If you were induced...

... Were your waters broken or did they go naturally?
If they weren't broken what happened?

Just wondering how typical my experience was and what others mums' experiences were like.
Thanks

Very unusual. I would definitely request a debrief(?) so understand why certain choices were madr

Orangesandlemons82 · 08/07/2020 18:01

I had the pessaries and my waters broke on their own a few hours later.

Natalie654321 · 08/07/2020 19:35

Artificially broke after I started bleeding when the balloon was inserted. Ended up having an emergency c section :(

OP:

Get a birth debrief

and I’ll say it again

Get a birth debrief

Write to the Supervisor of Midwives at the trust you gave birth at - you can find this on Google by (for instance)

“supervisor of midwives + Kingston Hospital”

you’ll get a hit and potentially an email.

I had to do this after a tricky time with my second delivery and it really explained things in a way nobody had time for and actually allowed me to decide on a VBAC for my third and have it approved by my consultant.

Anyway, get a birth debrief! And I’m sorry you had such a tricky time first time x

Pretty sure mine broke on the loo but it was a very very very quick labour once it got going so no-one is sure. I’m sure I felt a gush but it wasn’t loads of water :-/

Phthalo · 08/07/2020 19:54

Oh just read your latest update - your labour sounds terrible. I had an ELCS second time around and I’m sure after that experience you would be given a c section no problem! Good luck

Bettercallgall · 08/07/2020 19:58

I have had three children two were induced and one natural but all of them had to have their waters broken by the nurse.

randomsabreuse · 08/07/2020 20:12

Mine went on their own after a 2nd dose of gel stuff. There was a long "queue" to have them broken based on need/monitoring results, other arrivals actually in labour so not inductions, people brought in from MLU because meconium etc. so I can see how you could keep getting bumped down the list. I definitely jumped a lot of the queue when I was found to be 7+ cm, got taken to delivery and waters went pretty well straight away after that.

I would imagine either staffing numbers or possibly delivery room numbers were the limiting factor - so a debrief might help clarify what happened, and might help justify more funding for staff...

I wouldn't assume it was just the induction/delay in breaking waters that was the issue - natural early labour can still take that long, and there is no hurry if waters haven't broken yet. My 2nd (induced) labour was very similar to my first (spontaneous) - and despite being much better at being active/upright for my 2nd I still needed a ventouse for both.

I had 2 pessarys 6 hours apart which got me to 3cm with no regular pains. I had ARM where the midwife broke my waters and my daughter was born within 2 hours. As soon as I stood up after my waters broke all hell broke loose it all happened so quickly.

DuggeeHugs · 09/07/2020 09:22

Mine didn't break and, by the time they thought they could try (2am on day 5 of the induction), they found I wasn't actually dilated at all. I refused to consent to any further interventions and had a lovely EMCS instead.

Get a birth debrief and go through their decisions - I didn't know that was possible at the time and didn't get one, I think it would've given me some peace if I had. A debrief will hopefully put you in a more confident position with your second birth. Inductions aren't usually recommended when you've had a CS first time around, so might be worth discussing your options and looking up your benefits/risks of a VBAC vs. ELCS this time around.

First time I went into labour just from the pessary so it wasn't needed. They broke by themselves when I was pushing and drenched the midwife.

Second time I had them artificially ruptured. At most hospitals they will only do this on the delivery suite, or at least once a room on DS is available, so this can lead to a lot of hanging around, though 3 days does sound unacceptably long. My second induction was a bit more faffy - I started contracting quite fast after the pessary so they moved me to Delivery Suite, but then they gave me an injection to slow the contractions which wiped them out almost completely and as I hadn't made any progress they sent me back to antenatal ward overnight then brought me back to DS late the following morning for my ARM and then starting the drip a few hours later. DS2 was born just before 7pm.

Definitely recommend getting a debrief and discussing your concerns at the "mode of birth"/VBAC clinic or whatever your hospital calls it, before you make a final decision.

My induction took about 3 days and I only got to 3 cm. They broke my waters and still nothing. The pessary insertion in the beginning was the worst part. I felt every bit of it. My body was nowhere near ready and I did have issues with consultants then and throughout my pregnancy. My care wasn’t great tbh so ended up reporting them. I was coerced into the induction and just as I thought, it hadn’t even been necessary and the hospital couldn’t explain why it was done after looking through my records. By doing so, they had put us both at a much higher risk of interventions and emcs which happened.

They did say that I would never ever have to have an induction again nor was I ever going to after that anyway.

I went for a vbac and it was way better and relaxed than the first time around. I also had a doula which helped. I chose not to do an elcs because I had a toddler at home and a husband who was gone most of the day at work and traveled with no local family support so the thought of trying to heal again after another c-section was off-putting.

mammylynch · 09/07/2020 20:04

I had my waters broken at 2cm, active labour started within 30 mins and then I was put on the drip.

londongirl12 · 09/07/2020 20:11

Went 2 weeks over due. No feelings of labour at all!! Had induction by having waters broken by midwife. Contractions started about 20 mins later, hard and fast!!!

Ouchjuststoodonlego · 10/07/2020 21:03

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. I think that you are right and that a debrief is a good idea. I thought that I was past it but the closer to this one being due the more anxious I am.
I already have a phone appointment to talk about the possibility of an elcs booked for September.
I wonder whether I can have the debrief then or whether it needs to be a separate appointment. I don't want to waste anyone's time.
