Labour after 9lb 9oz baby

I'm pregnant with my second child (found out the sex yesterday 🤭) anyways I'm extremely nervous for this labour as my first child was 9lb 9oz and I'm 11 stone and still quite small!
I have my midwife appointment this morning through FaceTime, is this something I should maybe bring up!

The labour wasn't traumatic but I pushed him into it with just gas and air thinking he'd be small (was told this)

When I got my private gender scan yesterday she told me I should maybe bring up measure scans just to make sure baby is not going to overcook like big brother.

I just feel really anxious about this now

Please don’t be anxious. I had two huge babies over 10lb. Your body has already given birth to a big baby so you know you haven’t got a narrow pelvis etc and that you gave birth without issues.

They might recommend growth scans but look into the accuracy of these. Also look into positions to give birth in that open up the pelvis.

They might test for gestational diabetes (I was tested and didn’t have it).

@ArosAdraDrosDolig

Just had my midwife appointment she went through my bloods etc from my last tests and says everything was fine in that department. I'm trying to take every day as it comes but I feel this time round with the pandemic I'm more anxious.

I mentioned about my previous labour and says she will get me an appointment with the consultant to go through birth plans and maybe get an extra scan at the end to see what size baby is and take it from there to maybe get induced early to stop complications.

Feel like I've had a huge weight off of my shoulders just speaking about it and actually getting something done about it and able to speak to someone!

Hi op, my last baby was over 9lb too and i am booked to see the consultant at 36 weeks to discuss the birth of next baby. When are you due?

Cr20 · 01/02/2021 10:51

@THATbasicSNOWFLAKE

My over 9lber was my fifth baby! 4 of my 5 have been classed as LGA, i didnt actually have any issues during the delivery apart from it taking a VERY long time

Im due on the 4th july

LucyMaxwellDM · 01/02/2021 10:57

I had two babies over 10lbs both delivered naturally, both fine. In fact the second one pretty much fell out, three pushes, one for waters, one for head, one for body.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 01/02/2021 11:00

Oh well done @LucyMaxwellDM!

Shoulder dystocia is my fear

BurningBenches · 01/02/2021 11:14

All mine have been big.
My first birth was a shit induction but after that despite being large all have been ok. My 3rd was 9lb 10 induced at 42wks, she came out in 2hrs and was my quickest and easiest birth.

My 4th, DH and I thought would likely be 2wks over and about 10.7lb (despite having 3 previous bigger babies no-one was remotely proactively concerned) measured 2.5wks ahead from 28wks.

Our area does routine growth scans at 36/7wks and he was estimated to be just under 9lb at 37wks. So I was referred to a consultant who initially said, yeah, you've had 3 big babies you'll be fine. But for some reason got a second opinion from her senior who said no, we don't want baby to grow bigger than 5kg/11lb. So offered to induce at 40wks. He was 9lb5 when born, so I think would never have been as big as they predicted but equally would have been well over 10lb if he got to 42wks, anyway while it took a bit to get me started it was a fine birth, I only had to push once or twice as he made his own way out.

Expecting DC5 and expecting to be induced again either due to age or size.

Good luck :)

I would say growth scans are useful but need to be taken with a pinch of salt! Baby number 1 plotted top 99percentile for size and weight on scans. Born on 66percentile.

Baby number 2 lower 25 percentile on scans and born on 50 percentile.

The scans are great at helping give you an idea but accuracy isn't great!

Cr20 · 02/02/2021 06:14

@Simskdd

I think it's just knowing that I'll be able to speak to someone about even different birthing options that's maybe useful if baby's arm does get stuck again etc as she says theres a high chance that will happen again so just to be prepared.

I'm just taking each day as it comes but doesn't help when people start putting things in my head when I talk to them and my brain runs before a can even walk!

Just going to accept that the midwives have to do what they have to do even if it's not what I want. Asking as baby is healthy x

I agree it is good to have that appointment it place for 36 weeks, i am kind of hoping that the fact my youngest child will be under 2 when this one is born may help me go into labour a week or so early. My eldest two are less than 18m apart and dc2 was born at 38 weeks.

Simskdd · 02/02/2021 12:14

If it helps give you peace of mind or an idea then definitely do itSmile

Ginandshinythings · 06/02/2021 20:50

Hi, I'm currently pregnant. My first born was 10.8! Emcs after a long induction, he just wouldn't budge. Il be having a growth scan at twenty six weeks and then I get to decide how I'd like to birth. I spoke to my consultant this week and mentioned how out growth scans are, he said they allow for a 1.5lb difference either way...i think that's huge! I was told to prepare for a nine pound baby last time.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 06/02/2021 20:53

26 weeks seems early! I have been told 36! Mine was no where near as big as yours but how accurate can a 26 week scan be! When are you due @Ginandshinythings

lilyfire · 06/02/2021 20:54

My first as 11lb 3 oz so was worried the second two might be bigger but they were both just under 10lb and so it was fine. Reading that back have realised might not be reassuring - but the point is they were both appreciably smaller than first one.

Ginandshinythings · 06/02/2021 21:38

@thatbasicsnowflake sorry! 36 weeks is my growth scan, due in June! Wow @lilyfire that's some impressive babies you've grown there, congratulations!

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 07/02/2021 07:41

That makes more sense @Ginandshinythings, i'm due early July so not too far behind you

Quail15 · 08/02/2021 12:01

I was told my daughter would be average size when born ( all other babies in the family have been between 5-8 lbs). I had an emergency induction at 39 weeks due to developing severe obstetric cholestasis ( OC) and pushed her out in the birthing pool - she was 9lbs 12 ! She was definitely a shock. Unfortunately she did a bit of damage coming out and due to my OC I was higher risk of pp bleeding - I ended up in emergency surgery with a massive PPH and had to be admitted to HDU for 3 days.

I'm pregnant with my 2nd, currently 29 weeks. I had a phone appointment with a consultant last week who just wanted to talk about my risk of OC and dismissed my concerns about this baby on track to be bigger than my 1st. Consultant arranged to see again me 2 days before my due date 🙄.

I spoke to my midwife about my concerns at leaving it so long as I had hoped to be induced at 38 weeks and they are kindly arranging a scan and review with the prenatal team at 36 weeks for me.

Definitely push for what you want. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 08/02/2021 12:04

@Quail15 glad you are getting seen at 36 weeks! Have you been spoken to about having a drip put in once baby is born? I had this last time and it was fine
