4cm for over 24 hours?

Hello, has anyone had this? I have long ‘early labour’ e.g. days but the contractions still hurt so I’m exhausted. With my 2nd child, I was 4cm for over 24 hours and even at 5cm (I had a sweep on the induction ward - I wasn’t induced but they kept me in as I was having reduced movements in labour) I still wasn’t in active labour.

I wasn’t in active labour until 6cm & went from 5cm to him being born in 5 hours.

I just don’t understand how 4cm is classed as active but it wasn’t for me! Has anyone else had this?

I’m due my third & worried it’ll be another long, exhausting labour again OR I don’t think I’m in proper labour so I won’t go to the hospital & end up having an unplanned HB Grin

Hello,

I was 4cm dilated for over 24 hours and was having very bad contractions during that time, in the end I ended up having to have an emergency section as i wasnt progressing despite numerous sweeps and drugs. My waters broke early morning but didnt end up going into hospital until the afternoon when my contractions were getting stronger and I stayed in hospital until delivery the following afternoon. I was surprised that I kept being told I was only 4cm with the pain I was in!

Good morning. I've literally just had my baby number 5 two weeks ago. My body literally does the longest labours ever. My first was 48 hrs. Second born was alson48 hours and had to be put on the horrible drip to speed things up. My 3rd baby was 36 hours and my 4th was 32 hours. I was really hoping my 5th baby would be quicker as I also have a 2 week build up of slow labour. I actually was 2cm dilated for a week and a day prior to having my 5th baby. Then went to hospital to discover I was 4cm. Begged for the drip as they were getting intense. Had to have my waters broke and a sweep also. It was hard work but all worth it in the end. I got to hospital at 4am after struggling at home and had her at 12.07 16th jan. I reckon if they hadn't broken my waters and given me the sweep I would have been in labour for another day. It definitely does speed things up.

every woman is different. For your body, and this particular labour, 4cm wasn’t ‘active’ for you, your body hasn’t read the textbook

there’s also a study that suggests labour shouldn’t be counted as active until 6cm, so maybe your body has read that study!
