Baby no.2 after pph

Hi all,

Me and my partner are now starting to think about baby no.2.

The issue we are having is i had a traumatic birth. I went in to labour at 36 + 3, and had my son within like 5 hours. I then Haemorrhaged and lost 2.2 ltrs of blood, tore in 3 places ( 2 of which required stitches and i was then left for 13+ hours before receiving 2 blood transfusions, in which time i developed pressure sores as i wasn’t allowed/ capable of moving from the bed and didn’t have the bedding/ padding changed in this time.

Don’t get me wrong i think the midwives and doctors who basically saved my life are amazing i just think a couple of things slipped through the net but it happens i guess.

Has anyone else had a traumatic birth 1st time around and then went on to have a successful happy experience the next? Also thinking about the elective c section route but not sure if i’d be granted this.

Thank you😊

I had a severe 3rd degree tear that had to be patched up under general anesthetic, a PPH where I lost 3.5l of blood, blood transfusions, sepsis and a suspected blood clot. Was in HDU for nearly a week after birth. For DC2 I had an ELCS - it was fantastic! So calm and smooth, the recovery was so easy compared to my first (home the next day!) and I found it a very healing experience actually, in a weird way. The consultant was very supportive of a cs for me and I was thrilled as I did not want to deliver vaginally again! Good luck, I hope it goes well for you the next time.

Sorry to hear your birth experience wasn't great! But lovely to know you had a smooth and calm experience the next time round, it really helps. I think i'm going to mention an elective section, just not sure if i'd be granted one but fingers crossed xx

Definitely ask. My main questions were: what caused the pph the first time? (The tearing for me) and what would be the risks of a vaginal delivery again? (Tearing again and hemorrhaging again). Then weigh those up against the risks of a cs. Best of luck with your decision!

Hey, I had a PPH and significant tears with my first. My second was fine, normal vaginal delivery and was at home a few hours after the birth. Couldn’t have been more different! You’re pregnancy and labour will be consultant led so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and talk through the options. I’m now 37 weeks with my 3rd so hoping things go ok this time too!

katnissK - it was never actually explained to me but by the sounds of it what i've heard from my partner it was an issue with my placenta and not the tears which caused me to haemorrhage. Hopefully next time it will be a better experience

Pindlesandneedles - its so good to hear you had such a please experience😊 i was high risk with my 1st pregnancy as well so was under consultant lead care then, fingers crossed this time i can ask the right questions and get more comfortable and relaxed for when the time comes! Good luck with baby no.3😊
