Hey guys, i am on my 3rd trimester and confused on choosing what and which brand to buy.

Can you please help me in listing out essential feeding kits for new born?

How many bottles? Prep machine? Avent or Tommee Tippee? I am planning to breastfeed, so which breast bump to go for?

Many thanks!

My advice?
Don’t buy bottles yet, or at least don’t spend lots.
I bought loads, wasted so much money as DS refused every brand other than dr browns

Connie222 · 03/03/2020 13:09

Prep machine is a godsend. I had one with my second 6 years ago and it was great. Pregnant again and I’ll be buying a new one.

I’d second not buying too many bottles - you never know which one the baby will prefer! Teats can be a minefield too, both mine never got on with the new born slow flow, one was right into the medium and then quickly the fast, one was on variflow. I’d buy a couple of each.

Have a think about what sort of steriliser you want as well. I had a microwave one last time which was really good.

Eshaar · 03/03/2020 14:29

Thanks much! Any advise which brand to go for prep machine?

I got Avent and they leaked a lot, much prefer Tommee tippee. As for prep machine I think it's pure laziness and not necessary at all. I preferred to make bottles by hand the old fashioned way.

Connie222 · 03/03/2020 14:34

I used the tommee tippee prep - actually I think it was the only one around at the time, they were very new.

I never felt lazy using it! Why would I? Saved a lot of faff for night feeds.

TwoKidsStillStanding · 03/03/2020 14:42

Are you planning to pump exclusively, or do you just want to be able to express so someone else can give the odd bottle?

If the latter, I’d recommend you buy a couple of MAM bottles - check the label but most are self-sterilising, ie you can sterilise them in the microwave without a steriliser.

For a pump, you could try a manual but my experience is that an electric is easier to get more out so if expressing is a regular thing, I’d probably recommend something like a Medela Swing.

I've got a Tommee Tippee complete care feeding set. No issues so far and he took to the bottles great. The midwife advised lots of newborns have issues with them but it's been great, bottles look good too, not that LO cares 😂

foreverhungry2409 · 03/03/2020 14:53

I went with the whole Tommee Tippee feeding kit with the steriliser, bottles, warming pouch, bottle warmer etc and also got their prep machine. All is fantastic!

Russell19 · 03/03/2020 14:57

You don't need to sterilise anything that's just had breastmilk in it. If you are planning to breastfeed I wouldn't buy a steriliser or prep machine, or even many bottles tbh. When I needed to sterilise teething toys etc I just boiled water in a pan.

Maybe a pump but you aren't advised to pump for the first few weeks/months as it messes with supply. I loved my hakka and had a medela pump but barely used it.

I just thought if I needed anything for bottle feeding I'd just buy it on amazon prime or send my husband out!

Yummymummy2020 · 03/03/2020 14:58

The tommee tippee set is fab, and great value in sale!

babynunber3 · 03/03/2020 19:11

Personally I think the prep machines are a right waste of money! I boil the kettle and make 3 bottle (water only) at a time ! No reason baby can't drink this it's been boiled and cooled aslong as it's not like 12+ hours it's stood it's fine!
Maybe that's caus I've had three baby's and don't fall for the gimmicks anymore 😂 mam bottles are great self sterilising which is fab and great for preventing colic I breastfed, and expressed baby went from these tears to breast no problem xx

Russell19 · 08/03/2020 18:31

@babynunber3 i thought powder had to be mixed in with boiling water though to kill any germs in the formula? Its isn't just about killing the germs in the water.

babynunber3 · 08/03/2020 18:37

@Russel deffo not! It's cooled boiled water not boiling water xx

Pentium85 · 08/03/2020 18:51

@babynunber3

Unfortunately you’re wrong.
Formula powder contains harmful bacteria so MUST be mixed with some boiling water to kill this

babynunber3 · 08/03/2020 19:49

@Pentium85 where does it state tht on the pack?? And well my baby is 13 weeks old and healthy as anything! They bring out new fads all the time , I'm pretty sure they don't make baby milk with harmful bacteria in it!!

Pentium85 · 08/03/2020 20:20

@babynunber3

Are the WHO guidelines satisfactory enough for you? It seriously concerns me that you didn’t know formula contains bacteria.

Pentium85 · 08/03/2020 20:22

@babynunber3

And for the record, health/safety precautions are not ‘fads’, they’re because children have died or been seriously ill due to bacteria in formula

amazedmummy · 08/03/2020 20:26

We have MAM bottles. DS ended up being exclusively bottle fed and he's had no issues with colic. If you wanted to formula feed at all the powder has to be mixed with 70 degree water and then cooled to body temp. We have a kettle that boils water then cools it to 70 which saves so much faff.

babynunber3 · 08/03/2020 20:27

It doesn't contain bacteria! You say it like every pick contains bacteria! It may contain it! May!! Yes that is still a risk however not every tub of milk contains bacteria! Bacteria is everywhere and yes it can caus death at the very very high end scale it's usually immunodeficiency patients and under two months etc , but is still a very very rare thing !

Pentium85 · 08/03/2020 20:31

@babynunber3

Formula powder is not sterile. WHO, NHS and other medically qualified people much more qualified than you I can assume state that formula much be prepared using freshly boiled water. What part of this you don’t understand I don’t know.

Russell19 · 08/03/2020 20:35

It's not a fad.... it's been a thing for a long time. The bacteria in the powder is more harmful than in water.

shinypurplesparkley · 08/03/2020 21:20

We started off with the Avent Natural bottles but we also have boots cheap own (I think they’re 3 for £2.49) and asda cheap own brand. My baby isn’t fussed with any particular brand, yours could be the same. As a PP has said, maybe just have a few to start with in case.

Breastfed for a while but ended up having to express too and then eventually FF when baby was a bit older. Didn’t bother with a manual breast pump, only had the haaka to catch the let down from the other breast. Went straight in with a Medela Swing, did the job ok.

Have made formula the “traditional” way and with the Perfect Prep. Can hand on heart say that the Perfect Prep has been much easier and convenient for us. I wouldn’t bother buying one until you need it though, especially as you’re planning to breastfeed.
