How many clothes did you buy for the first 3-6 months of your baby's life?

I am currently 22 weeks pregnant and trying very hard not to buy baby clothes as I am hoping to find some good deals with summer sale, plus I know we will receive lots from friends and family.

However, I was wondering how many clothes we will realistically need for the first few months and in which sizes?! I keep reading very different things online and whilst I understand everyone is different, I'd like to get an idea of what is considered a good amount to have.

We have received a few gifts already and, so far, we have: 4 sleepsuits 0-3 months, 2 short sleeve bodysuits 0-3 months, 1 short sleeve bodysuit newborn size.

Thanks in advance!

It really depends on how often you want to do washing!
If you wash once a week then probably 10-15 sleepsuits and the same for vests?
Lots of people say only get 0-3 month sizes but my 7lb 13oz girl was drowned by them and in tiny baby for about a month and then newborn until about 2-3 months ish. But it wouldn't harm to hold off on the smaller sizes until you know how big they are and how quickly they grow!

I echo Seaglass - lots of people told me to only get 0-3 months but both of my babies (7lbs3oz and 7lbs2oz) needed newborn size and 0-1 months. 0-3 months swamped them until 7-8 weeks!

Very few, because I got loads of baby clothes as presents and hand me downs! Before birth, we probably had 8 short sleeves vests and a similar amount of babygrows in Newborn size, a few - 5 or 6 of the same in 0-3, then we got lots of presents. My babies were both born in the autumn, so it was easy to layer up, but if I was expecting a spring/summer baby Id be wary of stocking up on too much long legged/long sleeved stuff. Its worth bearing in mind too, that the age ranges on baby clothes are just a guide. Like adults, babies come in all sizes, and may be taller or fatter or smaller etc than average an d different brands come up bigger or smaller than others. Gap = generally tiny! Asda - Big , H&M long and thin too of thing.

Not sure how often I plan on doing the washing, I guess as often as it's needed? I don't want to have too few pieces that I have to was everything on a daily basis but happy to do the laundry more than once a week.
It's going to be an end of summer baby so I'm not sure about temperature either. Could be 25 degrees but also 10 degrees!

I’d have a couple of the short rompers in up to 1 month or similar (they tend to come in 2s) and then about 10 baby grows in newborn and similar in 0-3. The sizes vary so much from shop to shop. DD was a preemie and we found Tesco was the smallest, M&S tended to run quite big.

Our boy is due in July and I have

4 newborn vests and sleepsuits
4 up to 1 month short sleeve vests and sleepsuits
7 0-3 mth short sleeve vests
4 0-3 mth rompers
4 0-3 mth sleepsuits
1 cardigan in 0-3 mths

I have hedged my bets by buying a little of each size, I chose newborn from John Lewis is it's bigger than marks and Spencer's etc
I also bought some sleepsuits for cooler evenings and some rompers for hotter days. If it's boiling then it will be a short sleeve vest or a nappy!

I figured if I had a small amount anything that goes unworn can be donated to a women shelter and I wouldn't feel too wasteful.

Then if the newborn only does a week or 2 I won't feel too bad. Being a July baby I know I can wash daily and should be able to line dry but we have a tumble dryer anyway.

Once he is here we can then add if we need to.

I had originally planned to just buy one pack then buy more when he arrived but covid changed my mind!

I bought approx 10 sleepsuits and 10 short sleeve vests in each size, newborn, 0-1m and 0-3m. I echo what other posters say about 0-3 being far too big for a newborn. However I think newborn and 0-1 are so similar you could get away with one or the other.

Just like women's clothes a newborn size in one shop could be equivalent to a 0-1 in another so I would get a mix. I bought from Sainsbury's, Boots, M&S and Asda.

I only bought sleepsuits for first three months, got a couple of proper outfits gifted. Honestly sleepsuits are much easier so unless you really want to properly dress your little one just focus on them.

My little boy was born at the beginning of Feb so we got only long sleeved and booted sleepsuits, you might want to get some in a romper style too if you are having a summer babe.

I got all our vests from Tesco but ended up replacing fairly early with Asda because our little boy is very long and I found the Asda ones fitted better.

If I was doing it again I would get 10 sleepsuits and 10 vests (mix of shops) in 0-1 and 10 of each in 0-3 also.

I've been doing a load of washing probably an average of every other day and never run short.
