I am desperate to hear some positive (even neutral will do) VB experiences on here! Everything I have read has made me terrified and so anxious as it all seems to end in months and years of recovery or leaving you traumatised from how bad it was. Surely there must be some good ones out there? I know it's never going to be enjoyable but it would be nice to read about births that didn't end in huge tears and forceps etc 😬

My DS was a nice easy birth. I mean, labour was painful of course and it wasn't especially slow or fast, but I got in the zone so to speak, and was able to remain calmer than first time round and be more in tune with my body and what was going on. I had no intervention or drugs and my worst injury was a small graze! Remember, people who have had a hard time are more likely to post about it because they need to talk. Plenty of births go okay.

I liked giving birth and was disappointed to have to have a c section with my footling breach third.

First labour was 4 hours, second was 45 minutes. I have had more painful periods before and I was on a natural high. (I did use G&A for the stitches afterwards though as they hurt in a completely different way).

Contractions started 5am. Went to hospital about noon. Straight up to labour room. Had gas and air. The midwife broke my waters and then I laboured in the shower. Needed to push so back to the bed. I was kneeling, not lying down, I highly recommend it! Pushed for what seemed like 10 mins but DH says was 45. I didn't get that ring of fire crowning sensation. Baby was born about 5.15pm, 12 hours after labour began.
Slight tear was stitched (that's the part I remember as painful). Baby and I were home by lunch time the next day. It was great. Such an amazing experience. To prepare I did pregnancy yoga, gentle birth app and positive thoughts. I made a concerted effort to ignore negative stories

Also, read everything Ina May Gaskin has written. One book in particular, the first half is positive birth stories. I can't remember what it's called. But it's fantastic.

I think it's "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth"

My second was a fantastic experience. I was over a week over my due date and as I was high risk from my first they were keen to induce. I was equally keen to not be induced! . I had a sweep on the Monday morning and went into labour an hour later. Contractions for 18hrs then they stopped. Went for reflexology a few hours later. Contractions started up again. Laboured at home all day and night. Had so much fun. Dh did my tens and we watched Black Books. Laughed loads. Hypnobirthing stuff. Eventually I went for a walk at about 5. Just me and the dog in a field of sheep. Got to 3 mins between contractions at about 6. Decided to go in to the ward. Very hairy journey there but we made it at 7.30. Baby born at 12. Loads of laughing and jokes and fun. I felt like a queen when I realised what I'd just done.

I still think of it when I need to feel powerful!

It doesn't have to be awful! My waters broke at 38+2 but nothing happened for 24 hours so I was induced. I was all geared up for drip, epidural, 3 long days of waiting, but after the pessary I had a 3 hour labour with gas and air. I had an episiotomy that I couldn't feel. I generally say it was "fine" if asked! I did hemorrhage but that was more of an annoyance than anything as I had to have a hormone drip post-birth.

It was worse trying to wee and poo afterwards.

India999 · 13/05/2020 16:27

I had a horrible induction but when I got to delivery I couldn't believe how amazing it was!! VERY positive experience (I had an epidural!) and I'm genuinely excited to do it again. Midwives were amazing, talked me through everything, etc. A few scares here and there but all handled brilliantly. And I felt no pain! Recovered in a few weeks (with stitches) apart from some pesky night sweats that lasted until 12 weeks.

I was completely text book fron start to finish.
Waters went in the bath 12pm 23/12
Contractions started around 4pm 23/12
Got in the pool at 6am
DS born at 11.38am Christmas Eve

Home birth, little intervention. First time mum. Did hypnobirthing course and when the time came I just got in the zone. Was not fully convinced when I read the books etc but it was great. Gave me the knowledge that my body could do it and I was in control.
No stitches or other intervention required post.
Tucked up in my bed by 3pm Christmas Eve by the wonderful midwives.

I’m not going to say it was a breeze. It wasnt. But I hunkered down and breathed through. You can do it! Flowers

Just had my 4th baby 48 hours ago. Caught an Uber into the hospital once I felt that the little niggling pain was probably going to kick off into full on labour, got to hospital and did about 45 mins of monitoring before my waters broke and baby was out 10 mins later. Easy, no fuss no muss.

Depends on each person and how your labour will go but it doesn't all have to be some 30+ hour nightmare.

My first was my longest at about 4 hours maybe, second was an impromptu water birth that happened 15 mins after I arrived at the hospital and third one was about half an hour max.

Considering my kids are now 3.5, 2.5, 1 and 2 days I'd say it hasn't been particularly traumatic to put me off doing it several times Smile

I had an epidural with me first. No problems at all with the epidural itself. 24hrs from start to baby. Needed a ventouse delivery and a few stitches. Due number 2 in 4 weeks and hoping for another epidural, best thing ever

So mine started off as the typical 'horror' story you read online. Baby was back to back and I had contractions every 5 mins for 36 hours but wasnt dilating fast at all. I googled and googled and every single story I read was that it was going to end up that baby would either end up being pulled out with forceps or I'd have to have an EMCS.

It went completely different. Yes I was in labour a long time, and yes it was slow dilation. I went into hospital at 02:30 and was 2cm. Went back home in tears, fearing the worst. That morning I went in at 09:15 because my contractions were bad and I was having alot of pressure. I was 10cm, and 20 minutes later baby was born. No time for pain relief apart from G&A in the last few minutes. I had 1 tiny tear and some grazing. I felt like a superwoman afterwards and it was genuinely the best part of my pregnancy. I could talk about it over and over.
During my entire pregnancy I was all for having an epidural and didnt know how anyone could ever possibly push an entire baby out of their vagina, possibly tear, and not have any pain relief.
Your body knows exactly what to do and the adrenaline gets you through it. It hurts, and it's an unexplainable pain, but the joy of the baby arriving over rules everything afterwards.

Thank you so much for this thread. I'm only 6 weeks pregnant with my first baby but ever since we found out all I can think about is how awful labour is going to be and how much pain I will be in. I can't stop thinking that I'm going to lose control and baby won't make it out without loads of intervention. Obviously, there are loads of horror stories on Mumsnet and they make my blood run cold. My partner and our parents are so excited and I feel so guilty that I can't be excited because I am just so so scared.

Thank you thank you thank you lovely ladies for these stories ❤️

I had the most amazing water birth at home four weeks ago, I can honestly say that I really enjoyed the labour and birth. I'll paste my birth story below:

I woke up at 6am on my due date thinking I could feel my waters starting to trickle so I ran to our bathroom where they started gushing on the way. I woke hubby and after our last baby was born before the midwives got here he was straight on the phone to triage! We were worried that they were going to say there wasn’t enough staff for a home birth, but I was so relieved when the lady on the phone said she would get the community midwife to phone me back. She phoned within 10 minutes, as my contractions hadn’t started at this point she suggested I phoned her back when they did but I explained that in my previous labours I delivered very soon after my contractions started. She then realised I was the lady who my midwife had emailed about and set off straight away, she was here within an hour of phoning and I’ve never seen my husband look so relieved when he heard her knock on the door!

At this point our two eldest children (10 and 8 years) were up and very excited. Hubby went downstairs to start inflating the pool and our daughter was putting all her battery tea lights on in the living room and turned on the fairy lights and light on the fire. I was sat upstairs in bed on a towel and going back over a couple of my hypnobirthing videos while I was waiting for the contractions to start.

The first midwife arrived just before 7am and I went downstairs at that point. She took my blood pressure and listened in on baby’s heartbeat, then other than listening to the heartbeat later on they didn’t touch me at all. Hubby started filling the pool and I was bouncing on my birthing ball. We had some breakfast then our almost 3 year old woke up about 8.30am. My contractions started around 9am (I’d already delivered our second and third by this point!). They were manageable through using my breathing techniques and bouncing on the ball helped. The two community midwives from my area arrived not long after and the first midwife left. Our children stayed until around 10am, then my husband took them next door. At this point my contractions started ramping up in intensity and frequency but I was still able to breathe my way through them. We were sat chatting and laughing with the midwives, it was so chilled. Hubby kept telling me off for not saying when I was having a contraction, but I was able to manage with just my breathing if I was left to it and I could see that the midwives knew when I was having one and were discretely watching me and writing it down!

I didn’t want to get into the pool too soon as I’d read that it can slow your labour down, but decided I felt ready about 11am. I remember hubby bringing in the step ladders for me to climb in, but the midwives suggested the little step would be better!! Once in the pool the relief from the water was amazing. I still kept focusing on my breathing throughout each contraction and imagining our baby being here soon. The midwives were incredible at making me feel relaxed, they never once asked me if I wanted a VE and instead encouraged me to go with whatever my body was telling me to do but I knew they were there if I needed.

Just after 11.30am I could feel the change into baby transitioning down and my body just took over and told me I needed to start pushing. I had gas and air at this point. I felt most comfortable leaning over the side of the pool and could feel gravity doing its thing. I did have a slight panic when the midwife told me I would need to be the one to bring baby up to me when he was born, but she assured me I would be able to do it! I used the gas and air for each contraction and was visualising his head coming down as I could feel it which really helped. My husband was amazing at reminding me about my breathing and telling me how good I was doing, and my midwife was helping to encourage me to breathe in fresh air when I wasn’t pushing. I felt his head emerging (11.47am) and it all felt so much more manageable this time, I think it was a combination of being in the water and having midwives present this time. His body followed soon after and I can’t even describe how incredible it felt when I held him and pulled him up to my chest. 🥰 He was so chilled when he was born, just looking around and taking it all in! I had delayed cord clamping and hubby went and got our children from next door so they could meet him after 5 minutes. Hubby cut the cord and I had the injection for the placenta this time as it took me over an hour to deliver it last time and I didn’t want to risk bleeding when everything had been so straightforward. He was born at 11.47am and feeding by 12.11pm!

I got out of the pool and the midwife examined me. I only had a first degree tear this time and they suggested it would heal best on its own, so this was the only one of my births where I haven’t had stitches. He had his Vitamin K injection and was weighed at 7lb 1oz. By 1.30pm I’d had a shower, was back downstairs dressed and with my hair dried and sat having cuddles as a family of 6 with a Dominoes on the way! The midwives left not long after. After a traumatic first hospital birth, second very quick hospital birth and third home birth without a midwife, we finally got the perfect home water birth that we always wanted. We felt so positive afterwards and I feel like I’ve recovered so quickly this time.
