Fragmin post c section/covid

Hi all. First time posting my own thread here, hope I've put in the correct place. Long story short I gave birth to my daughter on 4th Feb after 14 days of suffering with covid and ending up in hospital on day 9 on oxygen and struggling with fevers. I was transferred to a maternity hospital and she was delivered via emergency section last Thursday. The last few weeks have been horrific but I am just so happy she is here safe. I was allowed home 2 days after section with some drugs and follow up but I am still very much unwell and struggling with cough, breathlessness etc. The worst is trying to bring up the rubbish on my chest without disturbing my sutures! I was given fragmin for treatment of blood clot in hospital and now as a preventative as due to section/covid I am now double high risk. Nobody showed me or my husband how to inject it and we have watched some videos etc, however I am ending up with little blood spots, are these normal? The bruises on pictures are from the hospital, my other leg is much worse, I am more concerned that I am not injecting properly which is why I am ending up with these spots. I have had no midwife visit or visits to check baby as I have had covid, even though I am no longer contagious and my husbands swab was negative, nobody will come out to us or baby so I have not been able to check if all is normal. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Blimey OP, you must be exhausted, congratulations on your new arrival, and wishing you a speedy recovery Flowers.

Is there a midwife you call phone? I did them in my stomach, it was quite sore and I was advised not to do them in the same spot twice, but was okay other than that. I wouldn't want to advise you try a different part of the body though in case it's not the same for you! I would see if they can give a telephone consultation, or the GP just to check. I am sure its fine, but sounds like an extra worry wondering that you don't need right now!

I think quite normal. How many more do you need to do?
Hold a pillow over your scar when you cough.
Try giving the fragmin in your tummy, pinch as big a pinch of belly fat as you can & stick it in there, easier than a leg.
Feel better soon.

I'm sure I did them.in my thigh, but it was 10 years ago. Blush

Top tip for the cough (I had a chest infection after my emergency C-section) is to get a small firm cushion and press it against your abdomen when you need to cough.

Congrats on bubba. Flowers

I did them in my stomach (first time just anywhere below belly button, second time after csection, used the numb area around the incision so didn’t have to feel it). I seem to remember i got the little blood spots when i was less gently (ie jabbed it in rather than slid) but jabbing myself gives me the heebiejeebies so jabbing was the quickest and least squeamish way.

If it makes you feel better, i didn’t get any instruction either - it’s not a covid thing, they seem to assume everyone is experienced and fine with 2 weeks of self-injection.

Fingers crossed you feel better soon, you must be beyond exhausted you poor thing. Congratulations on your little one, and top tip from me - if your incision is at all raw, hold a sanitary towel tight against it when cough (a cushion if it’s nicely healed). I had a bastard lingering cough when i had mine and my main fear was coughing as the surgeon cut in, but dealing with it afterwards definitely wasn’t pleasant either. Good luck!

Wow you have been in the wars. That sounds like poor care to me regardless of covid. Ask your GP for a video call - maybe they can watch you do the injection and also check the spots? Normally you just grab a fold of skin, insert needle in at 90 degrees, depress plunger and withdraw. It's important to get this right so keep hassling them! Good luck and congratulations x

Coldhandscoldheart · 08/02/2021 21:47

Don’t do it round the incision! You want a good fat bit Grin also I couldn’t bear the feel of the numb bit for about a year afterwards. Bleugh.

FourDecades · 08/02/2021 21:49

Some anticoagulant injections are only licenced to be injected into the stomach.

ShirleyPhallus · 08/02/2021 21:53

God OP that sounds tough, you poor thing!

I did mine in to my very upper thigh / lower bit almost at my bum as that is fattiest. Got DH to do it for me so I couldn’t see but I did get some little bruises. He was mostly nice and quick / firm about it which I think helped!

Good luck, they’re horrible and no one tells you. Hope you enjoy your new baby

Thanks so much for all your replies, I will take on board the advice. I have been told I can do stomach but for some reason, I just feel very fearful of putting it in my stomach so have been using thigh as that's what they were doing in hospital also. I am awaiting a call from GP today for advice on numerous issues. I spoke to midwife on Sunday, but it was just a quick call to check how everything was going. Baby will not even have heal prick test until 2 weeks old along with other tests like hearing which they missed out in hospital due to me having covid. My husband has had no symptoms and luckily remained negative throughout, even checked by hospital and I have said he would be able to bring baby for check but they have refused. Baby is a little jaundice and kept having to go into incubator in hospital and we are now noticing her temperature is hard to control. We feel very isolated as we are new parents and nobody will come near us! I am told I am now longer infectious, although will probably test positive for 90 days.

I have tried using pillows, towels and all kinds for coughing and I still feel like I am doing damage but I guess that's normal. I am only talking ibuprofen and paracetamol for pain relief so I expect it will be sore, I am just so concerned about ending up with an infection, especially after the amount of antibiotics I was treated with in hospital too.

Hopefully GP will be able to give me some advice today on baby and perhaps something for my cough as it's still very productive.

Thanks again for everyone's advice Smile
