Anyone know why they induce early for slightly small baby?

In my area they usually let you go to 42 weeks before induction but i've had a growth scan and they are expecting my baby to be a bit small, not a lot, maybe around 6 to 7lb at the most. Anyway the consultant said to treat it as a normal birth but if i haven't gone in to labour by 10 days over to induce me. I don't really know why this is? Surely if he is expected to be a little small then the longer he is in there the better? Anyone had similar experience or can anyone think of a reason why this has been suggested. I'm 6 days over now and really want to avoid the induction if i can!

Wel did some more tweaking, still getting pains, anywhere between 4 and 9 mins apart mostly lasting about 35 secs, been getting them for about an hour and a half now, hope they carry on

That sounds really promising! (I never had a show with ds2, born 40+8, btw. I had had noises made about induction at 40+10, for no other reason than because they do (Germany) - ds2 was pretty small for his gestation, but perfectly within the norm - not quite 7lb).

(Oh, just seen you have had a show. Must read whole thread before posting)

Just wanted to say good luck - am due to be induced on Thursday - so am following any threads about induction with great interest at mo. Have been trying all the natural induction ideas but no luck so far - only 39+1 so body just may not be ready yet . Hope you're having proper contractions and this is the real thing for you!

berolina · 29/10/2007 01:32

Why so early induction, Anna?

I believe sex (sorry) helped get ds2 on his way.

AnnainNZ · 29/10/2007 01:36

High blood pressure before and during pregnancy.

Have tried sex, acupressure, curry, nipple stim, bouncing on exercise ball, etc etc. Nada.

Trying to get in a positive frame of mind about induction now, so that I'm not too tense/worried about it.

Walk lots, if you can. Make sure you discuss procedures thoroughly beforehand - they might give you some influence over structure and speed of the whole procedure.

AnnainNZ · 29/10/2007 01:48

Thanks

Off to have another bath and try some of this visualisation malarkey

All gone quiet from Dalrymps - a good sign I hope

Oh, and if you do get contractions (even if irregular), keep upright and moving if at all possible.

Good luck!
