Induction not favourable

hellohithere · 31/03/2021 12:31

Hi all!
Went for an induction today, but consultant said my cervix wasn't favourable. Too high and thick! He said I could be in for days if they did the induction so best not to try yet.
Has anyone else had this? I'm booked back in for the end of the week for another examination, but hoping to go naturally before then. I'm currently 40 weeks.
Really don't want to be in hospital for a really long time!! X

I think induction is always best avoided. It's not very nice. I was induced at 42 weeks.

Survivingmy3yearold · 31/03/2021 13:05

My advice would be to hang fire on an induction unless it's medically necessary ie high blood pressure or reduced movements. You're not technically overdue until 42 weeks and a spontaneous labour generally has a much better outcome for mother and baby as induction is forcing you into labour before your body or baby is ready and is more likely to lead to further interventions. I know it's really hard at this stage as you're likely fed up with being pregnant and desperate to meet baby and you can feel under pressure from healthcare providers to accept an induction. AIMS have some good info on pros and cons of induction and the different methods. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and enjoy your beautiful baby when they arrive Smile

Ahhh thank you Smile I didn't actually want to be induced I was told I had no choice as my first was quite small when she was born. But then go there today and was told no. I'm fine with it, just frustrating when you prep yourself!!! Now hoping to deliver naturally before my next apt! Xx

You ALWAYS have a choice and NICE guidelines state that size of baby alone should not be a reason for induction without another medical need.

This in spades! You always have a choice, please don't let them tell you otherwise. They can advise but size alone isn't a reason to induce. If there really was no choice and they really did need baby here now then they would be looking at other options. It must have been really frustrating to gear yourself up for it to then be sent home. Fingers crossed you go naturally before they want to try again!

Yeah I agree! I might just ask for a sweep when I go back! I don't want to sit there for days. I'll miss my little one at home too much! X

I would not go for it. DC1 was an induction - they omitted to mention my Bishop's score was 0. It ended with a (lovely) EMCS after six long days.

Fingers crossed things start naturally for you, OP!

They won't be able to do a sweep unless you're favourable either unfortunately.
But as PPs said. You always have a choice.
Even if you're not currently favourable though, that can change overnight!

I was induced with 3 out of 4 pregnancies ... my labours were all VERY quick! Not everyone has horror story labours following induction.

MooChops89 · 01/04/2021 09:58

They want to induce you because a previous baby was small? Is this baby small? If not I don't know why they're even offering it, as long as that's the only reason

This baby's size is fine but my first labour was very quick so they are worried about me not having time to get to hospital! Tbh I'm not keen on the induction unless they think it'll work, I'm not going to have it unless the midwife says things have changed since my last examination. Xx

I would defo follow the consultant. I had an induction a few months ago at 38-39 weeks because fluid was apparently too low. It failed. I spent 2 days on the ward with contractions, but when I was examined my bishop score was very low (2 if I remember well). I had to ask for that information, they don't give it! As far as I understand, if your bishop score is under 6-7, induction is not likely to work. They insisted to give me a 2nd dose, and I asked for another scan instead. Fluid was above average Hmm. I discharged myself and baby ended up coming almost a month later. I had to have my waters broken that time because I was way overdue, but cervix was then favourable and baby was ready. Your consultant sounds very sensible, I was quite upset that mine pushed for induction for two separate issues that turned out to be nothing. For what it's worth, one of my children was born at home unplanned because contractions came on very fast, I didn't even attempt going to hospital, just stayed in bed and called an ambulance and it went very well. I am sure you will be totally fine either way!

BrilliantBetty · 01/04/2021 11:26

Both of mine induced for medical reasons at 37w. I would avoid induction unless it's dangerous for baby to stay in.
It was a very long, painful labour, especially with my second. Days in hospital.

Chanel05 · 01/04/2021 13:25

Remember, you can refuse induction and request a section if things get late in the day.

Ooh no I really don't want a section. AT ALL. The thought recovery after with a 3 year old and newborn brings me out in hives haha! Just want a nice natural birth like before lol xx
