Delivering your placenta

thattravelphotographer · 18/06/2020 21:40

I'm a FTM and so I have no idea which option for delivering my placenta I want!

Everything I have read either gives a very clinical description or is too brief for me to be able to make a decision from, so I'm keen to find out what other mums what you did/would suggest: wait to naturally deliver your placenta, or opt for the injection for a quicker delivery?

Thank you!

I was very keen to deliver mine naturally, following a home birth. I had read that the injection can cause vomiting, and as I'm phobic about vomiting, I had 'absolutely not' written on my birth plan. The same goes for all pain relief, as it all has potential side effects which include vomiting.

In the event, it was an emergency hospital birth, with every intervention on the planet including the placenta injection. Mine came out in bits, and part of the post-birth surgical reconstruction included making sure there weren't any bits left in situ.

I wasn't sick, though.

I say this just as another way to say that you should plan the birth you really want, but be prepared for it not to be quite the way you hope!

Injection, I have delivered 7 placentas never vomited.

Catastrofuck · 18/06/2020 21:50

I didn’t have a clue which way to go first time round, but in the event even after a straightforward vaginal delivery with no complications I was too tired for a natural third stage and I’d had enough and wanted to concentrate on my baby. It was fine, no complications there either. Second time I went straight for injection again

Had injection both times. No complications or side effects, had no wish to continue the process longer than necessary 😂

MrsApplepants · 18/06/2020 21:55

Injection, wanted to get it over and done with. Wasn’t sick, all fine.

puta91 · 18/06/2020 21:56

I've genuinley never even thought of this and I've had two, think mine were delivered naturally.

Twizbe · 18/06/2020 21:57

I had the injection both times. Second time I didn't actually need it. I delivered it before they'd finished injecting me.

No side effects at all

firstimemamma · 18/06/2020 21:57

Despite managing to push the baby out in less than half an hour, it took 45 mins for me to deliver the bloody placenta! Not trying to scare you, I just wish someone had warned me! The thought it might take longer than the baby had never even entered my mind. Had the injection in the end with no side effects.

Irishprincess · 18/06/2020 21:58

I had the injection just after water birth delivery. They helped me out of the water and onto a bed where the placenta was then delivered. Not sure how long I would have had to have waited without the injection but it was good knowing once it was out it was all done and dusted. I feel like once the baby is born the adrenaline would wear off and I don't think I would have coped as well waiting, currently pregnant with DC2 and I'll get it again

shebagthehag · 18/06/2020 21:59

I had the injections both times and was not sick ... actually I can't even remember having the injections or even delivering the placenta. I couldn't even blame the drugs as with dd I had none whatsoever.

LolaLollypop · 18/06/2020 21:59

Had the injection twice, no side effects. The first time the placenta just glooped out. The second time the midwife had a few tugs on it and said "not quite ready". That felt sooo weird Confused At that stage I was just like.. get it out!

Letthemysterybe · 18/06/2020 22:00

Delivering my placenta was worse than delivering the baby. I would definitely opt for the injection.

scrivette · 18/06/2020 22:00

I didn't have it the first time, it came out not too long afterwards and I was concentrating on the baby so didn't really notice.

I had the injection the second time and honestly can't remember anything about it apart from the discussion they wanted it delivered quickly as I had a PPH so recommend the injection.

guineapig1 · 18/06/2020 22:00

Injection here too. All fine and no vomiting

Bridgeofpies · 18/06/2020 22:01

I delivered all 3 of mine naturally. Baby was born and then while we were having skin to skin / first breastfeed etc the blood was draining from the placenta back into baby. After some time (20 mins first time, an hour 3rd time), I was encouraged to push it out. Just stood up and gave a little push like as if doing a poo and it came out so easily. No problems. Then we cut the cord. I think it was easier because the placenta was smaller after all the blood had gone out to the baby!

Mumoblue · 18/06/2020 22:01

I had the injection.
It was really quick and I didn't even really notice it come out.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 18/06/2020 22:01

Had injections for my 3 natural deliveries, honestly barely noticed either the injection or the actual placenta coming, as was far too busy cooing over the new baby Smile
All of mine have come out very quickly after the injection and entire.

Boringnamechanging · 18/06/2020 22:01

I had the injection both times and I'm a bit of a bleeder. No issues and don't really remember delivering the placenta.

Idontneedrescuing · 18/06/2020 22:03

Injection, swift and that’s important because you’ll just want to hold your baby 😊

LunaLoveFood · 18/06/2020 22:04

I think I had the injection the first time but definitely on the second, I remember seeing it on the trolly when they wheeled it over for me to have a look at the placenta it was weird looking

Perro · 18/06/2020 22:04

I wanted a natural 3rd stage, but ended up in surgery having a retained placenta removed (with spinal anaesthesia).

chunkyrun · 18/06/2020 22:04

I can't remember! I just know I'd not long had the baby and midwife tugged it out 😆

SummerHouse · 18/06/2020 22:05

Injection. I think they said that's the thing to do so I did it. Pretty clueless really.

Wynston · 18/06/2020 22:06

First dc i had the injection didn't really know what was going on I had just had my beautiful baby and I was completely blown away by it all.
Second dc was emergency section where I was sedated no option there.

Corcra · 18/06/2020 22:06

I had the injection first time and I didn’t have it the second time. I didn’t notice any difference. It’s probably very individual, like with the birth.
