HELP - First baby and 14 days overdue!

This is my first post, hope someone can give me some advice. I am 14 days overdue today. I went into hospital on Thursday and over the next 24 hours was given 3 doses of prostin to open my cervix. There was no progress so they sent me home yesterday for 24 hrs to see if nature would take its course. Still nothing has happened!. I have to go back to hospital today for a 4th dose, if nothing happens then I will be sectioned probably tomorrow.
Has anyone else gone through this. Should I just go for a section instead of taking the 4th dose of prostin. Desperate to see my baby now!!

Why are they going straight from prostin to section?

Have they suggested sytocynon (Sp?) drip?

Or alternatively, have you talked to them about active management? They can't force you to have a section and you can insist that they wait (although not sure if this is the case after they have administered prostin.

If you keep this bumped, there are some lovely doulas and midwives on here who will be along in due course with their sage advice.

Visualise things happening and try nipple stimulation and lots of sex. bounce on your birthing ball if you have one, or side step up and down stairs of not!

good luck, it gets a bit tedious at this stage, but it will happen soon enough

oh, and welcome to mumsnet

It's inadvisable to use syntocinon until the waters have gone - in an induction they would normally break the waters if contractions haven't started with the prostin pessary. However, if the pessaries haven't softened and started to dilate the cervix then they won't be able to break the waters. At this point you can either carry on waiting or go straight to caesarean.

How do you feel about it all? You sound keen to get it over with, but bear in mind that having a caesarean can have implications for future pregnancies and births.

How sure of your dates are you - do you think you're as much as 14 days past your due date or is it possible that you could have conceived later than you think? Things can change very quickly and you may go into labour today or the last dose of prostin may do the trick. You don't have to proceed with the induction or the caesarean and wait a bit longer to see if you go into labour naturally.

I'm sure Lulumama will be along to suggest some natural methods of induction, but you could try sex, nipple stimulation, walking (but don't tire yourself out!)

Hiya, I was 14 days overdue with my first and I had a sweep about 10 days overdue then went into hospital for the prostin (? I think it was) then I did start going into early labour, but had my waters broken for me and other help (sorry, I was too out of it to remember!). I am pretty sure I did have more drugs, but it all went along fine without a C-section. Hope it all goes well!

QuootieSpookypie · 14/10/2007 11:43

OK, ready daisys post - my labour did start (albeit slow!) so maybe thats why I had my waters broken.

Lulumama · 14/10/2007 12:40

what daisy said !

i would personally not go for c.s before anything else was tried to induce labour... having a c.s for first birth can have implications for future births,so best to try induction first

most hospitals tend to give prostin, then break waters, then synto drip if necc... then if that does not work, then a c.seciton

best advice i can give is lots of sex, nipple stim, and if you do want to try without a c.section, then you can ! if you do go into labour or induced labour, be as mobile and as active as you can !

good luck !

I was 14 days over due too. I had prostin too but nothing happened so the day after they broke my waters and labour pretty much went full on from there. I had everything; gas and air, pethedine and an epidural! I'm a wimp though!

ScaryFacedPumpkin · 14/10/2007 12:51

Sounds like your baby is like mine and doesn't want to leave it's mummys tummy!

minesalargeone · 14/10/2007 13:02

I went over with both my children - I didn't want to be induced with my second (I had 3 attempts at an induction with my first) so decided to buy the hottest curry from M&S, drank plenty of red wine to wash it down and it did the trick!

Klaw · 14/10/2007 14:13

Probably too late but look at these Natural Induction methods

I've done a lot of reading on Induction and if it was me I'd opt for Expectant Management and wait, everybody is different and gestate for different times. You could well be a Ten Month Mama! How long did your mum and maternal grandmother carry their babies for? Usually you'll find you're very similar.

However, you must listen to your instincts. If the hospital make any suggestions about what to do next please ask them to give you ALL the cons and pros so that you can make an informed decision.

Am thinking of you and sending gentle, effective labour vibes

Wisteria · 14/10/2007 14:18

My dd was 14 days late, bless her... I can totally sympathise with you, it's awful. I ran up and down the stairs, had a hot curry, tried everything (except castor oil - don't do that!), eventually it was a good old fashioned shag that made her vacate the premises!

Good luck!

LazyLinePUMPKINJane · 14/10/2007 14:20

Have you looked again at your dates and are you sure that they are correct? My boy was 9 days late but I was sure he wasn't actually late and when he arrived he didn't look late at all!

minesalargeone · 14/10/2007 14:26

a good old fashioned shag???!!! God that was the last thing I was gonna do - my bump was so huge my dh couldn't even get his arms round me!

Wisteria · 14/10/2007 14:53

from behind obviously unless your dh is particularly well endowed! Sounds awful but does tend to work!

minesalargeone · 14/10/2007 15:05

Yep I know 'from behind' would've been possible but by god it's not comfortable for the woman is it with a huge great lump of a bump sat in front of you and boobs hanging down past your armpits! Ooohh no, not for me again, EVER.

minesalargeone · 14/10/2007 15:07

Oh and he is quite well endowed in that department.....but since having two kids I've taken up reading and he likes the sports channels! Best form of contraception....subscribe to the sky sports channels...all of them!!!!

IamDaisy · 14/10/2007 22:39

overdue, i hope things are OK with you and that you have gone into spontaneous labour, and are happily cuddling a gorgeous bundle

mrsgonk · 15/10/2007 07:36

hallo there overdue

can sympathise with you, i am 10 days over with my second (was nine with my first so dont know whats going on there)

have just had a weekend without ds1 and indulged in a pineapple, curry, walking and sex -athon. all to no avail... am/was planning a home water birth which is looking less and less likely.

i guess we just have to accept that its out of our control and let fate take its course. unless anyone out there has any other tried and tested natural methods (not up for castor oil - could be a bit messy with a waterbirth?)

minesalargeone · 15/10/2007 11:53

I also ran up and down the stairs a few times - a moment of madness with no one looking and I'm sure that helped too......

Wisteria · 15/10/2007 13:04

overdue are you still with bump?? Hope all is well and you have gorgeous new munchkin x
