Tips for healing episiotomy

Hi,

I'm just after recommendations for healing an episiotomy, just gave birth this morning and the soreness is starting to kick in. Hoping to be discharged tomorrow so just wondering what I can do to relieve any pain and heal it quicker. Currently got a catheter in too so no idea what weeing will be like.

Thanks in advance Smile x

Congratulations! I've had two episiotimies. First one wasn't too bad, second one was very painful for a week or so (there was a haematoma). My advice would be take paracetamol and ibuprofen regularly (make sure plenty in the house!) and use ice packs as much as possible (I had 3 on rotation!).

Just remembering - it definitely was cool milk mixed with lavender and camomile essential oils. Really lovely on cotton wool or sanitary pad against the area. The midwife who told me about this was so lovely, so kind. I was really touched when she brought this all to me in hospital to use.

I was going to say valley cushion but pp's have beat me to it!

You can borrow from some local NCT groups or hire directly from the company. I hired one for 3 weeks because I literally could not sit down.

Oh I didn't know that about the rubber ring!

Congratulations @Hodge85!

I had a third degree tear after my little boy 10 weeks ago.

A bath is good but be careful about how many a day as you don’t want an infection. I got an infection in mine despite best efforts not to sometimes it just happens. Midwife said gentle showers better as not sitting in ‘dirty’ water so maybe bath once a day and shower once a day?

Lay in bed and get as much air to your bits as you can. Use a puppy pad under your bum whilst you do this.

I used spritz for bitz but couldn’t get on with it but know some proper rave about it. Boots also do a version of it.

Sit with feet up or lay on sofa take pressure off. Don’t use a ring cushion.

Very very steady walks at first if at all. REST REST and more rest!!

My biggest piece of advice would be keep on top of medications especially pain relief even if feeling ok. Paracetamol and irbuprofen 4 hourly. Lactolose to keep you soft when you need a poo. Vitamin c to help the healing process.

Raise your feet on a little stool when going to the toilet so your knees are slightly higher than your hips. Use a clean dry pad to hold your stitches when you poo. Will make you feel much safer. DO NOT STRAIN. Take a book or phone whatever and be prepared to wait and let it come naturally. If it doesn’t try again later Breath out when passing the poo to stop any straining. That first time is horrendous but it does get better. Again lactolose is your friend. Morning and night.

Use a sports bottle or small jug to pour Lukewarm water on your stitches when you pee.

There was a time about 2 weeks post partum that I sobbed it would never get better. It does. It totally does. It just takes time.

A perfect excuse to stay on the sofa and cuddle your beautiful baby.

Oh I also moved to reusable pads once the bleeding had died down a little. Much much softer on the stitches. Got a set from amazon

HighOnStilts · 20/06/2020 00:19

I used Spritz for bits - The expert midwife.. I highly recommend!

Mumofagirl · 21/06/2020 22:22

I also recommend Spritz for Bits for about 2-3 weeks to help with the healing. Initially I was too scared to spray onto my stitches (second degree tear and an episiotomy) and so sprayed onto a boots maternity pad.

jollybobs89 · 21/06/2020 22:38

Salt baths lavender baths
Then dry your bits with the hair dryer on cool mode haha

Oh and don't looks with a mirror haha

jollybobs89 · 21/06/2020 22:40

Oh and don't overdo it! I went for walks up cleaning after 5 days and the longer I was on my feet the more pain I was in as it was the pressure etc so even if you feel up to it make sure you take it easy for as long as you can xxx

peanutbutterandbananas · 21/06/2020 22:41

All of the advice so far worked with both of mine! Also try to eat really well - lots of vitamin c helps heal wounds, try make your diet as nutritious as you can. It took about 2 weeks for me. And... Congratulations! XSmile

Lemonysherbet · 21/06/2020 22:42

So mine got infected... Ive since learnt to use a hairdryer on a cool setting post shower/ bath to dry the stitches is amazing!

Also don't overdo it. And listen to your body. Congratulations on your baby :) xx

2littleboyzmum · 21/06/2020 22:46

Do not I repeat do not walk on laminate flooring without shoes whilst healing. Socks and laminate no matter how careful you are makes you slip, I ripped a hole in the stitches by almost doing the splits within the first three weeks 😭🤦🏼‍♀️😂 it makes me cringe every time I think about it

Xjo1992x · 22/06/2020 20:00

Bath every morning, just needs to be deep enough to soak it. Use sea salt in the water.

Then about 3 times a day just rinse it with the shower head, especially after having a poo.

Try to sit more on your side than on your bum, and don't use a ring, they just make things worse

MrsCl19 · 23/06/2020 06:01

Make sure you are stocked up on paracetamol and ibuprofen and take every 4 hours as advised. It will help with the pain!

Flamingolingo · 23/06/2020 06:31

The baths and the frequent pain relief are what’s needed. I had a horrible horrible episiotomy (and forceps delivery) in 2014. The wound was a mess initially, and I was sewn too tight (caused problems with sex but has since resolved following another baby). I made any midwife who came anywhere near me look at the stitches because they were so sore (including a neighbour who did my postnatal home visit). They did heal, but it took time. I went to the GP about a separate issue about 6 months post delivery, she had to examine me for some reason and her comment was that she could barely see the episiotomy and she would be telling all her postnatal women how ‘beautifully’ it had healed.
