I took 1 pack, didn't realise my maternity ward had them (all brands) in stock for you to use for free. As I stayed in for 4 days they supplied all I needed

@ChunkyButFunky87 wow really what hospital did you go to? I got told that I need to bring my own

I'd take one pack and have another in the car.

Hospitals do have formula, but really it's there for emergencies / expected breastfeeding not working.

If you know from the off that you'll formula feed you should provide your own.

I had a c section three weeks ago and my hospital also told me to take my own formula.

I took the Aptamil equivalent of what you describe and I used 12 in around 24 hours. Once they are open you can only use them for 1 hour before you have to throw them away. I found that my DD wanted to take really small amounts every couple of hours which meant every time she wanted a small feed I had to open a new bottle & teat.

Felt very wasteful at the time but not sure there is an alternative as my hospital didn’t have facilities to sterilise or make up formula feeds any other way. I also wasn’t very mobile initially so walking to a kitchen etc wouldn’t have been very practical.

Well a baby is only likely to drink about 30ml a feed but once the bottle is open it is only good for an hour then must be thrown away so each pack is 6 feeds. Babies feed anything from 2 hourly to 5 hours, but if your baby is being monitored it is likely they will want you to feed every 3 hrs. I would take 2 packs providing someone can bring you more if you need them. All hospitals will have bottles but not many give them out freely. Good luck with the baby.

All hospitals should have facilities to sterilise equipment and the larger bottles of formula can be stored for 24hrs as you don't feed directly from the bottle, but the small ones are by far the most convenient, wasteful but convenient.

I d take 2 packs at least, my son was in NICU so they provided his milk then but we were on the ward together for 3 days after that and I needed 3 packs in that time.

@Coffeeandcrumpet my hospital had closed their shared kitchen due to covid, so the only cleaning or sterlising possible was when mums needed to use pumps for breastfeeding which the staff arranged.

fastandthecurious · 24/11/2020 21:36

I was in for 4 days after a c-section with DS. Think I used 4 packs and I was breastfeeding (in a fashion) for the first day. So technically I used 4 packs in 3 days. They gave me a bottle of formula as I stopped breastfeeding in the middle of the night and hadn't brought any formula.

I gave birth at 09:42 and was out about 8pm that night, baby only had 2. He didnt drink much of those either, he wasnt really interested in food that much, just sleepy from the birth. My hospital supplies them
