Food for bringing new baby home

I’m currently 35 weeks... can’t use my brain and would appreciate your thoughts on food to have in the house when you come home from hospital.
Things that are either easy to prepare, grab and eat, or prepare and store in advance,
Thanks

We froze loads of portions of pre cooked veg lasagne, pasta dishes, chilli.. things that just needed salad/rice accompaniments that didn’t take too long. Also had potatoes in for jacket potatoes.
The freezer dinners lasted three weeks it was brilliant!

Blondebear123 · 19/06/2020 20:28

Biscuits, chocolate, coffee....

OpposableThumbs2 · 19/06/2020 20:33

Anything you can eat with one hand.
And flapjack.

Nix2020 · 19/06/2020 20:35

Pate. You've gone too long without it.

OhioOhioOhio · 19/06/2020 20:36

Make yourself a packed lunch in the morning.

Babypug · 19/06/2020 20:37

Anything you want

Unescorted · 19/06/2020 20:38

OpposableThumbs2 yes to one handed meals.

MindatWork · 19/06/2020 20:39

Lots and lots of snacks for night feeds (particularly if you’re planning to breastfeed). One of my fondest memories of DD’s first few weeks was wolfing down a wedge of Victoria sponge at 2am in the morning...never been as ravenous in my life as when I was breastfeeding

MsChatterbox · 19/06/2020 20:40

I'm having a c section for second baby on Monday and have just done my meal plan for this week... As you can see not much prep at all! (I never use any ready meals or pre prepared veg usually). As well as this I've got a lot of treats in and also lots of fruit - really craved fruit last time. Also got lots of different types of juice in. Basically sugar!

I never gave this a moment's thought as I left it all to dh.

But one-handed is a good tip.

TwigTheWonderKid · 19/06/2020 20:43

An enormous platter of parma ham, camembrt, brie, oysters and ALL THE BISCUITS.

Pipandmum · 19/06/2020 20:43

Uh I guess you can batch cook and freeze stuff. But to be honest I never found myself short of time. Instead of flowers or baby gift or what have you could ask your friends to bring around a meal.

Lockdownseperation · 19/06/2020 20:43

Also look for foods high in iron and fibre. You will probably need them both.

Soph88888 · 19/06/2020 20:44

Thanks all. DH might try his best but i don’t think he would even know how much milk I like in my cereal... so going to do a mega shop and spend a few days cooking to get stuff in the freezer

Last time I was really efficient and had a freezer full of meals. This time I'm just going to get some ready meals in. DH will sort his own food out when he gets in late in the evening but I eat earlier with toddler DS.
Frozen veg is really useful especially chopped onions and peppers.
If the day is going to plan I will cook something like a pasta bake in the morning and just reheat in the evening, if it isn't it'll probably be fish fingers or a sandwich.
A list of quick options is a good idea e.g different things on toast, cheese and onion pasty, good quality burger in a bun, salad on the side.

loutypips · 19/06/2020 20:45

Stock up on ready meals! Or batch cook stuff that you can freeze and reheat.

Quackersandcheese3 · 19/06/2020 20:46

Stuff you can eat with one hand ! We froze soup, casserole, lasagna, fish pie, pasta sauces etc.

Etinox · 19/06/2020 20:48

Lots and lots and lots of fruit.
Is it your first baby? I didn’t know why my midwife kept asking if I’d poo’ed until I did and honestly it was more painful than the birth.

60sPony · 19/06/2020 20:49

Cook food.net do lovely home homecooked frozen meals...

weepingwillow22 · 19/06/2020 20:51

I ate lots of nuts to keep my energy up. Charlie Binghams ready meals were also handy.

2007Millie · 19/06/2020 20:51

We started HelloFresh when we had DS and it was amazing. No thinking required and delivered easily

BreatheAndFocus · 19/06/2020 20:53

Lots of snacks if you’re breastfeeding! I liked posh flapjacks, but any old cake bar or yummy biscuits will do. I also got in some juice cartons for a quick hydrate and shot of fruitiness.

For meals - if you’re up for it, cook lasagne, mince/veggie alternative in tomato sauce which you bag per meal then add whatever seasonings you want eg chilli to make it into a..er...chilli 😃 Make a fish pie and freeze, make casseroles and freeze. Frozen veg, plenty of cereal, jars to tart up quick meals eg some of those pesto type sauces.

I also bought some Complan to make a quick vitamin-filled drink for days when I just felt lacking.

20viona · 19/06/2020 20:53

I didn't make any freezer meals and didn't need to. I cooked as normal and had the odd takeaway. Life wasnt much different one of us looked after the baby and the other did normal Household jobs.

MsSquiz · 19/06/2020 21:00

We froze some bolognese & savoury mince but they're still in the freezer and DD is 6 months!

We just made less time consuming meals that didn't take load of prep, or things like a casserole that were slow cooked.
We also had a few pies/ready meals that DH would pick up on his way home from work alongside the occasional takeaway

Just make sure you have lots of tasty snack and lunch options that are quick to put together or heat and heat

Mulhollandmagoo · 19/06/2020 21:12

Batch cook and get your freezer nice and stocked up, get some of those bags of frozen veggies you can just bung in the microwave, but most importantly snacks! Biscuits, choccie bars, crisps the works! Chocolate digestives got me through the night feeds
