Is 1000ml a lot to lose in a post-partum haemorrhage?

I ask because that is how much I lost. I thought it was alot and I needed transfusions but today my GP said it was not a big haemorrhage. Have I been overplaying how bad it was?

I lost 1800ml after first birth.

Have been told by a midwife that up to 500ml is within normal range, up to 1000m is mild(ish), up to 1500m is moderate and over 1500 is severe. It also depends how your hb is after though as to how you feel!!

Littlepoopsy, I thought tiredness was all par for the course after the first birth. I hardly lost any blood after the second birth and I can tell you, tiredness on the scale of severe pph is NOT par for the course. DOn't put up with it if you don't have to (-;

OP's doctor sounds rubbish that he was bored by her questions. My husband was also more traumatised than me by the amount of blood cos he could see it all (I couldn't).
Find a doc who will talk through with you, or contact the hosp where you gave birth and they should go through your old notes with you. Hubby and I found that incrediby helpful.

Just checked my notes and I lost 1,700mls with my elective c-section 6 months ago and needed a transfusion.

The surgeon came to see me the next day and said it was because I had some big blood vessels in my uterus which just bled more than expected. I had been taking Spatone prior to the operation, as advised on the pregnancy section of MN, as I'm a vegetarian. I was told to have my iron levels checked 6 weeks after the birth, however the GP said to wait a little longer until my body had settled down post birth (still haven't got round to it!).

I remember feeling very woozy, practically falling asleep, on the operating table until they gave me a shot of adrenaline and boy did that wake me up.

I lost 1000ml after dd1's birth and ended up with a hb of 7.3 - I was given the choice of having a transfusion but decided to make do with iron supplements.
