Private ELCS

This is a way off yet but it plays on my mind a lot and I’d like to make some progress with my own thoughts!!

I had my first baby in lockdown. Vaginal delivery with back to back baby, 3rd degree tear and huge blood loss. Very ill afterward and back in hospital a week after delivery.

Throughout pregnancy I was passed from community midwife to community midwife - first one didn’t believe my dates were correct and called me in for my booking in too soon, then said well it won’t be me you’re with and so I met the next midwife at a follow up appointment. Met with her and on the second appointment she said she was leaving so passed me on to someone else - she was nice enough but at times quite dismissive of my worries and I think in hindsight o should have pushed harder for things I wanted or needed to understand and have reassurance on both pre and post birth.
Despite the physical trauma of my delivery the care I received was excellent. Midwives, doctors, etc all wonderful. But I feel my care overall from booking in to post natal was a mixed bag and due to the physical implications of my vaginal delivery I’ve been told an elcs is recommended if I have more children.

Id rather do it vaginally again but know deep down it is safer and so I’ll end up with an elcs.
We aren’t rich but with a bit of planning could ace for private maternity care and I think my husband would support my request for this. I think it would provide me with better continuity of care, less rushed appointments and more focus on my specific concerns and needs.
But I don’t know where my nearest private maternity hospital is - I’ve tried google and it’s as clear as mud! I gave birth at Warwick hospital and I’ve read you can just have a private mw who then comes with you but I might not get a private room for recovery etc.

Has anyone got experience of private maternity services (ideally for an elcs and in midlands / Warwickshire if possible!) that they could share pros and cons of with me please?

Hi there, this guy is amazing.

www.mums.me.uk/

I couldn’t quite afford a fully private CS, sadly so didn’t go with them in the end (I’ve had two before) so I’m having my op on the nhs but I have a private midwife who has been excellent and will accompany for my section next month. It’s not perfect - I’m not happy at all with the car at the hopital and would rather be private. But it’s better than nothing. Ok me if you want more information on the company I used.

A private midwife would help you with your case for a CS if that’s what you want.

I'm not sure about in the Warwickshire area but I do know a good private obstetrician in London who works with private midwives too - Mr Kumar Kunde. There's an idea of fees on his website (www.londonpregnancycare.com) which might give you a starting point for planning - Good luck!

When I looked for a private C section pre DC2 there weren''t any available outside of London. I do now believe that you can have them at a private hospital in Manchester, but that is about it. You cannot have private C sections at NHS hospitals.

You basically can't get private c sections outside of London.

maxdash · 21/07/2020 13:04

Ooh but it looks like they've started doing them in the Midlands!

You can!

It just takes a bit of looking at first. You need to speak to a private obstetrician in your town/city.

Mike Wilde (mums clinic in Solihull that I linked to) has been practicing in the area for years. He’s a world renowned Fetal medicine expert. I can’t recommend him enough. Sadly he’s not doing my section as I’m having that on the nhs - I couldn’t quite. Stretch to all private care - but I’m having other care with him and his team and they are amazing g.

@maxdash most ‘private’ sections are carried out in NHS hospitals. They usually have a private wing to stay in afterwards - there are very few actual private maternity hospitals.

The Private obstetrician will take in their own team to the nhs hospital and will book you a private room afterwards and provide aftercare while you are there. The people I’ve mentioned above use the facilities of Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham for the section and stay after but have their own premises for all scans and appointments.

This is brilliant - thank you so much for the recommendations

I don’t need someone making the case for an elcs - thanks to DD ripping my nether regions to shreds on her way out in a candidate for it on the nhs anyway - doctors have already said to me subsequent deliveries are recommended as CS!

It would be a lot cheaper to book yourself some private maternity care/scans but have the ELCS on the nhs as it’s being recommended anyway.
