HOW SOON HOME

How soon did you go home after an elective csection? I had an emergency first time, but because of pelvis and back problems along with having another big baby, I am having a planned csection.

I think they recommend 3-4 days but I've known people discharge themselves after 48 hours, they can't make you stay!

I went home after 48 hours after both of mine and that was absolutely fine. IME postnatal wards are so understaffed that there really isn't any point being there once you're stable, the catheter's been taken out and if feeding's going OK. I love my own bed too

DD was born at 2am on Sunday by emergency cs. I asked to go home on Monday am and if I'd pushed I think I could have done. They were pushing me out by the following am.

I was desperate to get home at the time as I was SO aware of my screaming baby during the quiet nights and so wanted to be with DH. However, in retrospect, I know that I should have stayed significantly longer. Scar ruptured and breast feeding never really worked. Who knows whether that would have been different if I'd stayed, but I certainly could have done with more support that I got/accepted.

Elective Section Monday 4pm at big hospital, moved to small town hospital Tuesday lunchtime, home on the Friday morning. They did say that I could have gone home on the Thursday but I had my own room, lovely midwives and felt really safe so I stayed the extra day.

I stayed for 4 days after emergency c-section, but only stayed for 2 days after elective c-section. I was very sore both times but much prefered being at home. Even though I got infections, I doubt it would have been any different had I stayed longer.

I had csection at 6am on Sunday, and was at home for lunch the next day.

I asked to have the catheter taken out after 6 hours (I drunk a lot of water until my wee went clear), and the canular taken out (they wanted to keep it in incase of an emergency, but I told them to take it out and that if I need another one they can put another one in).

Get up on your feet as soon as possible and is safe.

If you are both well and the pain it is under control, there is no reason for you to stay in hospital. You recover so much better at home.

I wasn't pushed out, infact I was gagging to get home. Hence the quick exit!

I go in on Monday 5th November, and I am absolutely petrified this time around, with no thanks to my ever caring consultant (who now isn't my consultant) planting nasty seeds in my head!!!! Since my 20 week appointment I have been on edge contemplating what can go wrong, and the past few weeks have spent time crying and worrying I won't be around to spend time with my first DS and our new addition. I am also dreading leaving my DS at home, and justhope and pray everything goes well

I had ds at 1.30 am sat morning by emergency c/s, came home sunday tea time.
I was asking on the sat afternoon when i could go home and they'd said Monday but i pushed to come out earlier as i had loads of help at home etc.
Having elective in 5-6 weeks and im planning on doing the same again, i hated being in hospital.

LiegeAndLief · 02/11/2007 13:37

Am in shock at all these people who stayed for a day or two. I was still glugging the hospital morphine on day 3! Was in for 6 days because of problems with bp - standard stay post-cs at my hospital was 5 days.

helenhismadwife · 02/11/2007 20:16

Loopy Im so sorry to hear you are so stressed and worried about having your section. Its difficult to try to help you feel less worried because I dont know what the awful consultant said to you. I will say though that elective sections are much less stressful than emergencies and can actually be quite lovely and very special.

to answer your orginal question a 3 days is normal providing there are no other problems, this is dependent on how you are feeling though, if you want to go home sooner there is nothing to stop you.

I hope everything goes well for you monday and look forward to hearing about your new arrival
