Anyone had a PPH during Csection - then had another baby after?

Hello everyone

Just looking to see if I can find someone who's had a similar experience to me, and can offer any advice.

Had a large PPH with first baby - was an elective c section so should have been straightforward essentially, however my uterus didn't contract back and I lost ALOT of blood.

Now coming up to having my second baby soon and the nerves are hitting me, I am having another C section again and am petrified of it happening again.

Have spoken to Midwife who says they will be more aware of it, but can't say that installs a lot of hope in me.

I've heard a lot of story's of PPH during delivery's however never any during an elective c section.

Has anyone here had a PPH during a c section, preferably elective and then gone on to have a second baby who can tell me their experience?

Thanks
Xxx

I had an emergency section after a long labour with my first in 2012 lost 1.5 litres of blood (I think) and had to have transfusions. I had an atonic? uterus and it did not contract back. I was quite overweight though.

My second child was born by elective section (because she was breech plus I did not want to go through the same again) in 2015 and I lost just less than a litre that time and no transfusions. They had blood on standby though in the room in case it was needed. It was the same issue though even though it was elective that I had an atonic uterus which caused issues when the baby was out. The recovery was no where near as bad the second time though and they did seem really prepared. I had meetings with the consultants at the hospital towards the due date and a pre-op meeting the day before and that put my mind at ease.

Hope it all goes well for you.

Yes me. Had a planned section due to placenta previa for my first baby. They used the balloon to stop the bleed - I lost just under 2 litres I believe during my section. I've since had 2 more children via c-secion with no problems.

I didn't realise it was a serious an issue at the time, as nobody really made a big deal about it at the time. I only realised after watching a one born every minute how dangerous it could be. Can't remember is being mentioned again massively, but I didn't have placenta previa with my latter pregnancies. My experience in hospital was different afterwards, first time I was kept in the maternity ward in a single room - again thought this was normal until my other children were born!!

Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope it all goes smoothly this time round

Thank you both!

My midwife told me that as soon as baby is born they should put me straight on a syntocin drip to prevent another PPH. And Ive tried to do some research on this but cannot find anything where anyone has mentioned being put on this drip during a section?! So I'm wondering if she's got that wrong - I don't see my consultant again for another 3 weeks so I haven't had the chance to talk to him yet but I will next time.

I'm petrified of it happening again especially now my hubby can't stay with me on the ward but I'm trying to stay positive x

Sounds like they will be well prepared if anything does go untoward. Do chat with your midwives, and consultant as they will be able to reassure you and talk you through their plans! When I had my third I was out of hospital after 48 hours (my second baby had a suspected infection), and the recovery was much much quicker. Totally different experience!

Good luck with it all.

Had one with my first - retained placenta and PPH. Second was fine. Had a planned section with first and afterwards when I was wheeled out the room I haemorrhaged. Due 4 th baby in April and not going to lie I am shitting myself. Consultant I’m under said not sure why it happened but we can come up with a plan at 36 week appointment. It’s what I’m most scared about i think x

Planned section with third baby

Interested in this. I had a PPH and lost 2.5L, had transfusions and also almost a hysterectomy.

Like a PP said, they were quite casual about the whole thing but I nearly lost my life with that level of blood loss. I think only 6/1000 births lose 2.5L or more.

Did you have to fight for an elcs? I worry they'd push for a vbac and I'd end up with another emcs.

I had an elective c section with my first, which like yours should have been uncomplicated, however I lost 2.1l and had a blood transfusion. I remember being in theatre and feeling so out of it and it just being a very scary experience. My recovery also seemed to take a very long time afterwards.

When I had my second I made sure they knew I was terrified about blood loss at every midwife and consultant appointment. The consultant recommended a c section on this basis, as although blood loss is usually greater in a c section, they felt it could be better managed, although it was my choice and they said they would support a VBAC and put the necessary safety measures in place. I went with their recommendation!

On the day, I made sure the midwife, anaesthetist & surgeon all knew my concerns. They gave me an octopus cannula which has several lines in instead of just the one so they could administer blood quickly if needed. I also had the synctocinon as soon as baby was out. I lost 1l of blood, which I guess is still a fair bit, but I felt amazing afterwards and was discharged 24hrs later - it was a totally different experience.

Emcs with first baby and had pph and general feeling like crap afterwards. Same as others I wasn’t really aware of how bad it really had been, although I think DH had more idea

Second baby elcs and all went smoothly. I have no idea what they did as it was 3 years ago now, but they specifically told me what steps and drugs they were going to give in case of any issues. Thankfully it was fine and the experience recovery was definitely so much better than the first time

I’m happy with stopping at 2 kids for many reasons, but the birth is definitely one of them

That's made me feel so much better to hear someone being given the syntocin drip after baby is out. Your the first person I've heard who's also had it, after my midwife mentioned it and I couldn't find anything on it I thought she might've got it wrong - but obviously not! So thank you that's made me feel so much better xx

I had the syntocinon drop after my EMCS, i didn't realise it was to stop a PPH, I thought it happened to everyone! They made it sound very routine.
