Queens Hospital Romford

Hi there, this is my first pregnancy. I’m 44 so it’s high risk for that and many more reasons. I have seen that I would be allocated to Queens in Romford as I live in Upminster. I’d really appreciate advice about whether to select this hospital or not or what your experiences were with the hospital. All advice welcome. Thanks.

I read all the ratings on surrounding hospitals and Queens was the only one whose maternity unit wasn’t ‘requires improvement. However, I had a horrible birth. They left a LARGE part of my placenta in and I was very unwell. My friend also had a bad experience a few weeks ago, so I wouldn’t have another baby here.

I'd choose elsewhere if I was you.

Wow. Okay thanks Ladies. I will investigate some more.

I had my baby 11 days ago at Queens (also had my first there 3 years ago).

I'm currently writing an email to the trust to highlight the care I received from everyone I came into contact with, they were all absolutely fantastic.

I felt so looked after during my induction, especially important as obviously my OH wasn't allowed to be there the whole time.
In the end my labour happened so quickly that he missed the actual birth, but the midwives (inc 2 students) were so fantastic. I felt so looked after.

The postnatal ward was also much better this time round, midwives, health care assistants and the volunteers were great and on hand when they were needed.

The only horrible aspect was the food.....but that's hospitals in general I think!

I totally agree that the midwives were lovely. The way they looked after me when I was taken back in I am so grateful for. I cannot fault them at all, amazing women x

Thank you both. Queens it is. 😉

Hi my little girl is five months old so I had her in the middle of the pandemic back in May at Queens. I didn’t have a great birth as had to be induced (due to gestational diabetes) then ended up in emergency csection due to baby’s heartrate dipping and placental abruption (!) but I have to say the staff were fantastic, I felt so well looked after, everything was explained to me, the consultant even came to the post natal ward after to check we were ok and to run through why they had to do what they did as he knew a lot of info was being thrown at me. Almost all of the Midwife’s on the antenatal ward and post natal ward were absolutely lovely and the ones that weren’t overly friendly were still pleasant enough. I was in there from the Wednesday to the Saturday and other than active labour had to be alone - couldn't even leave the ward (bloody covid) but if you are allowed to now, its a nice modern clean hospital with a nice Costa inside lol. Best advice I can give - be super friendly from the consultants to the midwives to the tea ladies and the cleaners and they’ll really look after you :-) best of luck! x i'm 40 so an older mum too x

Not taking away from the other ladies bad experiences, every lady and every birth is different, hopefully yours will go just fine xx

shartsi · 28/10/2020 10:02

It is very good. Well staffed. I had DC3 there and wish I had had all my other babies there before. Best birth experience and after care for me.

HighRiskFirst · 28/10/2020 10:38

Thanks NicNac, that's very comforting. I'll definitely take the advice! 😉 I have my first appointment in a few weeks so will take it slow and steady.....these first 3 months are definitely nerve wracking.....you just want to know that everything is ok and he/she is growing!

Thanks for sharing and congratulations on your little one. X

Shartsi, that's really good to know, especially as you have other hospitals to compare it too. Congratulations on your crew! Hoping for the same good experience. X

I had my baby here recently, i had one midwife and a trainee midwife who were great and looked after me well. The atmosphere in the birthing centre was really quite and calm, much different to a hectic, loud labour ward (where i had previous baby). The only issue i had here is i wasn’t being allowed to transfer to labour ward for pain relief (gas and air was making me sick so i couldn’t even use that). I wanted to be moved to labour ward to get an epidural but the midwife was constantly telling me i don’t need it and she will fill the birthing pool up for me instead, despite me saying again and again i would like to be moved to labour ward for an epidural that’s my decision. In the end she said she can’t move me because it means she will have to move downstairs aswell :s This did upset me so i would just recommend that if you go to the birthing centre with hopes of transferring to labour ward if it all gets too much, make that clear with them! Anyway i ended up giving birth an hour later (still in the birthing centre lol) and aftercare was great.

try and found somewhere better - far too, busy and not sufficient time and staff - very large catchment area - in view of your age you should get more care and extra care - try somewhere else
