What food/drink did you take for labour?

Obviously being on maternity leave (and bored out of my mind!) I am constantly thinking of snacks.

What did/are you planning to take to hospital for during labour? Midwife suggested lucozade but I can't stand the stuff- far too sugary. Any other ideas for that?

I am thinking of bringing oat based/cereal bars (eg Belvita soft bakes) as snacks and also my water bottle. Maybe some chocolate... As why not?! How much did people bring? Did you even want to eat anything during labour?

Jaffa cakes, Ribena cartons and those lucozade gel sachets.
In reality I didn't eat or drink anything for 14 hours. Afterwards I was so hungry but my husband had eaten and drunk everything. The lovely midwifes brought me tea and toast and it was quite possibly the best thing I have ever tasted!

virginpinkmartini · 21/02/2020 22:29

I didn't eat for 24 hours last time because there wasn't anything available/ offered to me by the time I got on the ward. Horrible really, considering I lost a litre and a half of blood.
So this time, I've packed foil lidded rice pudding, peanut and fruit bars, Del Monte fruit cups, and Lucozade. I'm trying to think of some savoury things with a long ambient shelf life to bring, nothing comes to mind (was considering Snap Pot beans but I don't really fancy them unheated)

Dampening my snack dreams! I did think I would naturally be turned off eating while on labour so I was surprised when midwife suggested to pack some.

Sounds like the snacks come into play post-birth so won't put too much thought into it. Knowing my OH he will want to Ubereats something (a novelty as our house is outside the delivery area but the hospital isn't) but will make sure to pack some light snacks for after and hunt down a flavoured water version of lucozade.

@virginpinkmartini

Snack packs of nuts
Cheese is fine at ambient temp, as are pepperamis
Beef jerky
Crisps
Veg sticks

virginpinkmartini · 21/02/2020 22:57

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 oooh I love beef jerky. That will deffo be going on my list, good shout

I took loads but didn't eat much before the birth.... afterwards was another story. I demolished a punnet of grapes per day and several Soreen mini loaves (they were a BF midnight staple too) x

Marmite27 · 22/02/2020 08:16

I didn’t take anything. Either time.

BluntAndToThePoint80 · 22/02/2020 08:19

I took Belvita bars for labour. Handy as not too big but satisfying enough.

For afterwards... all the rubbish I could find (choc, crisps etc).

Take some cordial too as hospital water is rank.

I’d take some food for the post natal ward as I found that with breastfeeding and being up in the night I needed snacks to keep me going, cereal bars and biscuits mainly

user1493413286 · 22/02/2020 08:21

Do you like lucozade sport? I don’t like normal lucozade but the sport one is more like squash and is my favourite hangover cure so I suspect would be good during or post birth too

Hopeful16 · 22/02/2020 08:22

I sent my husband for food as after FOREVER in labour with no meals provided I was starving. He brought a pasty which I could smell (and it smelt delicious) but wasn't allowed to eat it in case they sent me for a section - this was the most traumatic part of childbirth!!!

Laylor · 22/02/2020 08:44

I've made flap Jack's and bought loads of bottles of lucozade sport. I'm 3 days late and just ate the last flap Jack. 🙄🙄🙄

jackstini · 22/02/2020 08:53

My sister brought me in seafood, blue cheese and Chardonnay for my first meal after birth - everything I'd been missing!

Cordial as water got boring and nutrigrain bars were my ward staples after CS

Marahute · 22/02/2020 10:49

Cheese oatcakes and twiglets!

BabyLlamaZem · 23/02/2020 14:56

I actually took too much stuff and it got hot.

Breakfast bars, booked sweets, rice crackers. If you're in labour any longer the canteen will be open at one point. Also they give you toast.

BabyLlamaZem · 23/02/2020 14:56

The wards tend to be horribly hot so lots of water and things like lucozade.

Vanity2020 · 10/08/2020 22:59

This will be my first time so I plan to take pineapple juice, Sandwiches. Yogurts, mini savoury eggs, Bacon flavour pringles.

MrsCl19 · 11/08/2020 10:14

I packed alsorts flapjack, chocolate bars, cereal bars, dried fruit loads of bits and pieces and some lucozade.

I had a maccies breakfast when my contractions started and then I wasn't hungry from that point on I think the first few days pp I just lived if cereal bars

OhToBeASeahorse · 11/08/2020 12:56

Honestly I would try and find a lucozade you can stomach. I packed one and I'm glad I didn't because my midwife assumed I had one and told DH to alternate it and water between.each contraction. It definitely kept me going.

Other than that Cadbury Brunch Bars, Frutella and I.actually made myself eat half a sandwich.

The more hydrated and fed you can keep yourself the better.

fedupandlookingforchange · 11/08/2020 13:03

ready diluted squash and thankfully the midwives made me more squash when Id drunk what I'd taken with me. I didn't eat anything during labour but snacks are good for afterwards.

Trashtara · 11/08/2020 19:52

Fruit juice. They didn't let me eat once in active labour, and I puked up everything I ate before that. But fruit juice was a life saver.
