Honestly it’s been bugging me for ages but I’m pregnant with my first and was wondering wether the hospital usually provides you a birthing gown or if you bring your own? If it’s optional what did everyone do when they gave birth? And what do you wear to the hospital, any clothes? Do you get changed into your birthing gown straight away or?

Most women wear a top or bra... whatever you're comfortable in really.

Most women don't want a hospital gown

TheChip · 21/02/2021 21:48

I just took my pants off and had whatever top I was wearing on to give birth. Afterwards, I wore my own clothes I had taken with me.

ShinyGreenElephant · 21/02/2021 21:48

I'm pretty sure I was naked for both of mine. Brought oversize tshirts with me but they got lashed right at the beginning. Boobs out least of your worries when you're in labour! A big tshirt or nightie better than a hospital gown though if you want to take something

IndigoJewel · 21/02/2021 21:49

With my first 3 i wore my pyjamas, and when I felt the urge to push i took the bottoms off

With my fourth it was a water birth so I was naked

Yes you wear clothes to the hospital - you'd feel a bit weird turning up to the hospital naked. Like pps I just took my jeans and knickers off.

TheresWaldo · 21/02/2021 21:50

I was already in the hospital as I was induced. I had a cotton nightie on throughout. I binned it after.

Sweettea1 · 21/02/2021 21:53

I had hospital gown on for 1 because waters had broken an I had to walk through the corridor to birthing unit couldn't do that in just my top haha. 2nd was just a t shirt very quick labour so just whipped my pants off.

RoomAtTheEndOfTheWorld · 21/02/2021 21:53

I was in so much pain trying to leave the house to get to the hospital I just turned up in the nearest thing I could put on which was my scruffy tracksuit bottoms, a vest top and a cardi (no bra!)
I ended up in the hospital bed and giving birth in the vest top only and had the hospital bedsheet over my bottom half whenever I wasn't being examined etc.

I had bought a nice special hospital gown to wear but it's still unused in the packet 6 years later, I couldn't have cared less about it once I was at the hospital.
Anything you can easily pull up or down on the top half is probably best to allow for epidural if needed and instant skin to skin once the baby is born. I wouldn't have felt comfortable being topless so my stretchy vest top worked nicely Smile

sproutsnbacon · 21/02/2021 21:53

1st birth naked then a large baggy t shirt.
2nd went to hospital in top cardi and joggers. Took the cardie and joggers off. Didn’t wear a bra and I think I had a sheet over me until the pushing stage. I think I cared at the beginning but I really didn’t by the end.

TheVamoosh · 21/02/2021 21:54

They don't give you anything to wear. I bought special nighties for the purpose that opened at the front so I could breastfeed.

Sweettea1 · 21/02/2021 21:54

Altho I had packed a nightie to wear but wasn't needed.

WeeDangerousSpike · 21/02/2021 21:55

I went in to hospital in tracksuit / lounge trousers and a big t shirt.

I had packed a long pajama top thinking I would wear that, but was in my pj's wen I went into labour anyway.

However, and apparently this is very common, I discovered I needed to be naked, anything touching me was absolutely unbearable. Not just uncomfortable, and it wasn't that I was too hot, although that was part of it, I literally couldn't bear anything touching me. If I could have floated in the air I would have done!

Before hand I would have absolutely said there was no way in hell I would have been naked, but I only really realised I was after it was all over. So I really wouldn't worry too much! Take whatever you think will be comfy, not too hot, not restrictive - but if it doesn't work out that way you can just go with the flow.

Workinghardeveryday · 21/02/2021 21:59

Big nighty which came off straight after because I wanted to do skin to skin, they give you nothing. Just wear whatever your comfortable in really!! Congratulations by the way 😁

happytoday73 · 21/02/2021 22:01

I bought a cheap, huge cotton nightshirt that changed into while in established labour. Buy dark colour if can. Covered but accessible! 😁

Then had maternity PJs for afterwards that could b feed with. Again dark colour good.

I lost quite a lot of fluid/blood in labour so binned the nightshirt and 4 pairs of granny knickers... so had to send my mum out for more.

lalalalands · 21/02/2021 22:03

@Ffsnosexallowed Grin

DC1 I took bottoms off when I got in the pool but kept a bra on,
DC2 changed into a hospital gown that was provided when getting epidural and drip

Aria2015 · 21/02/2021 22:05

I took my own nightgowns but was told both times to change into a hospital gown as they're easier to get on and off. So I was wearing a hospital gown for both.

shhsecretsquirrel · 21/02/2021 22:11

It was in the middle of a heatwave in an internal room with a dyson fan for cooling... I wore nothing Shock

noname55 · 21/02/2021 22:15

I was originally wearing a long tshirt but they gave me a hospital gown to change.

Willow4987 · 21/02/2021 22:20

I had my maternity sleep bra on and nothing else. Made it easy to feed DS1 as it opened in the middle and was comfy

Did end up in a gown for DS1 as I went to theatre for interventions but before that it was just the sleep bra

I also didn’t want anything touching me

MonkeyPuddle · 21/02/2021 22:21

I wore leggings when I went to hospital to be induced, wore their gowns once my waters had been broken cos they kept randomly gushing and I didn’t wanna get my stuff all sogged.
Once I was in active labour I stripped myself naked as anything touching me was just too much. Ended up giving birth by section so was in a gown for theatre.
Wore a nightie about a million sizes too big afterwards so I could cover up but also waft it a bit as the wards are always boiling.

Runnerduck34 · 21/02/2021 22:24

Just comfy maternity clothes for going into hospital and for going home.
I had an old loose cotton nightshirt for labour and birth of DS. For DDs
I had waterbirths so was naked in the birthing pool, but had loose cotton nightie for before and after. Bought new pyjamas for overnight stay in hospital.

leilathebaby · 22/02/2021 09:16

Thanks for the replies guys! I was just losing my mind over it because of me having my first and luckily I’ve never had to go to the hospital! It’s all a bit new and I’m overthinking absolutely everything haha! Your replies are very helpful to me. I think I’m just going to take a long nightie or shirt and go with the flow from there 😊
