Oxford John Radcliffe - mode of birth clinic

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has recently been through the mode of birth clinic?

What's it like? What do they ask? What do they take into account?

I had a traumatic delivery with my first (forceps+episiotomy+3b tear+scarring to the baby's face). Would like an ELCS for my second due December.

I had a consultant appointment recently and was basically told no maternal request c- sections. Despite everything I sent through the first time round.

Just wondering if anyone had any experience of this?

Thanks xxx

They don't do maternal request CS there, it's true. But with a previous 3b tear you have a medical reason for an ELCS, so be polite but firm and hopefully you'll get it - if not could you ask to be referred elsewhere?

There are some hoops to jump through, but the NICE guidelines definitely recommend offering a CS at maternal request. More info here: www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg132/chapter/1-Guidance#factors-affecting-likelihood-of-cs-during-intrapartum-care

That's completely aside from the fact that I would have thought a 3b tear and previous traumatic delivery would be sufficient. So angry on your behalf!

John Radcliffe are known for no maternal request ELCS- it's disgusting imo. You have a physical medical reason anyway. For all the bleating on about how much better we are these days at recognising mental health as a medical problem, it's funny how that doesn't extend to pregnant women Hmm

You could try looking here:

https://www.birthrights.org.uk/campaigns-research/maternal-request-caesarean/

They have an interactive map which shows hospitals stances on maternal request ELCS. I would look for the nearest hospital to you that supports ELCS. I had my second baby at the GWH in Swindon 5 years ago- my second maternal request ELCS. They were supportive at the time- having seen a case like me I'm disgusted they would change this.

Hi, I know your post was last year now I was just wondering how it turned out for you if you don't mind sharing?

I had my little boy last year Jan 2020 at the JR and had a forcep delivery, severely haemorrhaged and was overall very traumatic. I'm due our second child in November of this year and my midwife has advised I can request a c section due to having a medical reason, being my blood loss.

I have a mode of birth clinic in September and was wondering how best to prepare? I want to make sure I'm confident and firm with my wishes.

Thank you so much I hope everything is going well for you!

I have not had a c section but I have had 5 babies at the JR. I heard on the Oxfordshire maternity voice partnership that, finally, Oxfordshire are allowing maternal choice c sections.

I hope that makes it even easier for you on medical grounds.
