I am booked for my first cs on 19th October (2nd baby) and of all of things to be anxious about I am worried about being on a ward full of women farting away!

I have read that the op causes a lot of trapped wind and that you can ease this by drinking peppermint tea and having an enema - how was it for you? Any useful suggestions?

Hi. Yes, I guess it does cause trapped wind in the same way any other abdominal surgery does although I have to say I was worse after a simple laparoscopy than my CS. You honestly won't notice the other women!! As for you, DO drink the peppermint tea, it does help. Also you won't be aware of it for a while because of the spinal. The other advice I can give is to get mobile as soon as you feel you can - this makes a huge difference in how you feel about yourself and believe it or not the pain but will also help you shift any trapped wind. Good luck!

I've had two sections and can't say I was particularly windy for either of them - maybe a little, for a day or so, but not much.

And quite honestly there are so many things going on afterwards that farting (yours or anyone elses) will be the least of your worries!

Like raspberry beret, I've had 2 c-sections and never noticed any wind after either of them.

I think everybody's body responds slightly differently.

ha! i am writing frommy hospital bed post-cs. i havehad awful wind, both trapped and escaping! i would recommend you take in pepperint, gripe water and colpermin tablets and taje them as a precaution because it can be quite painful againnst the scar.

good luck with the birth!

I had very painful wind after my first c-section - which wasn't relieved until a more experienced midwife came on and immediately gave me peppermint tea and suggested I stand in the shower with warm water running down my back and massage my sides. Worked a treat. Good luck with your delivery - and don't worry about the wind as it's soon gone!

and getting moving really helped as well - sort of shifts it all around a bit iyswim

I had trapped wind pain and took peppermint tea but it didn't cause noisy/smelly flatulence - don't forget you'll have fasted for some hours before your elective so not too much smelly stuff in your system.
Avoid lentils, beans or fruit and other insoluble fibre the night before as it will hang around. Stick to white rice or pasta and finely chopped/pureed veg so it gets digested quicker.
