Hi there, not sure if any of you are from North Wales or know where I can find info on these two hospitals maternity wards / mom's experiences. I need to choose where I want to have my baby and I don't know anything about either hospital 🤷🏻‍♀️ if any of you have had your babies at either hospital recently-is would you let me know what your experience was like?

Not recently. 9 and 6 years ago, but I'm pregnant again and planning on going to GC again.
I'm not welsh speaking and my experiences of Gwynedd have always been a bit negative because of this.
I have had no issues with GC. I have a lot of friends than have birthed there too, some needing emergency sections and some who have needed the NICU and it's all been positive.

I know of a few wards that have been updated but I have no idea if maternity has to be honest. There were birth pools in both birthing rooms I was in previously. DS2 I was kept in for 10 days and I had no complaints (apart from being desperate for good food). I don't know if this helps you, but good luck x

''I'm not welsh speaking and my experiences of Gwynedd have always been a bit negative because of this.''

To my ear, this sounds like someone saying -

''I'm not Spanish speaking and my experiences of Andalusia have always been a bit negative because of this.''

I'm welsh but not fluent.
I assume you haven't experienced what it can be like in north wales in some areas if you're not a fluent speaker...

I found my experiences in the hospital to be negative because of this which is my experience and what the OP asked for, hopefully it doesn't happen to everyone.

Perhaps if I were to give birth in Spain and didn't understand them there and they seemed annoyed at the fact I didn't I would have also felt vulnerable and found this to be negative too.

I had my little one in Glan Clwyd in April. What kind of thing do you want to know?

Pops0308 · 15/07/2020 21:18

Hmmmm EVERYTHING please ( about the hospital) 😁 most of all how did you find the hospital and staff...

I was on the midwife led unit, which has 2 rooms and 1 pool. I did see the consultant led unit on my tour, there's a few rooms and a pool, plus the operating theatre. The two units are right next to each other, so if you needed to transfer it would be really quick.

I didn't have the option to use the pool because of the C19 restrictions, don't know if that's changed now.

MLU was great, the room had a bed, sofa and a beanbag so there's a choice of where you want to be. All the medical stuff is hidden behind sliding panels, including the g&a. G&a is via a mask (apparently in YG it's via a mouthpiece).

The staff on the MLU were great, really looked after us. We had to transfer over to the consultant unit afterwards for my stitches, again the staff were good.

The postnatal ward was okay, I wasn't there for long as they were trying to get everyone home asap. No visitors allowed.

Anything else you'd like to know? :)

@papillion2 Just reading your post about glan clwyd, I'm giving birth there this month and just wondered if you could help with the following:

Did they have a birthing ball in the rooms?
Do you have your own toilet attached to the rooms?
Do you need to bring your own formula and bottles if not breastfeeding?
Are your partners allowed in the whole time?

Sorry about all the questions but can't find much information about YGC anyway else.

Thanks Smile

Hi @Evangla

I don't remember a ball in the room I was in, but I did see some when we did our tour so I'm sure they'd be able to get one for you if you ask.

The toilet on the MLU is a separate room, not sure about the consultant led side.

The mums using formula asked each time they needed a bottle, and were brought one. Think they have a variety of makes, so just a matter of letting the staff know which one you want.

Back in April, birth partners were only allowed once you were in established labour, and they could stay until you were moved to the ward. Partners weren't allowed on the ward at all.

I did find these links about services:

General info on maternity services at YCG/YG
bcuhb.nhs.wales/health-services/health-services1/services1/services/maternity/

Update on services during Covid (scroll down for maternity)
bcuhb.nhs.wales/covid-19/services-update/

Don't feel bad for asking, I had the same problem finding any info on YGC, so am more than happy if I can help others Smile

Keep asking if there's anything else you want to know.
