C section anxiety

I'm essentially just absolutely terrified of being numb and unable to move. It's one of my worst fears and I really will have a panic attack on the table just knowing I can't run off should my brain send me in to fight or flight. I'm not even scared of the actual procedure (cutting, pulling, stitching etc) it's just the immobility and not being in control of my body! Do they give you something to calm you? If so, does it really work? Obviously general anaesthetic isn't ideal as I'll want to hold my baby immediately. I've not thoroughly spoken to anyone about it all yet so I'm just panicking myself about potentially panicking!
Also, whilst I'm on the subject, interested to know how your c-section went? Good experience? Bad? Recovery? I'm full of questions Grin

I’m an anaesthetist and spent a lot of time on labour ward. Trust me - we have looked after many many patients who are just as worried about it. Tell your anaesthetist how scared you are they will reassure you. We will look after you the whole time and explain everything as the section goes on. I promise you won’t be the first or the last anxious patient - I have cared for so many women who feel the same as you. We will take amazing care of you.

Mine (emergency C-Section) was fine. Was out of hospital 36 hours after the op. Had plenty of help and re-assurance, v little pain - in fact was off painkillers 4 days after getting home.
Being on the table is a bit scary though. What helped was my partner holding my head still and stroking my forehead. The doc and nurses were great - talking to me about random stuff. Don't worry - you will be absolutely fine!

I’ve had an EMCS and an ELCS. I was terrified both times but the second time, I made sure everyone knew I was - and the staff were amazing. I also had DP with me throughout (including for the spinal).

Recovery was easier first time round than second. First time round, I’d say I felt pretty good after four weeks. Left the house for the first time on day 4. This time, it’s been more painful - left the house for the first time on day 6 and should maybe have waited a day or two. Took painkillers (paracetamol and ibuprofen) for longer. But six weeks in, I’m pretty much recovered.

My ELCS was a really positive experience - staff were brilliant, everything was very calm, we had skin to skin in theatre and our own music playing, and it just felt very relaxed. I felt really vulnerable but also very cared for, if that makes sense.
