PAPP-A

Hi there :

13 weeks pregnant mum to be here.. had my first lots of blood tests last week following my first scan!
Had a letter today saying that I have "Low PAPP-A hormone levels'
I have had the tests for Down's syndrome, Edwards syndrome and patau's syndrome which has all came back as low risk.

On this letter, it's mentioned I will be put on 150mg of aspirin and to contact my GP for the prescription.
A couple of questions - had anybody had low PAPP-A before and have any more info?
I have read that people normally take 75mg so I'm wondering why it's double the dose?

I don't have a midwife appt until the end of this month so I'm just a little bit anxious and confused about whether I should start taking them straight away.

It says I'm also going to be put under the care of a consultant obstetrician and offered a series of scans, again, the letter gives no more information so I presume I will just have to wait for more letters?

Apologies for the long thread, anxious pregnant lady

Hi OP, it's my second pregnancy, I have low PAPP-A and am currently in hospital for induction at 39+5. I believe it's due to the low PAPP-A they didn't want me going past due date. My understanding is that PAPP-A is a growth hormone so lower levels means your baby may not grow as much due to the placenta and it also increases your risk of developing pre-eclampsia. They address these risks by offering you growth scans at 28, 32, 36 and 39 weeks, putting you on aspirin and placing you under consultant-led care. (From what I can gather either 75-150mg seems to be the dose given just depending on which nhs trust you're in). For what it's worth I've had no issues as a result of the low PAPP-A, our girl is on the smaller side but still growing to a trajectory and within "normal" range. 😊 My consultant was also happy for me to still give birth on the MLU if I'd gone into labour naturally before today, so don't feel like that's automatically not an option for you if that's something you want. I had low PAPP A in my second pregnancy (born Jan21)
I think it is relatively new to screen for it, and so how they handle it varies by trust.
I had 4 additional growth scans in the third trimester, each of which I had a Dr review with after - that was the only difference it made to me, otherwise all my care was still with my community midwife team.
My trust don't prescribe aspirin for it, or advise induction purely for low PAPP A - so long as the scans were fine they were happy for me to go overdue/use the MLU for birth.
