Did you labour at term or early after EMCS at full dilation

Screwcorona · 08/01/2021 18:31

I had an emergency csection with my first child after full dilation.

I'm 20weeks pregnant and consultant has told me there are high rates of preterm labour in my situation.

So I just want to ask your experiences in second pregnancy. Did you make it to term? I have ELCS booked at 39weeks and would like to make it to term, at least hoping for 37 weeks but I am feeling very worried and afraid now of early labour

Bump...has anyone had similar

I did. Well either 9cm or 10cm - they couldn’t decide but they also couldn’t get her out as she was stuck.

Went into labour at 39+2 with my second child.

But then I went into labour at 39+2 with my first child also.

I am nothing if not consistent! Grin

Nothing was said to me about risks of pre term labour. They did tell me far more detail than I wanted to know about how they would induce if necessary. (Thankfully not necessary as it involved a balloon in a place that I’m fairly certain is not where god intended for balloons to go!)

Lelophants · 09/01/2021 20:39

Why did they say there is risk of preterm? Mine was emcs at around 9cm but it wasn't a terrible rush just what I wanted by that point and he was back to back. I wasn't told anything afterwards.

WolfHunter · 09/01/2021 20:41

My first was 41+1 EMCS fully dilated they had to push dc back up to get them out. Next dc was born at 39 weeks elective. Was a great experience after the emergency! We were home after 25 hours!

Screwcorona · 09/01/2021 21:52

Thank you for your replies. I'm not totally sure why but the consultant said theres high risk with full dilation emcs. I regret not asking more but I didnt think at the time.

I've got an appointment with premature labour prevention at the hospital so will ask to understand exactly what the problem is

I'm comforted to hear you went at least to 39weeks

Also not sure why you have been warned about pre-term labour, unless there was something specific about your situation (other than just the EMCS) that may cause it? I've checked the research, but all I can find is an Australian study which noted an increase in pre-term labour in subsequent pregnancies after a c-section in the final stage of labour (which I guess comes with likely full dilation), but while the increase is significant, it increases your chances from very small to still small.

I had an EMCS after baby getting stuck fully dilated (needed to be pushed back up like WolfHunter), and am expecting my second in about 8 weeks. No mention of risk of pre-term labour at all and I have been under consultant care due to some other challenges.

Will be interested to know what the pre-term labour prevention team says (now feel like I should be packing my hospital bag as I'm not exactly taking it easy!)

Interested in this.

I was 10cm and had an emcs.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 10/01/2021 17:13

Went into labour at 39 weeks exactly with dc2. Dc1 was an emcs at full dilation following pushing and mid pelvis failed forceps. I actually lasted longer with dc2 as I went into labour at 38 plus 4 with dc1.

@WhereIsThisGoing I'm going to ask them on thursday a bit more about why and the rates. I've not seen my notes from my first birth so I wonder if it mentions damage to my cervix or something. Though nothing like that was mentioned by consultant.

My sister in law recently had her 3rd after her 2nd was emcs after full dilation and baby being pushed back up too. Her 3rd did come 6weeks early but she hadn't bee forewarned like me, nor seen anyone about it. I wonder if it's been newly implemented in my local hospital.

It can't hurt to have your bags packed early and be tuned in for any signs of labour. Hopefully we all have smooth full term births this time round

@Dinosauratemydaffodils that's good then, hope the birth was easier this time round

I would be really interested to know this too. My DC was 7 weeks premature and I had an emergency csection at full dilation too, so I am really nervous at the thought of having a second DC incase they are also premature (double whammy of risk of having previously had a premature baby alongside having had a csection at full dilation).
There is a little bit of information on Tommys website about the risk relating to late stage csection but not loads.

@Screwcorona were the premature labour prevention team able to shed any light on it?

Hope your pregnancy is smooth and everything goes well for you.

Screwcorona · 15/01/2021 13:58

@Xmasdiet thanks for asking. I had a scan of my cervix and at the moment thankfully it is closed and the length its supposed to be. I'm going to be scanned again after my next midwife appointment in February. They've said they want to keep monitoring me so that any opening of the cervix is flagged so that I can be advised accordingly.

They checked for scar tissue around the cervix and around my scar. The doctor said that in late csection theres often damage to the cervix in the womb side, that can cause it to start opening when the baby gets bigger and puts pressure on it. This is painless so they have started to do these checks on women who had births like us.

When you get pregnant next time flag this up to your midwife as it doesnt sound like every hospital does the same at the moment

I had an emcs after 25 hr labour, full dilation etc, at 40+3; baby was back-to-back.

My other child went to elcs at 40+10, with no labour at all, consultant had hoped for VBAC but baby wasn't keenWink

Have you another condition that might cause them to think you'll have early Labour? I have a long cycle, so I think it just took longer to grow my children- neither was particularly big at birth.

Screwcorona · 15/01/2021 15:48

@NavyFlask that's reassuring..I'm hoping I go to full term. No other indication as far as I know. Apart from the pain in my cervix since the first birth, that doesnt seem to be why they brought me in though.
My first went to due date before induction so fingers crossed I'm full term. I just don't want a stressful birth this time

NavyFlask · 15/01/2021 16:33

I cannot stress the difference between my emcs and elcs- honestly the experiences were so so different.
Hope all goes well Thanks

Screwcorona · 15/01/2021 17:23

Thank you 🤞 fingers crossed I make 39 weeks

Thank you for updating! My hospital (Scotland) is definitely not doing this yet, but will ask my midwife at the next appointment.

Xmasdiet · 17/01/2021 13:03

Just wanted to say thanks for updating too. That is really interesting, and good to know that there is some monitoring that can be done. Reassuring too from pp that most seem to go to term!

Hope everything goes smoothly for you both @Screwcorona and @WhereIsThisGoing with the rest of your pregnancies.

Screwcorona · 19/05/2021 16:33

Just wanted to update. We made it to 39 weeks! Baby has been born today and is in my arms snoozing ❤

Had false labour at 36 weeks and that stopped whilst I was in hospital thankfully. So glad it all went well and will now be thankful with my 2 children and not plan to have any more 🤣 too stressful

SnackSizeRaisin · 19/05/2021 19:42

Congratulations! Definitely with you on the stress - due my second in 2 weeks by ELCS and that will definitely be it!

Knittingdots · 04/12/2025 11:48

So grateful to read your update!! I’ve just been told by my consultant that I’m at risk of preterm labour after my emcs at 41+6weeks with my back to back baby after a loooong labour! And I’ve been spiralling thinking of what it would be like. So I’m really thankful to read this thread
