VBAC-YAY MY CONSULTANT SAID GO FOR IT!!!!

YES! I am so happy, I went to my consultant today, after having had an em cs with placental abruption at 32wks with dd and then an el-cs with ds, to find out what my birth choices were.

She had printed out the guidelines from the royal college of obs and gynae and underlined everything that could apply to me.

Said that although VBA2C wasnt as regular as VBAC the risks were still minute and as long as I understood them she was happy to sypport me.
We discussed everything and she was great!

Even told me to keep what she'd printed out so that any midwives/doctors that questioned it during labour could be shown the notes we had made!

Also said that she didnt want worries about babies size preventing it for me so has booke dme in for two growth scans, and has booked me in for a doppler at 24 weeks to see my risk of pre-eclampsia as its possible that was the reason I had placental abruption the first time. That way every avenue that could be used to say I need a cs has been explored and hopefully discounted by the time labour starts!!

Could she be any better??

I've definitely found my consultant much more encouraging & positive about my VBAC wishes than any of the m/w's I've seen. I know it makes no real odds to him at the actual birth as he's highly unlikley to even know I'm in hospital & the m/ws do have to deal with you but on Monday (I'm now 38 weeks) it was the first time I'd seen a m/w who was as keen on the idea. My own m/w was on holiday, this one even made me re-think my negativity towards induction if I go overdue again.
Good luck Lorayn whatever the outcome.

OOOh I AM in that catchment area (had DD there). I am trying to avoid the egyptian chap - he broke my waters and it hurt (the gitwizard). May I ask this lady's name?

Lorayn · 31/10/2007 10:55

I'm not actually sure, the consultant she is under is called Miss Hurley, but I think the doctor I see is called Miss Makin or something, I cant read her signature! But I would assume that as Miss Hurley is her consultant that it would be similiar for any other doctors under her.

Lorayn, I am with the JR and was told the other day by a senior registrar that the hospital doesn't approve of VBA2C, whether at hospital or home! He told me the rupture rate was 5%, which I've never seen quoted before in any study but he refused to tell me what studies he had got that figure from, just that "We, at the JR, work with that figure". So obviously "we" doesn't include your lovely Miss Hurley/Makin. I wonder how I can go about changing consultants...

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 31/10/2007 15:06

Vaca just wriote nd ask to be swapped to the other list- why not?

vacaloca · 31/10/2007 15:08

I was considering just cancelling any future consultant appointments but I also have thyroid problems so it would be good to be checked by someone. Would I write to my existing consultant or the guy I saw or a general letter to, er, who? [thicko emoticon]

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 31/10/2007 15:25

I cancelled all my furure appointments with the consultation (but don't have medical problems) and just wrote to the department generally as no consultant name on letter. maybe address to clinic secretary?

paranoidmummy · 31/10/2007 16:08

just had to say... WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Lorayn, i'm so happy for you. at work so only a quick one... will post more later. yay again

Lorayn · 31/10/2007 16:50

vacaloca, do you want me to find what it was the consultant/doctor printed me off online somewhere??
She said its what they as obstetricians at JR use for guidelines.

If he still says no you are entitled to ask to change consultants to someone who will support you.

vacaloca, this is what I was given, if you go to page4, the last paragraph it explains that the higher risk after 2 or more c-sections is minimal for uterine rupture, triple for hysterctomy after uterine rupture and double for transfusions. Thats the stuff I had to say I was happy with and understood.

I also agreed to constant monitoring (for now )

Apparently as it is a new study it shocked many obstetricians (according to the doctor anyway) but is the most recent reliable source of information re:VAB2C.

Good Luck!

Thank you, Lorayn, that's really useful! Funnily enough that's the study I mentioned to the guy I saw and he claimed he'd never heard of it and 'I shouldn't believe everything I read on the internet'. The fact that it is a proper study apparently has little relevance because I read it on a screen. As if they didn't read anything on the internet... He said I didn't need to try and convince him of anything (I wasn't trying at all) because at the next appointment I would be seeing Dr Impey himself and could argue all I wanted with him. I have no interest in arguing with anyone, I'm having a homebirth!

Lorayn · 31/10/2007 18:23

Ha! Well the JR does use that study so that man was downright bloody silly!
I hope if you do continue your monitoring at the JR you manage to get someone to agree with you, it can be helpful just for the extra scans etc I'm being given, just incase.

Hey Miss Hurley is my consultant on my post natal notes. She was nice. Victoria the surgeon is also lovely if you get a c-section, she sewed my tummy muscles together so I had a totally flat tum two days post partum

Good luck with the vBAC!
