Membrane sweep - will it have an impact on the third stage?

I was told that if I have any kind of intervention that it is better not to have a natural third stage. Does a membrane sweep count as an intervention? Is it safe to go for a natural third stage if you have had a sweep?

I have always taken it to mean any chemical intervention because it could muck up the hormones you need to expel the placenta effectively. I could well be wrong though so hope someone's along to advise soon

I don't think it counts as intervention.

I had a natural third stage for DS3 and it was brilliant (had managed third stage with DS2 which ended with horrid manual removal of placenta, yuk).

nope not in may case

Stefka · 16/10/2007 12:46

Thanks - I think I will be offered a sweep today. If I manage a natural birth I would like a natural third stage.

it is any sort of chemical intervention

i.e pain relief like diamorphine , pethidine, epidural and intervention like a synto drip to speed up labour

a non medicated, natural , spontaneous labour is the best one for a physiological 3rd stage

if do opt for chemical pain releif, you can still request for the cord not to be clamped and cut until it has stopped pulsating so baby gets every last bit of nutrient rich blood

Stefka · 16/10/2007 16:12

Oh thank you! I didn't know that - I really wanted to wait for the cord to be clamped. I didn't know I could still do that even if I end up with some kind of intervention. Thank you for telling me about that

obviously, as long as there is no immediate need to cut the cord.. but hopefully there shouldn;t be

did you have a sweep?

I did. I really didn't find it that bad. Undignified certainly and a bit uncomfortable but not really sore or anything.

She said I was 2cm dilated so it is nice to now that something is happening down there! I've been getting lots of cramps, especially at night so it is good to know that they are doing something!

She booked me for an induction next week so I am keeping everything crossed that something happens before then.

Stefka · 16/10/2007 16:20

I haven't tried the nipple thing - how much twiddling do you have to do?
