Maternity Pads

Hi everyone, This may seem like a really dumb question, but can anyone tell me the difference between maternity pads and ordinary sanitary towels? They look the same to me, but numerous articles I've read insist you need maternity pads. Are they just a gimmick or is there a legimate reason why they're necessary? Thanks, Tina

After my first box of maternity pads, I just got big sanitary towels (which I actually thought were better). You will need a lot by the way!

They're more absorbant, thicker, longer, wider and softer (a bit like a barbie mattress!!)

Trust me, you want soft afterwards, a bit of padding is good!

they will be much thicker than regular pads and also don't have a 'dry weave' - I can't remember why not, but I think it's recommended not to have this type!

you also have to change them quite frequentyl in the first few days. it's not nice or pretty..... get yourself a 3 for 2 offer - often at mothercare or boots

Oh, plus also I heard that in some places the midwives may want to check your bleeding (I assume only if there was a problem, as this never happened to me) and it's easier to check on a maternity pad than a regular sanitary towel with gel crystals etc in it.

They're also good if your waters go before you get to the hospital. hth

Maternity pads are massive surf board type things - go for the biggest ones you can find!

Thanks everyone - sounds like maternity pads are the way to go then - I shall stock up and make sure I'm properly prepared.

also get something to sit on as well if coming home soon after the birth as it can tend to leak a bit heavily at times.

i found that for my first period after birth that i again needed massive pads and something to sit on.

You will need more than you think. That was my experience anyway .
