Do hospitals provide nappies?

Hi all.

I'm nearly 34 weeks pregnant and am starting to think about packing a hospital bag on the off chance that I start to labour early.

Do I need to pack nappies for the baby (and if so, how many?)? I would have assumed so and before the pandemic would have gone with ten or so. But since DH can't visit and bring extras if the baby and I need to stay in the hospital longer than anticipated, how can I get more nappies for the baby?

@GameSetMatch studies have shown that you'd have to stimulate your nipples basically constantly for it to bring on labour.

Some women can express some milk before. It's very rich and good for baby so it's worth saving. I had about 10 syringes worth which was useful as baby wouldn't eat at first as she was too sleepy from all the drugs

The Bounty packs we had had a sample pack of 3 nappies in. I wouldn't rely on them being guaranteed though. 10 nappies should be ok, but if you're still worried, take a full pack.

Those saying maternity pads.

Go without. And get the serious Tena/Depends pants.

Not glamorous but absolute lifesavers for the first few days and nights.

On the subject of flannels, if the have showers take a old flannel to put between your legs while you dry off. Post birth bleeding is quite alarming. I was bending down to mop the floor.

If you have a power bank that's a good idea for on the labour ward as theres a lot of equipment plugged in.

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/04/2020 22:58

@SleepingStandingUp - I had a full pack in Dec and my bf who gave birth a couple a week ago had a full pack too. I thought it was standard

MissMarks · 15/04/2020 23:05

Funding was cut in some areas for Bounty packs- I know a rep and she lost her job because of it.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/04/2020 00:28

I had vouchers fro bounty packs to collect from Argos or Tesco etc but twisn and lockdown...

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 16/04/2020 00:33

I just took a small pack, but dont panic, if there were complications and you had to stay in they would sort out nappies for your baby to tide you over until you could get someone to bring you more.

Those saying the Bounty packs have them, you don’t always get those given to you so don’t rely on that.

MarinaMarinara · 16/04/2020 21:30

If there are no visitors presumably there will be no Bounty reps or packs? (Disclaimer - I had a private room both times, DH politely asked the Bounty rep with DC1 not to come in and with DC2 the midwife with me did that for me so I don’t know how they work or what is in the packs)

No they don't provide them

schafernaker · 20/04/2020 15:34

@FoxtrotSkarloey they’ve been banned at my local hospital.

We had an awful experience of them barging in asking where the baby was, she was in NICU. A few days later they came round when DD was on the transition ward and asked if we preferred if they waited til she had got rid of the feeding tube to take pictures. Needless to say we told them we didn’t want their pictures 😡

As for nappies. A small pack will do. We are currently having the size 0 or size 1 debate. Hopeful we can go with size 1!!

Chichz · 21/04/2020 14:12

I'm only 22 weeks but this has definitely got me thinking!

Can I ask why maternity pads rather than just sanitary pads? Would even the night-time ones not be thick enough?

I am absolutely clueless about childbirth and only just allowing/making myself start to think about it a bit more! Grin

WantingSummerFeet · 21/04/2020 14:17

I was in for 2 nights baby went through 12 nappy's in the first day! Pooped so much Confused

wanderlove · 21/04/2020 14:17

You can buy a 6 pack of formula milk with teats that is all sterilised to keep as a back up. I'd normally say don't bother if planning to breast feed as your partner could nip out and get one if you were desperate but might be worth getting? You can donate to the food bank after if you dont need it

BacklashStarts · 21/04/2020 16:59

@Chichz I’m afraid the post birth bleeding is way way heavier than a period. In the first day I was wearing 2 pads at once and changing hourly. If I did it again I’d get those tens heavy duty incontinence pants and line with a maternity pad. It tails down fairly quickly but you do bleed after from bloody ages!

Chichz · 21/04/2020 17:08

@BacklashStarts Thank you - I might look into the pants! I would have had no idea. X
