'm not fixed on the Lindo Wing but it's been the most recommend to me so far.

I gave birth in March at the Lindo wing with the amazing Jasmine Tay as our consultant, she will be on maternity leave in august so won’t be able to deliver your baby. I transferred from nhs to private at 32 weeks and had the most wonderful experiance, the consultant fees were about £7k. The Lindo wing staff were brilliant and had the time to really care, nothing was too much trouble and the level of care after birth was a million times better than my previous two nhs births.
I had a private standard room (plenty big enough and lovely) and a bathroom and my husband stayed the entire time.
My little one needed to go to NICU for 24 hours for help breathing because he came earlier than planned so that part was nhs. I spent most of the day after birth on the NICU and then he came back with me to the Lindo wing. They had made up a box of treats for us all and there were some little presents for him because he’d been poorly.
We were discharged after 48 hours and I cannot fault any part of the care.
I had no confidence in our local nhs care and consultant at 32 weeks and I’m so glad we transferred. Best decision we made

I am due in October and with the Lindo. Fees are just under 10k for my consultant and £10k from the Lindo for a c-section, including a 3 day stay. The anaesthetist is about £1500. I'm going for the standard room.

I moved over at 15 weeks from the NHS and the difference is remarkable.

The best of luck with your decision and the birth!

I had all 3 of my babies at the Lindo Wing under Guy Thorpe Beeston. Excellent in every respect.

I went private to have my twins but not at the Lindo. I was private from 12 wks and didn't get much change out if 20k for hospital, consultant and scans. It's the best 20k I've ever spent and don't regret it at all. The difference in care is huge

hertsmummy14 · 19/05/2021 12:36

Thank you, I'm really grateful for all your positive advice. I had a call with a consultant from the Lindo Wing this morning who was really informative and already I feel so much more reassured, so we are going to proceed with him.

Has anyone tried Dr Ruwan Fernando at the Lindo Wing? I’m trying to chose which consultant to go for. I’m not home in the UK and stuck abroad so can’t meet him. He was very sweet over the phone but I haven’t heard much about him.

Jessica86Shropshire · 05/07/2021 13:38

Firstly I'm sure anyone based there will be exceptional. I'm with Lorin Lakasing who is amazing thus far and I'd really recommend.

I haven't sorry. We decided to go with Dr Tom Prior and so far I'm beyond happy with our decision. The extra appointments, scans and just knowing someone is there if we need advice is brilliant. Sadly they don't think the nursery will have reopened by the time I deliver but a midwife will be there if we need support in the night. Best of luck with your consultant search.

Sorry to reignite this but it's early days after a pretty horrific year of ttc and we are also looking at Dr Prior. Can I ask if you are preparing for a natural or a c section with him as I can't see that he charges differently for them. Also did you have an initial consultation with him first? There's so much and I have had a few bad nhs moments so just want this to be right!

Congratulations! I knew from the outset I'd be having a caesarean so I'm not sure about fee differences sorry. Regarding Dr Prior though I can't recommend him highly enough so far. He's caring, knowledgeable and very patient answering my many (many) questions. I've had a couple of pregnancy loses over the years and feel very supported.

We had a video consultation at first and I knew after that call he was the right choice for us. He's very responsive and I've had regular appointments and scans. Wishing you the best of luck Smile.

Thanks so much I'm the same re caesarian as I have a high risk issue for natural birth so good to know someone who is also. I'm going to arrange a consultation and see if we get the same vibe! I hope all the best for you too, I've had one miscarriage and it's just so nerve wrecking isn't it.

IMB711 · 09/10/2021 20:18

Hi @MamaM25 wanted to know whether you went ahead with Mr Fernando. He's also been recommended to us

Catsstillrock · 09/10/2021 20:34

I had dc2 there with Lorin Lakasing. She was lovely and supportive, understanding my anxiety following multiple miscarriages between dc1 k dc2. Eg she made time and found the facilities to scan me the moment I had a little spotting around 16 weeks.

I agree the post natal care is excellent, midwives that have time, remember your name, listen to what you want. Offering you extra (when I asked for hell getting water at 3am she said ‘sure, but can I bring you a pot of peppermint tea and some biscuits too?’

That is quiet and private (one room per patient). There’s no need to upgrade.

The one thing I should say is it’s more interventionist. I chose Lorin as she was the most supportive consultant of all those I researched and met. I really wanted an intervention free birth. But my husband wanted the reassurance of hospital and I didn’t want it do nhs again.

But as scans suggested he was on the larger side even when pushed to intervene. But even then, with that we had a respectful conversation about what to do. And in the end came to a plan I could live with. Even though it was a c section I didn’t want.

It was far better than any interventionist birth / c section you get on the nhs.

The midwives there encouraged me to stay a third day post natal, telling me I’d feel much much better then. And they were right. The day I got home I could get down on the floor to play with dc1.

I had a temp a few days later and when I called for advice they told me to come in immediately with my baby and an overnight bag (It was evening and I thought they meant come the next day - they said no, no, come now).

It turned out to be nothing but again I was in a private room, carefully checked, a midwife helped me correct my baby’s latch for better breast feeding.

The difference with private is that they have the time and resources to care for you and your baby really really well.

ExpatLivingLondon · 20/07/2022 13:32

I switched from NHS to a consultant at Lindo. So far, everything has gone well, I’m now in the third trimester. I really wanted to use the NHS as private care is expensive. The NHS even set me up to have extra appointments with an OB due to risk factors, but at every appointment I felt like staff were overworked, under-resourced and had too many patients. They seemed focused on getting every patient into the conveyor belt rather than individual care. The facilities were also not clean.

The last concern I had is I want to know who will be delivering my baby so I could vet their credentials (particularly if I need a c-section). The idea of delivery via whoever happens to be on call is unsettling.

Hoping all will continue in a positive direction and the extra expense is all worth it.

Bordesleyhills · 21/07/2022 20:55

Consider Queen Charlottes - imperial medical are the same company and I think do something with the lido wing. I’m am hoping for a birth their on the NHS and then pay £800 a night for one of the rooms if available. So far they’ve been helpful and I visited from West Midlands last week.

What’s the nursery in the Lindo Wing?

TheNoisyCrab · 16/02/2026 22:49

I know this is an old thread, but we are looking at Lindo Wing consultants. We came across Dr Tom Prior in a couple of threads but can’t find many reviews of him online. Does anyone in this thread have any experience of him for delivery, especially for a c section?
