Are newborn hats needed for summer babies?

I'm due end of July. Do I still need to get a newborn hat for my baby to wear in hospital? If it's anything like last summer, it'll be absolutely roasting! 🔥

My son was born last August and no, he didn’t wear a hat at all (except from immediately after the birth as I had a csec and his temp dropped)
All he wore in hospital was a sleeveless vest over his nappy; it was roasting!

firstimemamma · 09/05/2020 22:01

Yes, my baby was born early August a few years ago and the advice was hat a lot of the time for the first 48 hours and then after that you can assess it and they don't need to wear hats indoors all the time.

I was told something different to this and when the health visitor came to my house on day 5 for the routine health checks I'll never forget the way she said "why is he wearing a hat indoors?!" Made me feel really stupid!

Good luck with the baby Smile

I'd say it would be worth packing one for hospital because I found it was more down to your baby rather than the temperature outside. First ds was fine and seemed to regulate his temperature okay, second ds kept getting cold, the hospital was about the same temperature both times. I wouldn't think you'd need many though or to use them for long if we have a nice summer

So sounds like I should get one for straight after birth?

I had my baby in June last year and he HATED wearing a hat. The nurses kept telling me off, because he kept pulling his little hospital hat off his head.

We forced a sun hat on him a few times in July and August, but it was a struggle.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 10/05/2020 02:51

It was BOILING on the ward and they still said pop a hat on him when I had my son 4 weeks ago. They like them to have a hat straight away after birth. If you don’t have one they will provide one. Also a hat on post natal Ward. Then for leaving to go home. Once home not necessary indoors

avocadont · 10/05/2020 03:19

Partner couldn't find mine in the bag and they gave me one for just after the birth (two weeks ago) so I imagine they need to for immediately after birth regardless of temp outside

avocadont · 10/05/2020 03:19

T'was a warm morning too

CMMum88 · 10/05/2020 03:20

My DS was born in the summer and he needed his woollen hat on as he was cold.

CMMum88 · 10/05/2020 03:21

It might be thirty degrees outside but they are coming from thirty seven degrees and cant regulate their own temperatures for a while 😊

sergeilavrov · 10/05/2020 03:24

I had my second in the Middle East, and the doctor laughed at us when he saw the hat on and took it off Blush Thankfully, it hadn’t been on for long. I’d say it definitely depends on the temperature - in our apartment, with the AC, hat was necessary even when it was 50 degrees outside. This is probably especially true in Britain, because who knows what the weather will do!

Amanduh · 10/05/2020 05:21

I didn’t think so, but just had baby yesterday and it was 26 degrees here. On the (boiling) ward his temp was low; he was cold! Needed a hat and vest. Definitely need one for just after birth

RhymingRabbit3 · 10/05/2020 08:34

That's funny I don't think my youngest wore a hat in hospital at all, we put it on when we left as it was 7am in March so a bit nippy.

Persipan · 10/05/2020 11:22

Take two; baby will be pretty covered in blood and gunk to begin with so the hat put on immediately after birth will get grubby very quickly.

MozzchopsThirty · 10/05/2020 11:24

Your baby absolutely should NOT be wearing a hat indoors

Maybe outside weather dependent but no head covering in the home

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 11/05/2020 17:42

All as above - and also for 'cosmetic' reasons if the babys head is rather misshaped from the birth, the hat will hide it Grin

muddlingmyway · 13/05/2020 14:50

My baby was born in the height of summer and it was about a million degrees on the ward, but baby had to wear a hat, vest, babygro and wrapped in blanket in hospital for the whole week we were there - got told off of his hat came off! He was on antibiotics but well. When the midwife came to visit after we got home she said to strip him down to his nappy 🤷‍♀️😂.

India999 · 13/05/2020 16:22

My baby was born in December. Had a visit from midwife the day after he was born and she looked at her watch and said "born 25 hours ago!" And whipped his hat off. Apparently the advice now is no hats indoors after 24 hours!

India999 · 13/05/2020 16:23

Also, they put a hat on them in (NHS) hospitals so if you don't have one, don't panic.

20viona · 13/05/2020 16:42

I had my daughter last July it was boiling and they were insistent on her wearing a hat the whole time we were in hospital and it was roasting.

TeaAddict235 · 13/05/2020 16:53

According to my DM a snowsuit and snood are mandatory. She'll do some mittens for you if yer like?

georgialondon · 13/05/2020 16:59

Yes for right after they are born

BarbiesWorld · 13/05/2020 17:03

Don't all hospitals provide them or is it just some? Where I had both of mine they were given a hat straight after birth. They use a traffic light system so green for healthy, orange for the ones that need keeping an eye on and red for those that need more. They're brand new and you keep it so. Might be worth checking if it's like that where you're giving birth because honestly, DS is 3 months and hasn't worn a hat since coming home.

userabcname · 13/05/2020 17:08

Take one to the hospital because ime babies have to be properly dressed at all times even though post natal wards are hotter than the fiery pits of hell in summer. And do NOT take polyester pjs for you!! Loose cotton clothing and a hand held fan are definitely advisable.

muddlingmyway · 13/05/2020 18:13

Yes 100% agree with Katniss re thin cotton clothes for you too - the plastic mattresses, heating set to 4000 degrees and postnatal sweats (or was that just me?!) made for a very very warm stay. Meant to say yes hospital provided hats for us too. Though they were a little small for our big noggin!
