I posted here at the weekend, that i was feeling rough, headache for days and pain in my tum on one side.
MW came out and checked and said she though feeling rough and headache was likely hormines and lack of sleep and the pain wasnt i my womb ( its well contracted) so not too worried.
However, last night when went to change pad, it had a terrible smell . I have had a peek and stitches look ok, not yucky or swollen. I tried to get a doc appointment but none left
Can this wait till tomorrow? do i need to worry? i rang mw again but shes in meeting and im wait for her to call back.

Sorry if tmi
oh and gave birth 11 days ago.

Poor you! I don't think you should wait. If you can't get an appointment today, go back to your labour ward.

Hope you feel better soon. And congratulations on your newborn .

Hi lisad123,

I remember your post.

Has the tenderness in the uterus really gone, or were you persuaded that because it was well contracted it shouln't be hurting?

How are the headaches and the temperature?

NineUnlikelyTales · 02/10/2007 12:29

This could be an EMERGENCY, seriously.

I had the same symptoms as you. The MW said I could have an infection in my uterus so she asked the doctor to visit me with a prescription for antibiotics the next day. In the night I started to get a temperature so at 6am my husband called the labour ward and they said to come straight in. By the time I got there I could no longer see or walk and I was very, very ill with a temperature of over 104. I had to spend another week in hospital and if I hadn't gone in when I did, I could have died. A mother died of the same thing a month before me in the same hospital, a MW told me.

Don't take a risk. Please get to the GP or get the MW to see you today. You shouldn't wait until tomorrow.

Peachy · 02/10/2007 12:34

nineunlikelytales is right, your GP shoudl see you as anmergency or you shuld call the MW / maternity ward.... either way do NOT ignore it!

lisad123 · 02/10/2007 15:12

my midwife rang back, and has arranged for me to see GP today at 5.45pm on an emerency appointment.
My temp isnt so bad although i still find it is worse at night , tenderness is still there and to answer your question NNT, midwife said the tenderness couldnt have anything to do with my womb as it wasnt where the womb was, it was at the side, said it was likely to be trapped wind

Headache still there, has never really gone away

Wish i had gone to GP sooner, then wouldnt have had to get to smelly lady point
Oh well hopefully sorted tonight, and thank god for mumsnet, so much more helpful than most people in RL.

NineUnlikelyTales, sorry to hear your story but glad your ok, will be sure to get it sorted, i promise.

Strikes me as a rather clever midwife lisad123!

Maybe I'm doing her a misjustice.

Offensive lochia in the puerperium is not something to be taken lightly, especially with elevated temp. and associated tenderness and general feeling of malaise.

And others may correct me but I have never known trapped wind!! to cause a spiking temperature, slightly elevated pulse associated with pain maybe.

Backs of because she doesn't want to scare lisad

Keep in touch lisad123 and I really hope all is well.

spugs · 02/10/2007 18:38

lisad123 I am glad you went to get checked out. I hope you can come home like you want and whatever happens, you will make a quick recovery once the AB kick in. I felt loads better even after the first dose.

Take care

Klaw · 02/10/2007 20:59

Lisa, sorry to have missed you, didn't turn on computer till this eve...

This really needs looked into NOW and I'm glad that you are going in to get professional help. I hope that you tell them you are BF and that they must support you to continue with it. Once you get home contact NCT bf help line or BF Awareness and tell them of the regime you've been given and ask for their advice or opinions. They will support you to get through this infection and carry on BF.

I don't CARE if this all turns out to be a mountain rather than a molehill, you can never be too careful when it comes to your's and baby's health, and it is much easier to get over a mild infection than it is to get over one that's been allowed to fester!

Take care my sweet, I'm thinking of you!

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 03/10/2007 10:35

Glad you're getting some help Lisa- be well X

lisad123 · 03/10/2007 11:44

grrr the nhs suck!!
I got to A&E gave them letter GP sent with me, i spent an hour waiting in a&e because someone needed to escort us there. Got to ward about 8.30pm, waited, and waited. Finally saw doc at 2.30am!!!
It was a doc i had seen though my pregnancy, she is very nice, confirmed it is likely i have womb infection. Took bloods and swab.

She said i could go home and someone would ring me this morning with my results and let me know if infection levels are high enough to need IV or we can try something else. She promised me they would call by about 10am, well you can guess, no call
I have rang ward and they said, i doubt your results will be in yet , but they will call me back I know the blood tests were written on a request form that had stat written on them, sure she said the take just a few hours.
Im just soo tired and feeling so rough, want it sorted.

i will let you know if they call back, and what happpens. Thanks for the advice.

lisad123 that is terrible I hope you get a call soon, if not ring them again. I can't believe how you have been treated (or not treated).

lisad123 · 03/10/2007 16:56

grrr im so upset im in tears

The doc rang at 12.40 and told me he would leave me a prescribtion on the ward. I had to remind him im breast feeding.
I picked up and took to chemist, asked her to double check it ok when BF, hmmm big book say to use with cauious in BF mothers as it does go into breast milk she even asked if i can go onot bottle feeding . Checked online and it say your doc may advise you to stop BF while on drug I rang mw and she said to take drugs and hope LO is ok and keep a close eye on her. Im so upset, i had to stop BF DD1 at 4 weeks as she got sick when they changed my drugs. Really tempted not to take them and go and see GP again tomorrow, but then i would have had this infection for another 2days without treatment. As medical proffessionals you would think they would know how important BFing is

ConnorTraceptive · 03/10/2007 16:59

Oh poor you. I had to stop breast feeding at 8 weeks to take antibiotics so I know how much you don't want to.

TBH an infection sounds dangerous so I think you should take them and then contact the doctor tomorrow for further advice.

NineUnlikelyTales · 03/10/2007 17:37

lisad123 I would ring one of the BF helplines as a matter of urgency to get advice on this. If you can't get through then CAT me and I will give you the number of a LLL leader (BF counsellor) who I know would be happy to advise you tonight.

Actually don't CAT me as it might take too long. Email me on e1375 underscore a at hotmail.com if you need to.

NoviceKnitter · 03/10/2007 18:17

I've only just seen this but wanted to recommend the Breastfeeding Network as they have a pharmacist they work with who can give sympathetic expert advice re breastfeeding and drugs. many drugs are labelled unsuitable for breastfeeding to cover drug cos backs but are actually fine. I tried a couple of the helplines when faced with a similar dilema and the BFN seemed the best equipped to deal with drug dilemma probs.

Having said all that it sounds like it could be very serious if you don't take the drugs so if you can speak to an emergency doctor tonight to establish risk to LO that would help.

NoviceKnitter · 03/10/2007 18:36

ps just wanted to add that I am having to take long term a drug that is not recommended for use in bfing (and I am bfing.) like you I was very upset when told I needed to take it. did lots of research and discovered that lots of drugs are actually fine, it's just htat they don't have hte data required to print that on the packet. Bottom line is if they were genuinely concerned about affect on LO they would not hesitate in telling you to FF for duration of treatment. After faffing around (and putting my health at risk) Ihave now been on my drug for three weeks and absolutely no ill effects on LO. Obviously yours is a different drug and you must get all the facts but just wanted to share my story and wish you luck - speak to breastfeeding network and to your doctor and ask them to spell out what risk if any there is to your LO if the drug gets into the milk. Also remember the bottom line is LO needs you more than your milk - but I don't think it will come to that. Good luck, i know how hard it is but you'll be ok.

lisad123 · 03/10/2007 20:29

hello all, thanks for all the support.
I have spoken to the doctor tonight, and he was very helpful.
He explained that he had spent an hour with the mircobiologist trying to find the right drugs, and this was the best answer. He exlained that the amount of drugs that will go inot the milk is mininum. He explained that he would have no idea of how badly it will effect LO.
He said i could wait till my results are back on friday morning and then get the best AB for the results. He also said it could be my body is able to manage the infection alone, as i have had it since friday.
he did advice to take them, especially if i get any worse, but said i had to make the decision on the info i have and how im feeling.
Thanks will ring BF line too.
Thanks

Lisa

Thinking of you Lisa, I had to take ABs for infection and haemotoma in my farking episiotemy. The first lot they gave me a low dose cos it affects bm... you guessed it, didn't kill infection, baby got spots on top of spots all over her face (was gutted). Complained about the infection, re swabbed and given a different set of ABs which eventually worked...

Continued to BF the whole time.

You can check any drug through Safe Fetus website and this site.

Remember, as has been mentioned here, that many drugs are not 'classed' as safe because it's unethical to do randomised controlled trials BUT history can be shown to indicate that a drug has no major side effects as none have come up as being problems for the decades they've been available. DYSWIM?

EG: I am happier with Sertraline as an antidepressant over Fluoxetine, having checked out the info.

Don't worry too much but stand up for yourself and your right to BF. Stay strong!
