Tearing 2nd degree need further stitching?

Hi ladies, so I am a very confused mom! I laboured and went from 2cm to birth and in an hour after having cluster contractions, show and early labour for a week prior!

Anyhow my midwife was so shocked that I was crowning she didn't instruct me at all when I said I felt I needed to push... She didn't say breathe or slow down. To cut a long story short I think I didn't allow my perennial to stretch. I remember waiting a min for instructions but when she didn't respond I thought it's ok to push.

She then after the birth told me I had a second degree tear that needed to be stitched up. She then stitched me up.

But I haven't felt right since and thought it wasn't right. Basically where there once was skin covering the pelvic floor and muscles there is nothing. I have what feels like an open wound. I had a midwife check me and she said I needed further stitching and sent me back to hospital. The Drs at the hospital....and I mean Drs all 3 of them looked and agreed with senior that I don't need anything and that the skin between vagina and anus will all heal over by itself.

I can't help but feel a little confused. Was anyone else left like this? Not sure what that bit of skin is called! Is it perennial? Does it not need to be stitched? Feels like bulge!

Mine felt sooo weird afterwards. My stitches actually got infected and the GP removed them! The best I can advise to encourage healing is sit I a bath with lots of salt poured into it, worked wonders for my infection and the wounds healed properly. The Gp also said its kind of like stitching up meat that's been pounded with a meat hammer so stitching is rarely problem-free (sorry to be so graphic!)

Thank you.... That's exactly how it feels anyway! Sorry for my ignorance but did your perennial skin heal itself?

Do you mean perineum?
Is there an open bit or is it just thinner there?

Simskdd · 30/01/2021 22:48

So basically when I looked down there I have an opening all the way to the anus. The year as shown in pic below is still there. I can see the perennial muscle. The skin that once was between the two and that covered the perennial is basically still torn and not stitched up. Is it meant to have been stitched up?

*Sorry the tear is as shown in pic

I had this and wasn't stitched as the midwife thought it would heal and I was too tired to argue! Went to GP who told me soon as I laid down, yes I see what you mean however there's nothing I can do! She said it would be classed as cosmetic as I could pass urine and have a bowl movement! It has healed a bit more now but the area is very delicate and I can't bring myself to even shave now! I never had this with my first and I was stitched then, all healed very well with that. I wish I'd of asked for stitches 😢 I feel for you!

It’s not routine to resuture a broken down perineal wound.
It will heal by secondary intention. Keep it clean, bath and shower regularly, air dry and change pad regularly. Take analgesia as needed.
It’s super normal to have perineal trauma after birth especially when first baby. Hopefully will feel better soon

I was stitched the first time with a 2nd degree tear - took bloody ages and took months to heal. Ended up with granulated tissue that had to be burned off with silver nitrate

I had a 2nd degree tear with the second and it was left to heal with no stitches. It didn't seem to take as long to heal and was much more comfortable afterwards compared to the stitching the first time. The issue with restitching is that they would need to reopen the wounds each side before stitching so the open ends can join together

A bit different as I had an episiotomy but I did have the stitches rupture and everything felt completely wrong for a while. GP sent me for further stitches and, like you, the drs in hospital told me it would heal. It took 12 weeks from that appointment but is now much improved. Try to give it time and if you still feel things are wrong in a few weeks then you can always go back to your gp.

I was advised to keep everything as clean and dry as possible. I also had short salt baths.

Hope you feel some improvement soon

I had a second degree tear with my first and chose to not have stitches. I healed fine and just rested in bed for a week with lots of rest.

I used distilled liquid witch hazel and poured on the maternity pad to reduce swelling.

Hi ladies, thanks so much. I've been diagnosed with uti today! So that's probably why I was feeling particularly uncomfortable! .

I will leave it and see how I go. I kin the last 24hrs have had alot of burning and shooting pains down there. I'm hoping the antibiotics help. Thank you

Bless you. The witch hazel will help with the burning. The mid wife recommended it, if you’re unsure ask their advice.

I've contacted my gp to see if there's anything they can prescribe. I googled it and there are some products in America that can be bought that are anaesthetic. I really need something to numb the area

Did anyone here get anything prescribed for it?

I got some lidocaine gel from the gynaecologist
