Waters broke more than 24 hrs - gel induction didn’t work

My waters broke yesterday and I’ve been given a Prostaglandin Gel more than 6 hrs ago. I still don’t have any contractions. I’m 41 weeks and 3 days

I’m unsure the hormone drip will work... not sure what to do next.

Any mothers out there with similar experiences, what did you do next and what was your experience?

Thanks

Mine broke and 36 hours later they put me on the synthetic oxytocin drip.
I don't want to worry you, but the drip was very unpleasant and intense. If I had known, I would have refused and requested a c section then and there.

(Back story: my baby was in an awkward position ROP, had an epidural as the drip was so intense 12+ hours, pushed for 2 hours, so there was no chance I was going to birth him on my back. We ended up having c section.
For my 2nd baby, I had a planned c section and this was very smooth.

(From waters breaking to birth was 55 hours and we both had infections)

Thank you for sharing your experience, I’m seriously now considering the c section

I’m amazed they used a gel as it can introduce infection. I had the drip, it was hard work but I had an epidural (midwife suggested it before the drip but I was an idiot and waited 3 hours). Was about 13 hours from drip to delivery.

Take the advice of the medical professionals who are with you and can see all your vitals.

Good luck OP, not long til you meet your baby 🙂

I asked for the 12 hour pessary as the gel Didn't work. They wanted the drip asap but I pushed for the pessary. Also check which waters broke. It was my back waters so they broke my front waters and DD was here 40 mins later

FitzyA · 30/01/2021 09:58

I’ll check this...I think it was my back waters. Thank you

Thank you. They are not being very helpful tbh... the new shift has just started so I’ll ask the new midwife, hopefully this one will give me more advice

I wanted to avoid the drip at all costs! They were very persistent but I stood my ground. Just because your waters have broken doesn't mean it has to be rushed (despite what they tell you). Obviously the clock is ticking and you need to make decisions based on the risks but remember- they are YOUR decisions to make. I'd try everything before a c section or drip- like I said they broke my main waters and then it got started!

Can’t help on the practicalities but please ask specifically if they have swabbed you for Group B Strep and that you be given antibiotics if positive.
