For my first baby i had an emergency c.section with a general anasthetic so do not remember any thing of the birth. (I had however got to 10 cms dilated so have memories of that!) We have been talking about trying for another baby in a year or two, does any body know if i will have to have a second section and why if i do, or will i have the opportunity to have a natural birth?
Reason for first,Baby was undiagnosed breech and i was suffering from pre eclampsia....JOY!!!

What kind of incision did you have? It can make a difference...

I think normally you'd be encouraged to go for vaginal birth, if everything looked ok near to term. Only big "no-no" you can predict now is if you try for a homebirth, you'd be strongly advised not to due to small risk of uterine rupture at the scar point.

A friend of a friend had a c-section with the first, and then pregnant with second actually demanded a different consultant as original one would only consider doing a c-section. She had her second baby naturally, but was monitored closely through out, and told she would not be able to continue if the labour lasted more than 10 hours.

It's up to you if you want a VBAC (vaginal birth after ceasarean section). You can even have a homebirth in some trusts.... so you would need to ask. Of course many independent MWs do VBACs at home too.
There is no reason for you to have a similar problem as pre-eclampsia is often a "disease" of first pregnancy.
Why did yo have a GA?
You are a very likley to have a good birth as you have already laboured once.

Thanks for that, I think it will be a "suck it and see" scenario. See how things go at the time i suppose. I had a GA because of foetal distress i think, dont acually know the reason.Had a transverse incision.Im reassured that pre eclampsia probably wont reoccur. Trouble is i could have easily parted with baby as he was 5lbs 4oz knowing my luck, next 1 will be 10
lbs and will deliver naturally!!!! ps 15month old for sale, comes with tantrums and car seat, local orphanage wont have him!!!hehehehehe!!!

That's ok, Donbean, I already have a housefull of younger & older versions of same.

Is that incision the one that isn't below the bikini line? The bikini line one is relatively low risk in subsequent labour... but I'm not totally clued up. Come on you C-section fans, chip in?!

You should be able to have a VBAC.
Zebra - why do you think she would have another incision, it's incredibly rare nowadays. The issue now is whether it's single layer or double layer stitching... double having less risk of uterine rupture.
The risk of uterine rupture if you are not induced is EXTREMLY low...
You could have a home birth too - it is YOUR right... check AIMS website for more info www.aims.org.uk

Donbean - I had similar first experience as you (pre-eclampsia, crash section) and was positively encouraged to go for a VBAC providing I didn't have a long second stage or need induced (something about the strength of induced contracts heightens the risk of rupture). In the end I did have a second section because dd had to come out three weeks early (and they wouldn't induce) but if you want to go for a vbac I'm sure you'll get lots of support.

I have a rather messy bikini line scar,so im told, havent seen that part of my anatomy since early stages of pregnancy. The reason i ask is because ive done a daft thing and watched discovery health and terrified myself with the vaginal birth stories. I think that although i remember the contractions and waters bieng broken and getting to 10cms i am somewhat clueless about what is involved in the birth itself. I simply have no memory thus no knowledge so im like a first time delivery i suppose.C.section apeals because im scared!

Zippy539, have never met or spoken to any one with the same experience as me,people dont seem to believe me when they ask about my experience and i tell them. Do you have the same experience. How did you feel about your birth, was your hubby/partner traumatised and helpful at filling in gaps? Did you get the opportunity to speak with any one medically after to explain or answer any questions?what happend to you? What was your experience of pre eclampsia? so glad that you got in touch.
