Birth Plan - induction avoidance

Hi all

Hoping for some advice as I’m going round in circles.

I had an emcs with DC1 after a horrific induction as there was meconium in my waters. I want to avoid induction all costs so is it possible to try for a vbac but as soon as they suggest induction if I’m not progressing to push for a csection?

My worst nightmare would be to go through that whole ordeal just to end up with a csection again.

Thanks

Yes - you can request a c section for no reason at all! I’m having my first and I’m requesting one, purely due to anxiety because I have worried all my life about giving birth. There’s a post on just now of a poor lady who went in for induction and has been waiting days yet nothing is happening, her baby’s heart rate is now dropping and she’s been nil by mouth for 2 days yet is still waiting on her section! I would be very firm from the start that a section is what you would like in that case. Many hospitals seem to act as if the choice is induction or induction when it’s absolutely not and you have the right to a section. Check the birth rights website for some good info on it all

Yes, they cannot do anything you don't consent to. I would say you do not consent to an induction so would like a caeserean section.

Thanks both, that’s really good advice. Good luck for your birth @sarah13xx my csection was genuinely lovely so I hope you have a great birth.
I think I’ll just have to make sure my husband and midwife know exactly what I want so they can fight for me if the drs try to insist on induction (like last time).

Write it into your birth plan: does not consent to induction. They cannot do it without your consent.

I haven’t had a second baby but I was told after my emcs that they wouldn’t induce a subsequent labour - ie the options would be natural labour or elcs if it didn’t happen. The risk of rupture is higher with induced labours after c section.

Your plan sounds good and it’s what I would try if I had another. Good luck!

@piglet81 makes a really good point, they won’t do an induction for a VBAC. Atleast they can’t do the drip, they may still try with the pessary?

Something to do with the drip contractions being too risky with your C-section scar

mrssunshinexxx · 24/05/2021 13:05

@piglet81 is right x

Yes of course you can say that. Just say I won’t be having an induction. Most hospital don’t offer induction to women who have had a c section anyway.

With DD2 I had two birth plans - a VBAV plan and a c section plan.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate it. I’m seeing my midwife tomorrow so I’ll raise it then. I didn’t realise induction was more dangerous with a csection scar, weirdly pleased to hear it!

My hospital (John Radcliffe) will induce after a c-section but initially using Foley balloon and then if necessary and mother wishes then they will use the drip for a limited time. However I didn't want this and pushed to wait to try for a vbac until 41+1 but with no signs of labour I then requested an elective section and was given a date for a few days later. I initially considered induction after a horrid experience with my first section but I'm so glad I didn't. An elective is so much easier than an emergency and 5 days post op I feel great. Barely need painkillers. Good luck op.

KeyboardMash · 25/05/2021 15:38

Good luck tomorrow! The amount of pressure people come under to avoid c-sections seems to vary massively. But remember they CANNOT force you to have an induction. You have to consent to treatment. If you don't consent, they can't do it.
