I’m booked for a c section, as baby is breech. Did anyone have the spinal block and what is it like? I’m so nervous & worried. Would love to hear some positive things to keep my mind at ease.

I had an elective c section for my 2nd with a spinal block, it was a lovely experience! It was more painful in the initial post natal period than with my 1st baby but each day got a bit easier and I was driving again within a month. A good tip is to set up things you will need at waist height (eg changing station at the table) as you won't bee able to bend.

ScissorsBike · 10/04/2020 17:59

It's lovely, and a very calm experience. I adored both of mine, and feel rather smug that I didn't have to push a baby out my vagina!

Hi, I've had 3 c sections including one emergency, and 2 elective, I can say that during my elective csections I felt calm and relaxed throughout as I was told having the spinal block that I would not feel anything and it worked so quickly then it was numb.best feeling is when you hold your precious baby in your arms, all the best for your csection😊

Sipperskipper · 10/04/2020 18:03

My section was an emergency one, and difficult as baby was stuck. Despite this, it was still overwhelmingly positive, recovery was more straightforward than I imagined and I have no long lasting issues.

I'm having an elective section for this baby due in August and I am looking forward to it!

I had a planned c-section with DD2 as DD1 birth caused a lot of trauma. It was AMAZING. Lovely experience. Felt a little queasy with the spinal block but only for a few seconds. My Dr said “you may feel some pulling now” and I hadn’t realised he had even started!! It was a lovely relaxing atmosphere. The staff were ace. I was back on my feet in no time and only had Paracetamol from day 2.

I had an elective section with my 2nd DC and it was wonderful.

The medical staff were all very reassuring and I felt very listened to.

It took longer than I expected but that might be because I had an emergency one with my first and was basing my expectation on that.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help from the MWs overnight - I ad my catheter in until the next morning, and obviously having surgery leaves you in pain.

But compared to the horror show that was me attempting to have a vaginal birth, it was dreamy!

Good luck! You’ll get so much info before the day

I had an elective section and it was lovely! Very calm and nice, they even let me pick what music I wanted to listen to.

I really struggled to poop for a couple of weeks after though, always recommend a squatty potty!

RhymingRabbit3 · 10/04/2020 18:12

I have a few friends who had an elective section and all said it was calm and relaxed. Recovery seemed to be easy and you know in advance it's coming so you can put things in place to make it easier when you come home

OneJumpAhead · 10/04/2020 18:23

I had an elective c section and it went very well. The medical team were really friendly and relaxed and they talk you through everything and check in all the time. Your birth partner can be right next to your head so you have their support too and you can listen to music. It’s understandable to be apprehensive but to be honest my c section experience was a lot better than previous ‘natural’ birth. Couldn’t feel a thing and baby was in my arms very quickly. Good luck and enjoy your baby

blablablablablablabla · 10/04/2020 18:31

I echo what @ScissorsBike says.

I loved my elective section for first-only baby. So calm and wonderful. The spinal was fine, quite a lot of pushing to get it in the right place but absolutely fine afterwards. Recovery was fine, I felt back to normal in two weeks totally but 80% back in 1 week.

All the best for your delivery and new baby 👶

oohnicevase · 10/04/2020 18:31

I've had both and the c section was much calmer .. the recovery is worse but with the drugs it's ok. I had no painkillers after by vaginal delivery .

GrumpySausage · 10/04/2020 18:37

I had a planned c section with my 2nd as she was breech. It was honestly such a calm experience. I felt much happier and calmer than I did with my vbac. I felt physically better after my c section much quicker than I did with my natural labour. I had no issues with recovery and was feeling back to normal within about 4/5 weeks.

Twinberry · 10/04/2020 18:41

Spinal is fine, nowhere near as bad as I was imagining! It’s like any other local anaesthetic injection. I was being sick during my c section and also very shivery and shaky which is a reaction to the drugs. Both completely fine but I would have found it reassuring to know that might happen.

helterskelter3 · 10/04/2020 18:43

Oh they’re just lovely. Much better experience than a ‘natural’ birth that was stressful and ended in panic and intervention. It’s all calm, I actually enjoyed the births of my children delivered by sections. The ‘natural’ birth was awful. The recovery from the sections were harder/different but the benefits far outweighed this. I was completely with it throughout. Sit back and enjoy!

PatriciaBateman · 10/04/2020 20:03

My planned c-section was an absolute dream compared to my other births. I had quite a lot of pain for the few days afterward, but less than with my first "natural" birth and accompanying tear.

I also recovered much faster with the c-section - weeks and it was all done/dusted, rather than the years worth of undercarriage/sexual/continence damage and psychological damage that went with my other births.

Seriously79 · 10/04/2020 20:04

I had an emergency section last June and it was a dream, if not a little quick and dramatic.

However, the recover was a lot harder than I imagined it would be x

TiggeryBear · 10/04/2020 20:13

I've had two elective c-sections. They were both remarkably pleasant experiences to be honest. Both my recoveries were straightforward. If I were to have another baby (I won't - no more babies for me!) I'd definitely chose to have another.

userabcname · 10/04/2020 20:15

Had an ELCS nearly 6 months ago - it was lovely! The spinal didn't bother me at all, the actual op was very calm and a lovely way to deliver (much much nicer than my first "natural" birth). I found the recovery absolutely fine - keep on top of your painkillers for the first few days especially but by day 10 I didn't need to take even paracetamol. I would take a c section over a vaginal birth any day of the week!

BigRedBoat · 10/04/2020 21:06

Forgot to say the only downside to the spinal block was that I got horribly itchy, especially my face and eyes but they gave me some medicine to make that go away, apparently it's fairly common but they hadn't warned me about that so just a heads up!

villainousbroodmare · 10/04/2020 21:11

One EMCS after an awful failed induction and an ELCS with twins. Both great. No post-op issues except for gas pain in abdomen. It is v common and can feel like backache or shoulder pain. Peppermint tea sorted it out when I got home and realised what it was, and I wish I'd had some in the hospital bag!

ThursdayLastWeek · 10/04/2020 22:31

There are less potential complications wish a spinal block than an epidural IIRC?

Or my doctors might have just told me that because the epidural with my first went so bloody wrong Grin. It certainly felt much less complicated.

A lot of people seem to bounce back very quickly. I didn’t, I was in pain for a few weeks but noticeably decreasing.
I don’t say that to scare you, I just want you to know that everyone’s body reacts differently. I had to call my GP for pan relief when I was home and was prescribed codeine.

lauryloo · 10/04/2020 22:33

My elective c section was a lovely experience

Hubby got the most amazing pic of my massive smile as they lifted dd out

Due another in 4 weeks or so and feeling relaxed about it
