What did you eat after your c section?

I am wondering what snacks (if any) to pack for the hospital?

Did you have an appetite afterwards?

Any tips gratefully received. I'm likely to need to stay in at least 2 nights.

Tea and toast 3 to 4 hours after she was born.
Whatever they served for lunch. Sandwiches and soup I think.
Then fish pie and chips for tea.
I took some protein bars and bottled water. Dh bought me pepsi max and turkish delight from the vending machine.

We only stayed one night and I managed to eat a chinese take out when we got home.

theruffles · 10/03/2020 13:45

Tea and toast a few hours after - best thing I've tasted! It was a real comfort after surgery. I didn't realise I was hungry until they put toast in front of me.
Weetabix and orange juice for breakfast and macaroni cheese for lunch. Also tasted amazing.
I took Lucozade, breakfast bars, raisins and things like that in my hospital bag but didn't end up eating them.

Connie222 · 10/03/2020 13:46

First one, no one fed me for two days. They didn’t mention food. I presumed I wasn’t allowed to eat after surgery.

Second one, I was in the recovery room and very surprised when someone came round with the food lists and asked me to chose. My dinner was brought to the recovery room. Dh had to go and pick up Ds from school, he came back with a thermos of tea and a pack of biscuits which I ate latee the at night on the ward while cuddling Dd. For the second on though I took food into bag - ceral bars etc incase o wasn’t fed again. I fainted the first time I stood up after the first as I’d not had food in in 36 hours at that point (from fasting before op) so it wasn’t something I wanted to repeat if I wasn’t fed this time.

Connie222 · 10/03/2020 13:48

There was no reason I couldn’t eat after the first by the way - the hospital were just negligent. You had to walk to the food room. Only no one told me. And it’s quite hard to walk when you can’t feel your legs.

inwood · 10/03/2020 13:48

No tea and toast foe me. I had a tinned ravioli (hospital lunch offering), followed by pate and brie on crackers.

moleeye · 10/03/2020 13:49

#1 black currant jam on bread. It was glorious. Best thing I had ever eaten and I ate it every day thereafter for months!

#2 Heinz cup a soup as he was poorly and rushed to NICU so food was an afterthought

Tableclothing · 10/03/2020 13:51

Everything I could lay my hands on.

I remember a chicken dinner, a lot of toast, all the snack bars and fruit I brought, vast quantities of Jaffa cakes.

It was about 24 hours between having to stop eating and feeling well enough to start again.

DesLynamsMoustache · 10/03/2020 13:53

Toast right after op in recovery. Then whatever was for lunch, just soup and a sandwich I think.

ThunderPython · 10/03/2020 13:55

DC1 - toast and then devoured the top layer of a box of Milk Tray. Then was sick.

9 years later :

DC 2 - A very melted Double Decker. I think it was the nicest, tastiest, food I've ever eaten in my life. Then I was sick.

So, that's what not to eat after a c-section.

ChipsAreLife · 10/03/2020 13:58

I'n unlucky and have always felt sick and had no appetite after mine. All I wanted was salads so DH or family would bring those in for me. Like others said there is a room where they serve lunch but I felt so sick I couldn't handle the food smells so just stayed on the ward!

Snack wise maybe take some cereal bars, dried fruit, biscuits etc.

Cereal bar, good coffee, sarnie from m&s just outside, loads of fresh fruit.......sent DP to the m&s basically and he did VERY well at buying great treats

Oblomov20 · 10/03/2020 14:16

I was starving! Think they gave me toast, both times. Then I had a hospital meal as soon as I could!!

mynameiscalypso · 10/03/2020 14:20

I had some chocolate chip cookies that I'd baked that morning and a packet of Percy Pigs. The next morning (having stayed in overnight) my DH went out and bought me a bacon sandwich and it was the best thing ever.

Connie222 · 10/03/2020 14:36

Oh god, I’d forgotten about the McDonalds breakfast my Dh brought me the next day after the 2nd. After having HG all the way through pregnancy, It was glorious.

Pinkbunny2811 · 10/03/2020 14:48

I always recommend to eat something light and slowly. ideally soups, jelly, yogurt, plenty of fluids. Till you start passing wind. Then you can start on carby things.

I've seen far too many people in agony as their bowels aren't working properly. Often it's when people have had a McDonald's or pizza straight after coming out of recovery. I get it, I can't go 5 mins without eating, I'd dread over 24hrs!

Crystal87 · 10/03/2020 14:53

The first one I wasnt allowed to eat for 13 hours because it was an emergency.
2nd, I had something after but can't remember.
3rd, had a sandwich straight after as it was lunch time and they were bringing food round.
4th had a sandwich my partner brought in then hospital food later on.

plixy · 10/03/2020 14:54

I was starving and ate everything they offered. I was so hungry i actually found the hospital food tasty!
We had packed snacks for my husband as the hospital won't feed partners and I ate a lot of that too.
There's no restriction on what you can eat once you leave recovery but hospital usually only bring food at set times so definitely take your own.

SapphosRock · 10/03/2020 14:57

This is all really useful, thank you!

I'm the sort of person who likes to know when their next meal is coming and what it will be.

I remember the tea and toast after giving birth to DC1 being glorious but we were home a few hours later so no need for snacks.

Ragwort · 10/03/2020 15:00

I sent my DH out for M & S sandwiches Grin.

Can remember the difficulty of walking to the 'breakfast room', you weren't allowed to leave your baby in the ward but it wasn't easy to carry a tray - can't really remember any more Thank Goodness, all blanked out of my memory.

tegucigalpa13 · 10/03/2020 15:05

.....too much, too soon and then threw up which is really uncomfortable post c- section.

stick to weak tea and crackers.

Nat6999 · 10/03/2020 15:09

Emcs, ds delivered at 6.22pm, came out of theatre about 7.15pm taken to high dependency, hadn't been allowed food during induction, not given any food & only 5ml of water per hour until lunchtime next day, then didn't get any food until next day, they told my mum that IV had nutrients in it. My mum ended up bringing me sandwiches day after & brought me a bag of snacks when I got to post natal ward as I was so weak I couldn't walk to dining room so didn't get fed. Discharged myself after 4 days & went home, my mum cooked me a full english fry up, it didn't touch the sides. Take lots of snack stuff with you & drinks, because chances are you will miss ordering food for at least delivery day.

Tittie · 10/03/2020 15:10

I was desperate for that post birth tea and toast that everyone said was so good, but the maternity ward didn't allow that for 'health and safety reasons' Hmm yet it was an option at breakfast. I had to have a tasteless cold roast chicken salad sandwich instead. When I left hospital about 5 hours later I made dh take us to the McDonald's drive through and it was magnificent Grin

SapphosRock · 10/03/2020 15:24

Okay so I'll try not to eat too much too soon!

I've seen people recommend peppermint tea on here for all the wind.

TwoKidsStillStanding · 10/03/2020 15:31

First time, section was late morning. Had water, then sandwich, yogurt and banana.

Second time, section was mid-afternoon. I was offered toast in recovery but had no appetite whatsoever. Eventually was persuaded to eat some toast about four hours later.

I got DP to bring me some full-fat Ribena and had that with some shortbread in the night but it took a while to get an appetite back.
